So something different for us LFWers. Not cheese, but spirits.

What spirit do you turn to in these times of stress and more stress?

Me, it's Irish whiskey. Developed a casual interest in this stuff a few years back. Initially Connemara, a mildly smokey whisky. Loved the initial taste, like licking a lump of coal. Then a nice mellow smoky taste. Built up a little collection of just over twenty bottles, some realtively cheap, some an investment.

A mix of single malt, single pot still and single grain. The Irishman 12 year old is my fave single malt, the sweetness of fruit you get after a a while, just lovely. Redbreast 12 year old cask strength is a fabulous single pot still, spicy but a little hint of sweetness . The Glendalough triple barrel single grain was just such an easy drinking whiskey. No hardship to sip at all.

There's been an experimental drop of Farmhouse Spirit made by Echlinville Distillery which is apparently fantastic that I'd love to try, a small experimental batch that is just an outstanding attempt at recreating what passed for whiskey in the 18th century.

So what's your favourite tipple, and why?

Mostly drink wine and V&T at home and beer in the pubs. in the absence of pubs, i've changed. Bottles of Tribute ale and Sheppey's cider will raise eyebrows on the recycling collectors tomorrow. As well as the sheer volume of empties...est. 50% up.

Like the others, more of a red vino connoisseur. However, we grabbed a few good bottles of Scottish whisky while we toured the area late last year. Also have some good Druro port and a bit of Hungarian cherry liquor. As a new Majestic Wine Merchants opened just up the road, getting a larger variety of wine than in the supermarkets has brought a change to our drinking tastes.

Been teetotal now for approximately 38 Years.
When I used to get pissed it would be pints of draught Guinness with neat rum chasers.
When I was working up North you used to get the most beautiful draught bitters, mostly local breweries, Middlesborough, Rotherham etcetera, weirdly the draught Guiness seemed to taste better when I was working in Scotland (Edinburgh, Tillicoultry, Grangemouth).
Tell you this I could kill a pint now.

My Father had a profound influence on me, he was a lunatic.

Laphroaig mostly, I love the TCP aroma, but I have a sentimental attachment to Powers when in Ireland.

Tribute is a fine drop. If I drink beer it's always ale, Marlow's Red Rebellion is my fave.

Sheppeys Cider, I have a few bottles lurking in the fridge from my son's last visit. Not ,y cuppa though.

Like a nice pinot noir.

You can certainly get some cracking Irish single malts for about £30, maybe a touch more. Tyrconnell 10 yo Port Finish might be worth a crack, you can get that from Whisky Exchange for just under £36.

Mate I have no idea about Disaronno! I used to drink Underberg as a morning after hair of the dog, but I guess that's a different story...

I was violently sick for a whole weekend when 18 yrs of age after consuming two bottles of whisk(e)y. Learned my lesson and rigorously stuck to beer, cocaine and viagara ever since.

Love a good vintage port! The difference between that and a bog standard port is the difference between a nice wine and vinegar.

Many years ago, went to a christening party for a mate's firstborn one Sunday afternoon, and we got stuck into Vintage Port. Eventually decided I'd best go home if I was going to get to work the next morning, only to find it was already 7.40am on Monday morning!!

Ah, days....

Thankfully nowadays, Guinness is generally good quality anywhere you drink it over here. Back in my youth, you'd find plenty of pubs selling watered down p1ss.

MY old man smoked from the age of 6 til he was 60, then gave it up overnight. No patches or anything. The week before he died (seven years later) after a particularly stressful week at work - he was a part time pharmacist then, and got robbed in the pharmacy at gunpoint - he said to me "Tell you what, I could kill a fag now"

My old man smoked like a chimney, and had major alcohol problems. I never smoked because of him, yet only got into drink because of him.

Never tried drugs ever, until one weekend in Amsterdam a few years back. Did nothing for me. Different story for my good lady, who "threw a whitie" and projectile vomited all over some poor cow coming out of the ladies just as she was going in.

Days....

PS - what's Viagra??

Never really got into rum, just couldn't get enthused. It's my good lady's fave though, Kraken and diet coke.

John Powers, a very odd whiskey. I love It but haven’t seen it for years. Just taken delivery of a bottle of Tullamore D.E.W. £15.00 on the Internet !!!! Went back to check and it’s now up to £18 and they’re sold out. Lucky me

Strong and stable my arse.

Bottled Fuller's ESB, many bitters don't seem to work in bottles.
I've been working my way through various Bordeaux reds that I stumble across.

..though, enjoy eating in Mexican restaurants, usually stick to the Tecate(the one with the suspiciously German Nazi Eagle looking label), but sometimes I go the complete flahoola and have the odd cocktail. Never quite sure what's in them, but the umbrellas seem to get Mrs Boston quite excited, so...

Always loved a G&T but from the days when Betty Driver used to serve it with her Lancashire hotpots, for our older readers, not just since the posh gin craze. It's a bit unnerving when they present you with twenty five options for guns and different tonics and then charge you a tenner for a single.

Can't drink whiskey at all but a really smooth brandy or port after dinner goes down well.

I have simple tastes.

Before 8pm Bombay Sapphire and Fever Tree
After 8pm Jameson straight no ice but never more than two large drops.

Tried Laphroaig once in a restaurant. Spat it back in to the glass. Can’t do Scotch has to be from Midleton.

Poll: With no leg room, knees killing me, do I just go now or stay for the 2nd half o?

The whole craft gin craze seems nuts to me. Spend £25 on a craft gin with hip labelling and packaging and then chuck a load of mixer on top of it. Like buy a fine malt or cognac and topping it up with coke.

In any case, in expert blind testing surprisingly Beefeater gin comes out as one of the very best.
