Exactly why the culture of football needs to look beyond money.

Same with Courthinho at Barca. He got his dream move but has actually not benefitted any of the parties (except the agents). Hasn’t worked out for him and would probably have been better off staying at Liverpool even if it meant they couldn’t buy Van Dijk I think they still would have won the title this season. Countless other examples I’m sure.
| Lee Johnson Sacked on 08:47 - Jul 5 with 1737 views | joe90 | I remember our last game of the 15/16 season, we played Bristol City at home (Henry scored the only goal of the game, a surprising cracker) and the City players refused to come out to wave at their traveling fans. They also said, was it this season or last(?) that they wouldn't be kicking the ball out of play if a player is injured...a harsh, unsporting club imo. | | | |
| Lee Johnson Sacked on 09:10 - Jul 5 with 1687 views | daveB | They have spent a fair bit this season and are nowhere near promotion again, I quite like Lee Johnson but feels like it's come to it's natural end with him and Bristol City. | | | |
| Lee Johnson Sacked on 12:30 - Jul 5 with 1549 views | Northernr | All the way through his time there they've been really streaky. Huge great long runs of wins when they never look like losing again, then a gigantic run of defeats where you can't see where their next point is coming from. This season they've had one defeat in 16 games at one point, five defeats in six games at another, and are currently W0 D2 L7. Last season they won nine in a row, then didn't win any of the next six. They also won four in a row and then lost four in a row at one point. Season before they won four in a row, then a draw and a loss, then five wins in a row, then six defeats in seven matches. They won 14 and lost just two of 20 games at one stage, then followed that up with W4 D8 L13.

He had an affinity with QPR, both the team and the fans, which needs to be taken into account when discussing this. He came to us with a poor goalscoring record, hiccupped his way through the first loan and, when he returned, integrated really well with Eze, Chair, Manning, BOS and Hugill which was evidenced by his goals and assists figures. Indications are that, given the choice, he wanted to let his contract run down and join QPR permanently but Burnley scuppered that. I posited at the time that his goal scoring might fall off once he left as he was leaving an attacking unit ideally suited to his particular talents. All water under the bridge now but Nahki definitely falls into the "what could have been" category for QPR and, IMO, is a relevant QPR discussion topic.

" he wanted to let his contract run down and join QPR permanently but Burnley scuppered that." If that is what he really wanted not a lot Burnley could have done about it.

Yep he wanted to do that until Brizzle offered, nearly 30 at the time Nakhi, a large sum of money and a three and a half year contract.

This. But I thought we did offer I think the transfer fee. What we could not match was the wages so, he will be on over £10K over there if all that is true. Would this mean their big forward Diédhiou might become available? Worth at least £4m methinks, which we could afford. I doubt though we could afford his wages, which is once again the problem. Would be ironic if we bought him and they then have to rely on Wells alone. Meanwhile back on planet earth ...

Pretty sure Brizzle offered about 4 times what we were offering. An insane fee. Still, their fans did tell us at the time that of course he'd go there, because they were going to get in the play-offs. they came one place above us. Money well spent.

Bristol paid £5m for him, I think we were prepared to pay £1m from memory.

You could be correct. Bottom line is we could not afford him.

We offered the correct money, they offered far too much. Impulse purchase bank rolled by a billionaire owner. They now have a player that doesn't really suit how they play on a higher salary than we could ever offer and have sacked the manager that wanted him.. Good luck to Wells to be honest, 3 year contract, signing on fee and good whack of salary. Should help see him and his agent through a tough few years as football eats itself. Shame for us, as he seemed to really click in his second term with us. Hopefully that will reduce what Brizzle can send this year on other players though and give us a little more space in our own dealings.
