Don Masson 21:55 - Oct 29 with 6499 viewsCliveWilsonSaid

He was an integral part of our greatest ever team but you rarely hear his name mentioned. Not a lot of footage of him in our shirt even on YouTube and QPR Memories.

I found this brilliant footage of Watford v Notts County in 1972 which County won 4-1 with a tasty finish from Masson at the end.

Any other other rare footage, photos or words about him?

I am surprised he isn't mentioned more often, I believe or remember that he was our only player from that great team, nominated for player of the year.

Occasionally I get asked to name all the members of the 1976 team, and Masson's always the one I forget.

Not sure why. Perhaps because he was one of the later arrivals I think. The rest of the team had been pretty much set for a season or two. Or maybe because he played an important but often invisible midfield role.

A fantastic football brain. One of the best passers of a football I've seen wearing the hoops. Unbelievable to think he was 28 before playing in the top division. I've always wondered why other first division managers at the time never saw what Dave Sexton could see? Was it his lack of pace that put them off?

Stan and Gerry didn't care for him very much (according to Stan.) A bit stand-offish and full of himself, but no one questioned his ability. Perhaps in a team of big characters, he just didn't stand out very much.

His book is very good. I’m working on getting him for the Patreon in the World Cup break.

I'd love that.

He fascinates me. My Dad raves about him. Reckoned he made the whole thing tick. Plus the supposed/alleged personality differences with some of the lads. I'd really enjoy that.

I'll save the book until afterwards, I think.

Yes, spot on. He, apparently, wasn't the type to fck around, took football and life pretty seriously.

Stan wasn't exactly empty of himself, was he? He says somewhere that, when Masson came to QPR and suggested new free kick routines, he and Gerry just ignored him.

I had a chat with Don a few years back when I stayed at his guest house for the Forest game under Holloway (we lost 4-0) - he's embraced Jesus these days!

Anyone else recall being at Notts County away in the 80,s. Masson was playing again for them.

He came over to take a corner and just ended up getting so much abuse from the rangers fans. His face was contorted in shock and looked visibly upset and shaken up. Never forgot that moment and really embarrassing to be associated with some of our so called fans that day. Ignorant Fcukers.

To this day still leaves a bad taste.

Sorry Don.

Masson was so classy with his long ball passing in the middle of the park and loved pinging one in goal-bound from outside the box as shown in that fantastic newsreel in the original post.

Curious that not only did he play for one of the best QPR teams in 75/76 but before Notts County he played against the other great QPR side in a Middlesbrough team that were promoted with us from Division 3 in 66/67.

I was watching the 'Big Match revisited' yesterday, feature game QPR V Burnley 1974/75 season, i think it was Massons Home debut and he was superb despite the 1-0 home defeat.

There was an indepth section on Masson with Brian Moore and Gerry Francis, with Gerry looking like something from Ben Wheatleys 'Field in England'.

Anyway, worth looking up if you can get it on Catch up.

Back in the day I used to do a lot of work in Nottingham. Me and a mate used to stay at his B&B which from memory was a stones throw from the cricket ground and NCFC just up the road as well.

Don always made the time for a chit-chat especially as he knew we were R's.
He never had a bad word to say about the club and had some funny stories which I think most people will have heard about over the years.

Round about this time the Sunday Times and Brian Glanville was doing us proud with sympathetic reports. They did however have the tendency in a rather hoity toity fashion to describe players' first names in their entirety - hence Donald Masson,Philip Parkes,Francis Clarke etc.
It eventually ceased with "Archibald Gemmill"
