Petition to make Branson sell assets before he gets a bailout on 19:04 - Apr 22 by DevonWhite
Does he consider himself socialist or even remotely left wing? I'd be surprised. He's literally a billionaire capitalist.
From Wiki. The last sentence probably suggest left.
Politics In the 1980s, Branson was briefly given the post of "litter Tsar" by Margaret Thatcher–charged with "keeping Britain tidy".[123][124] In 2005, he declared that there were only negligible differences between the two main parties on economic matters.[125] He was suggested as a candidate for Mayor of London before the first 2000 election, with polls indicating he would be a viable candidate, but he did not express interest.[126][127][128]
In March 2015, Branson said that almost all drug use should be decriminalised in the UK, following the example of Portugal.[129]
Branson has supported continuing British membership of the European Union and was opposed to the 2016 referendum.[130] On 28 June 2016, interviewed for ITV's Good Morning Britain, he said that his company had lost a third of its value as a result of the referendum result and that a planned venture, employing over 3,000 people, which he had announced before the referendum, had been shelved. He gave his backing for a second referendum.[131] Branson endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton in the run-up for the 2016 US presidential election.[132]

He literally worked for Thatcher. Clinton and the DNC are certainly not socialist either!

“A person who espouses socialist ideals while enjoying a wealthy and luxurious lifestyle“ Probably a facade. the Nazi Party (Godwin’s Law!) started off as The National Socialist German Workers' Party.
Just like many African/Asian factions that have ‘people’ mentioned in the party name. They pretend to be one thing when actually they’re just the opposite.

I’m lost mate.
He’s never called himself a socialist to my knowledge and certainly doesn’t act like one.
By the way, and I’m not saying that’s what you were saying, but it gives actual Socialists the hump when you call the Nazis socialist, on account of how many Communist and Socialist Party members and activists as well as Trade Unionists that were sent to the concentration camps and gas chambers because of their political beliefs.

Anyone with a pension is using a tax avoidance scheme. What has he done that's so heinous that he should be disqualified from doing business with the state?
A pension is deferred salary, i.e. you took a slightly lower wage, paid N.I. at the going rate in sure knowledge that the difference was to be used to provide a living income when you reached retirement age. It is not, and never has been, a benefit or handout.
The grass is always greener.

I was thinking of a private pension, which allows you to defer income tax on money put aside for retirement savings, generally until you are in a lower tax bracket, and allowing you to make tax free capital gains. Even in the State Pension, the Employers NI contribution is not subject to income tax as it would be if it was converted to a cash payment. Many tax avoidance schemes also defer tax payments, they don’t escape them. Others are weird incentives to promote favoured industries, like film or forestry.

I can forgive a small business owner for taking out a tax avoiding private pension plan (usually unknowingly) in order to make his later years bearable and to put food on the table or send the kids to Uni.
I can’t forgive someone who denies the state the ability to pay nurses and teachers properly so they can have a few extra digits on a already un fathomable and un spendable amount of wealth.

And yet you would give him the money he wants in return for a stake in his company and thus you become another shareholder who denies the state the ability to pay nurses and teachers properly.

Whilst I agree with this in principle, i.e. he should pay his taxes and he should be selling assets there are issues that are not clear.
How much of Virgin Atlantic does Branson personally own? Virgin Group own 51% and there was recently talk of KLM/AIr France buying a 31% stake but that has been shelved/cancelled. Delta own 49%. So I think it is, just, a British Company.
The main area of concern is jobs, the vast majority of which are in the UK. If Virgin Atlantic went bust, those people would obviously be out of work.
Branson, personally, is said to be worth over £4 billion. He can well afford to make a very large contribution.
These points need addressing and a satisfactory agreement reached before any bailout should be given.

As far as I know he has asked for a loan not a bailout?
Don't agree with the man but "worth 4 billion" doesn't mean he can lay his hands on the money needed in the next few months. A lot of that is based on what his businesses are (were?) worth if he sold them.
Give him a loan, don't cut him a sweetheart deal on the rate, win win surely?

Not sure it's something to vote on really, but it's "our money" so they tell us - personally I think it's time for Branson to shut up and keep quiet or make a contribution like Captain Moore - maybe he could try swimming to Necker from MIami or something...

This has been brought up loads of times on social media. There’s a difference between a poorly run business and a business being forced to stop working.
I’m no fan of his but I don’t want Virgin Airlines to go but, as has been said, tne knock-on will affect loads of other businesses that work with VA.
I think he’s asked for a loan, not just to be bailed out.
However, he’s not done himself any favours by being a tax haven, kind of makes him look hypocritical. Was always the epitome of the champagne-socialist.
If Branson's a socialist, I'm a Chelsea fan.

It is a loan he has asked for which is why I'm struggling to see the difference between what he wants and what many other business are asking for and getting.

I am too.
I detest tax dodgers with a vengeance but it's a company looking for a loan, a company which directly or indirectly is responsible for tens of thousands of jobs. It would be folly to let them go to the wall even if the British Government had an objection to billionaire tax evasion - which it's shown no signs of - for personal reasons.
I would, however, believe that any Government should at least investigate the idea of shares for capital.

I am in agreement with Brian.
I wonder just how many other UK companies getting loans also have owners/directors that are avoiding paying there true tax bills.

Are they asking for a loan or furloughing workers ?
Addmitidly tax avoiding an art form for them and a few others but not holding their hands out so staying under the radar for now.
It's Branson's tax avoidance that looks to be the main issue for most.
I'm no fan of his or Amazon but they are doing ok out of this disaster and in no need of a loan or furloughing and won't be paying the taxes they should.

When all this crap is finally over what is the 2nd thing that people will be looking at?I would have a guess at a good holiday somewhere warm and sunny, which means that people will be back flying as much,or more than they did before. And will the airlines not work on supply and demand, therefore charging the highest prices they can get away with? If an airline is mothballed can they just not start up again when this is done with?

Do you want shares in an airline that usually loses money?

Surely our very own Captain Pugwash could make a few dubloons ferrying British taxpayers to and from Branson's island in his galleon?
