Ollie Watkins on 09:37 - Aug 6 by Northernr | He really went for them the other night. What was interesting was other footballers, Charlie Austin, Jack Collison, and others agreeing with him. I think Brentford's, shall we say, 'confident approach' to the end of this season, and the never ending stream of just how fcking wonderfully they're run as a club rubbed quite a few people up the wrong way. We all know they're superbly run but it is going a little bit OTT at times. Three times in as many games I've been told by that bloody Sky commentator about their "sleep coach". And he trotted out both in the semi and the final this line that "for once, last summer, and again in January, Brentford kept hold of their best players because they'd crunched the numbers and worked out they had a 50/50 chance of promotion if they did." I'm sorry, but, what? |
I get it and it's fun up to a point but still smacks of PFM The Next Generation though doesn't it - just as self-congratulatory as whatever Brentford do. Whatever next, a coach just for throw-ins? Didn't hear this when Fergie had an optical specialist in the 90s or when the Milan Lab was keeping players careers going into the late thirties by pulling wisdom teeth. Or Dynamo Kiev in the 80s or etc etc. Think I read recently one counterpoint to the five subs rule being retained for next season was that post-match recovery was being impacted by cryotherapy being unavailable due to regs. (Guess who agrees! https://www.theguardian.com/football/2020/jul/15/aston-villa-manager-dean-smith- ) Obviously this is all really more about the media flogging a dead horse in turning everything into a magical Willy Wonka meme - but that's not BFC's fault particularly.

Don't disagree with any of that, but... 1 - Frank and the players were a little bit full of it over the last few weeks, and bottled it three times. As soon as the final was over they've barely been seen or heard from, apart from one post match interview by Frank where he immediately went back to the "little old Brentford punching well above our weight" line. Like I say, it wore a bit thin. 2 - "They've crunched the numbers and worked out they have a 50/50 chance of promotion". I say again, what the fck does any of that mean? We've analysed every conceivable factor stat and number across a 46 game Championship season and worked out our chance of promotion is... 50/50.

How is it Brentford’s fault if the press are forever creaming over us for weeks on end the same press/media that will call us chokers and bottlers after Tuesday.Apart from the stupid comments of one of our players before the game l didn’t see any over confidence from Thomas Frank other than for the first time showing quite rightly a lot of anger over the swansea red card decision. We can’t help it if we are seen and prove to be a well run club and I quite enjoy the bile coming our way now from the likes of Leeds West Brom and other big big clubs fans who have patronised us in the past.My hope is we become more of an aggressive side next season that everyone hates and we walk away with the league. Do you honestly think the words of old sniffer who was crying his eyes out on the pitch only a week ago is going to do anything than make us laugh. I see we are 2/1 favourites to go up next season just waiting for the how arrogant comments.By the way thought your comments the other night after the game were pretty crass thought you were better than that but it was late so ..

Don’t get the rubbishing of good players even Clive was slagging off our front 3 last night Yes hate or take the pee out of the club on their failure but choose creditable targets. |
Eze was one of the most consistent and high scoring players according to whoscored.com so... not many poor games at all.

I do rate Ollie Watkins, I think he's a good player but I wouldn't simply put the final down to 'they were poor last night'..' how many times has Eze been poor this season' etc. I always think the top players turn it on in the big games - they can take the pressure. Other's can put away a hatrick midweek, no problem when the pressure's off but do they have what it takes to stand up when there's so much at stake? Definitely too early to tell with Watkins but it is something to be concious of - is he a flat track bully that will turn it on when the pressure's off but crumble when the heat's turned up or was this just a one-off failure? I'll be interested to see his development over the next 18 months but I wouldn't, at this stage, just put down the failure to a one-off-blip. I need to see a bit more evidence that he's a big game player first. PS - scoring and battering QPR is no evidence of being a top player. I think I could have a productive 15/20 minute cameo against our defence.

