Great thread, some really diverse roles and careers on display here.

I've worked on Football Manager for the last 11 years, mostly as a Producer. My role is varied and has changed a lot in that time, so no two days are ever the same.

I'm directly responsible for the programming and art production teams that work on the Match Engine, which covers all the work behind the artificial intelligence, ball physics and collision systems and then from the visual side, the graphics and lighting engine, the animation engine, and the motion capture pipeline. I also help co-ordinate the entire test process for my team's areas.

I'm also heavily involved in the recruitment and development of staff across the company — and helping create an environment for the teams to thrive in and express themselves, as well as numerous other things, whatever is needed really to help make a great company and a great game.

I love my job and in the 16 years I've worked on games, I've never once woken up and not wanted to go into work. But I wanted to be a football player and then a football manager first, so this has been a pretty satisfactory second in the end. :)

On the side, I dabble a little in football coaching on a voluntary basis and photography.

There are a lot of you here who may hate your job, or think you're not capable of change, but you are, and it's never too late. You'd be surprised at how well you can pick up new things and it's all down to you and your personality and whether you have fire in the belly. I never even finished my GCSEs, let alone go to college or university.

Won't write as much as Neil, but did what he has suggested. Packed work in (got a separation) and am now working through a full time PhD in economic and business history. Absolutely love it and hope that I can continue in it through an academic career, that being what is left of my fading years (am mid-50s now). Completely different to the IT management job I had at Uni but that was driving me around the bend.

Very much into sport photography, mainly covering rugby and baseball but still work at international events in football here in Oz or nearby.

'I'm 46 and I still want to do what I always wanted to do and thats be a 747 pilot.'

Or sit next to Paul63.

So both the Boshs are 46 year old, 1967 born and wanted to be Boeing 747 pilots growing up!

Unfortunately when I was in my early teens I was diagnosed with a bowel condition that would prevent me from becoming a pilot.

I used to shit myself any time I went on a flight!

Interesting turnaround,WatfordR, from loadsamoney soul-destroying stressfull City Boy global capitalism to less renumerative but more rewarding, busy but happier local market trading - good for you.

Here's a tune applicable possibly to some LFW punters - if the cap fits, wear it - on this fascinating simply triffic, top, top thread ( 'I got one Art O Level, what did it do for me?') :

Good money yeah, but not loads mate. Was involved in admin, not Masters of the Universe stuff.

Got to the stage though where I use to sit on the train at Euston and wait for every one else to bugger off up the platform, so I could walk along in peace and quiet once it was clear. Felt that job and that life was sucking the soul out of me a little bit more every day. And I'm dreading the idea that either of my kids ever end up in employment, and the same kind of situation.

fackin 'ell, the good second mrs L now lives in semi religious cum -cult , in a gated complex on the edge of the forest of dean with little or no contact with the outside world as a result of our joyus union, only joking, but in a strange way it has all worked out for the best .for her and the kids.

there all really happy now, and i done right by them by signing the house over and just walking away. about 9 years ago now.the kids now live surrounded by beauty and clean air( the youngest has cf), better than fried chicken shops and paddy powers in romford.miss them terribly but i know there happy and loved.

i was the last person off the 8.19 chadwell heath to liverpool street every day with my head in my hands , only for about 20 years!!.

considerably poorer, but much happier and well and truly on the straight and narrow for a good couple of years now.life just seems to sort itself out in the en d

That sounds familiar - though I haven't got children so no excuse not to make a change. Every minute of my work feels like an hour and has for the past ten years. Problem is, its hard to imagine being motivated by something else when you aren't motivated by what you are doing.

I'm in IT, like many on here. Right now I have two roles, a Project Manager for transitioning services/apps from development to operations teams, setting up a support structure, funding, training, etc... I used to be app development PM, but had a chance to do different types of projects. The other role is Service Level Manager, where once the application is in operations, I make sure support teams meet the service levels agreed in the contract, plus many many many other responsibilities.

What I'd like to do is write/customize/play around with embedded systems or small computers, like to customize linux to work on some cool device. Got myself a Raspberry Pi to start with, but only installed few distros already available out there - found Arch to be the most flexible and challenging.

Great thread overall and some really interesting stories.

Quantity Surveyor/Commercial Manager in Civil Engineering. As of last Monday I'm 26 years in the business, and have been bird senseless for the last five years or so, so I'm finally going self-employed, on claims consultancy.

I also do some development and investment as a side career.

In my head I'm a writer and English Literature teacher, which is what I really should have done had circumstances been different.

Respect, Smudge, by the way.

I'm not going to suggest that walking away and then looking for something else to do (like I did) is remotely sensible. And working for yourself, particularly to start with, requires incredible amounts of commitment, time, and quite possibly money. I know lots of people through market trading who spent money - sometimes ridiculous amounts - on trying to make a living from an interest or idea, without ever doing any research to find out whether they could turn it into a viable business.

There was a good series on BBC (I think) a few months back called "The Restaurant Man", featuring a successful restaurateur who tried to help and advise people who wanted to set up restaurants, mainly with no previous catering experience. Think Kevin MCCloud on "Grand Designs", its a similar format.

Four episodes with two financial disasters, one that could go either way, and just one success. Id recommend watching the series for anyone thinking of setting up their own business. Its a good reality check.

Chartered building surveyor specialising in design and construction of commercial building envelopes - now widely known as facade engineering. It's pretty varied including new build, acquisition surveys, defects investigations and Expert Witness work. Too much of the latter recently on some large construction disputes. I've specialised for around 24 years and ran my own consultancy for 18 of those years. Work nationally and sometimes abroad. I've got a small office situated between my house and the beach so I'm fortunate and see the sea most days. Shunned enticing merger offers to avoid hours lost to the daily commute to and from the smoke!

There's a *not very well paid* job for you on here as an "action updater" (great job title) on the match threads starting in August with a 10 month contract, hours subject to change at short notice due to SKY.

*That should actually read, not paid but you're efforts and are always well appreciated.

Good Luck in your new (ad)venture...
