I have a couple of Nepali friends, unbelievably saddened by the death of the amazing, Nirmal Purja, who was a hero in Nepal.
If you saw the Netflix doc about his incredible scaling of the world's 14 highest mountains in just six months. He smashed the previous world record, which had taken someone just over eight years to achieve! The monumental nature of the task was evident.
Nine other climbers have also lost their lives, and the only solace being: they all died doing what they so clearly loved.
Also had an amazing military career progressing from the Gurkhas to the SBS. Got to feel for his wife and child.
Interesting point about his Gurkha service and the reason I say that Is the last I heard the Gurkha's were appallingly refused a British Military Pension. Some so called famous people were fighting their cause. An appalling decision at the time and I still don't know how they got on, these wonderful little Men left their villages In Nepal to join and fight for us British and serve the bloody crown and this Is what they got. It might have been resolved now and I hope It Is but dear oh dear what a way to treat People.

Gurkha's who retired/left before 1997 only get the equivalent of the same rank in the Indian army as per the agreements made at partition.
When we handed back Hong Kong the regiments that had been based in Malaysia then came back to the UK and changes were made to the pensions from that point on.
The Celebrity endorsement came mainly from Joanna Lumley but was, from what I recall, more around settlement rights not the pensions issue.
I think that subsequently allowing the Gurkha's from pre-1997 to settle in the UK but with the lower rate of pension has become a new issue that was unforeseen at the time.

I'm re-reading 'Voices of the Royal Navy' and a British naval detachment was sent to Turkey after the first world war. They set up camp and this ex-serviceman said "we had trouble in the night with the local pillaging our stores, then we were joined by a detachment of Gurkas and all the pillaging stopped."

I Apologise, I wasn't up to speed with this, I still don't understand or agree with the pension disparity between the British Army pension and the Gurkhas.
