I forgot he broke his ankle. It sounds like he had a lot of setbacks with it. Shame.

He’s always been a player who’s threatened to look really good without quite doing it. Maybe maturing now after a good season with Bristol R. Probably a reasonable fit for Peterborough to replace Toney and leave 3 or 4 million in change but no higher.

They're better remunerated as loan cattle, the parent club is pretty proactive about where they're sent and how they're managed, they don't get locked in to bad situations. Luxury temp agency basically. |

If we get over 20 mill for Watkins will be well happy with that although I expect the initial fee for Toney to be a lot less but with add ons.

Really? You want to spend half, or potentially over half, on an unproven forward from League One? Signs for me Brentford are over reaching themselves to make up for last season’s disappointment and come into years of good work if they invest heavily in high risk purchases and they fail... The deals not been confirmed and I doubt if the figures being quoted are including add ons that could be self financing if linked eg to promotion.Would think Ezes deal at palace will have adds s to get to the quoted 18 million. You could say Watkins has only had 1 good season in the championship in regards to goals scored but I believe he is good enough for the PL.

When you add in the fact he is out of contract next summer, it’s a bonkers fee.

Well, I’m sure Eze’s deal does have add one but they’re reported to take it to £19.5m at the very least. But that’s besides the point. I’m sure Watkins will go for around the £20m you quote, abd probably similarly structured. My point is splashing half that on one player from League One is not very “Brentford”, regardless of how it’s structured (which will never be you have no financial exposure if he fails; that won’t work for the Posh). You buying several players for a couple of million each, well scouted, and half succeeding and going for 2-4 times the price is your model. If you splash half the Watkins money on one player, who is unproven, I just think it’s a sign of departure from the previously successful model, probably in an attempt to get promotion this year. Could all backfire....

I don't really see the big departure or overreaching desperation tbh. The last five years they've spent about half total of what came in, over half of that was last year. With £40m for Watkins and Benhrama minimum to come eventually it's a natural expansion but not in terms of risk. https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/fc-brentford/alletransfers/verein/1148
Other clubs transfers - summer thread on 18:02 - Aug 27 with 1430 views | rsonist | If they'd spent it on Dwight Gayle or whoever then you could justifiably ring the alarm. Even Lyle Taylor - offered £4m at 28, not played in Champ at the time - was a much riskier punt than Toney really.
Other clubs transfers - summer thread on 18:06 - Aug 27 with 1411 views | simmo | Trying to justify 10m for Ivan Toney is a stretch, I like him and think he will do well in an chance-heavy attacking team like Brentford. But 10m?? That's a lot for even a proven Championship striker, let alone a proven League 1 guy. They're overpaying but then, they have the money due to getting more decisions about transfers right than anybody on this board...

But Toney and Goode are the first time in this Benham era that I not only haven't been jealous of the signing, but also thought they've made a bit of a mistake. Cue astonishing seasons for both...

Not at £10m.. One has done it in the Champ and one has not, and that one has 10 months left on his contract. I get what you’re saying about 50% reinvestment, but that’s a straw man you’ve put up. I’m talking about the scale of investment in this single individual. It’s a quite different point, which I think you know full well.
Other clubs transfers - summer thread on 18:20 - Aug 27 with 2502 views | daveB | I think Toney will end up looking a bargain, he is a very good player, perfect for Brentford, looking at them they should walk the division this year
