I'm not against a state honouring those who either excel or act above and beyond the call of duty, but this snippet off the Beeb sums up my ire with it: '...Elsewhere, Adam Ingram, former Labour MP for East Kilbride, Strathaven and Lesmahagow, received a knighthood for parliamentary and political service...'
Now, I don't know the bloke or whether he did an exceptional job, but seeing as he left his post in 2007, it's taken 18 years to be recognised, and hasn't he got a knighthood for simply doing his job?
While you can say, 'Ahh, but Planet, his was an important job.', I'd contend the same would apply to thousands of people whose work carries great importance at local,national, and even international level, who don't get so much as a nod!
There is a nomination system but I think the issues are in the choosing process and near expectation that some folks 'must' be chosen.
We should have our own honourary system:
I nominate Danny Paddox to receive a 'Clive' for, 'skills in posting IT generated humour', and as we always award something for coming second, Brian Mc for, 'being Brian McCarthy and twice missing out on the Liam (if you know, you know).

Don’t get me started on the House of Lords which aggravates me far more than it really should. Such a phenomenally abused institution being filled with so many undeserving, under qualified friends, family and political nonentities. It’s so utterly corrupted that people call for it to be abolished which is the complete opposite of what should happen. Who’d want the legislation of some cretinous Govt to be un scrutinised?
The place should be filled with, as far as possible, non politically aligned experts from every profession imaginable. If ever an institution needed truly radical reform it’s the HoL.
Knighthoods/Damehoods etc are the same; awards for the undeserving financial donors and two bit entertainers. These awards should be decided by a panel of randomly selected members of the public. |  | | |

Enough people have refused an honour for there to be a Wikipedia page of names. Some interesting ones, although some declined the first time, but accepted when they were offered a second time.

I find most of the gongs baffling. A friend of mine, former Royal photographer, Beatles photographer, etc has raised about £20 million for charities donating his photos for auctions, served on council committees to try and help homeless people and done so much for the community and is consistently overlooked. Similarly, my friend Ollie has done so much as a young person with Down Syndrome to raise awareness of the ability of people with disability and is again overlooked.
I've supported QPR for over 50 years, that's got to be worth some kind of medal? |  |