Frank said prior to the Swansea semi-final he was "100% sure we will win". And he was right, but it's still pretty brash thing to say and is going to provoke a lot of schadenfreude if his team eventually slips up. https://www.walesonline.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/swansea-cardiff-brent He was also asked if 'BMW' would still be there next season and he said "yes, because we're going to be in the Premier League". https://www.shropshirestar.com/sport/uk-sports/2020/07/28/thomas-frank-backs-bmw He'd also earlier in lockdown been talking up Brentford's results and saying it was up to West Brom and Leeds to "come up with an answer". https://www.yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk/sport/football/leeds-united/thomas-frank- Again, fine, you want to portray confidence in your team. Again, fine, don't read too much into stuff managers say in interviews. But the fact is it does come across a bit arrogant, and people are going to enjoy it if it blows up on you after saying stuff like that. Likewise Emiliano's comments about Fulham being scared of you - Brian Tinnion once did that about us when we were fighting with Bristol City and ended up looking a tit as well. There are other bits and pieces as well. Billy Beesotted, God love him I'll have a drink with Billy any time and he's always absolutely superb when we go to him for any Bees input, but his divisional team of the year for Sky had five Brentford players in it, with a Brentford player as his overall player of the year, and a Brentford player as his surprise package. For the whole division! It all just comes across as a bit full of it, without even mentioning the wnky Sky coms, which you can't really control as you say (although the commentators will be getting that information from the club as part of their preparation, so all that 50/50 bolox is coming from Brentford), and people are going to have a bit of a giggle if you have games against Stoke, Barnsley and Fulham to get into the Prem and lose all of them. I'd be interested to know which of my comments you saw as crass. I didn't say too much, because we're miles behind Brentford and you could well win it next season, but I did retweet some stuff I found funny, and I did ask when the Justice League trophy was being presented - again, that's something Brentford have bigged up themselves, mostly under Smith, so you can't really be too surprised when people have a laugh about it when you fck up. I thgink I said this apparently world beating front three didn't show up - they didn't! Obviously all good players, going far in the game, would love them here, but they were completely anonymous in the three games you needed them most.

Ollie Watkins on 22:12 - Aug 5 by CliveWilsonSaid | So you'd pay £40m for Eze? |
1/ A bit unfair to say a transfer deal from 25 years ago is indicative of how QPR do business. You don't say, "I didn't like M&S underwear 25 years ago, so it's awful now." 2/ We only got £4m for Austin because he *refused to go* when we had the chance to sell him earlier in his contract. 3/ And finally, as ever, we get the fees *other clubs offer*. That's the way the market works. We didn't get £10m for Freeman because no one offered £10m. You can refuse to sell, of course, but QPR are not in a position to do that.

Yes - it's not as if Brentford don't have a PR team who are going to be pushing or controlling the messages which Sky then pick up on. They were either pushing these messages [which now looks silly] or not controlling them [which means they weren't doing a very good job]. I think what Brentford has done is incredible, and they deserve credit for the way they recruit, they way they sell, and the way they play football. We have a huge amount to learn from them. That said, look at the way Parker approached the game. He had the humility to adapt the way his team played to nullify Brentford, and he had also very clearly used some of the things Brentford players had said ahead of the game to motivate his players. Did you notice that one of the first things Joe Bryan said in his post-match interview was about how Brentford thought they were scared of them? I don't think that was coincidence, and I'd bet my bottom dollar that the comments from Emiliano were printed in large on the dressing room wall as motivation. The way a manager takes pressure off his squad is really important in delivering results. Jose used to (and still does) do it by making it all about him. Holloway used humour. SAF would go to war with the media. I think Frank got this really badly wrong and it has really hindered Brentford over the last three games. Parker clearly did this by staying quiet, making clear to his squad that Brentford were overly confident, and getting them to forget about the pressure on them, and to want to prove Frank wrong. switchingcode, what exactly are you expecting to see when you come onto a QPR message board? Fair enough, there are a few posters on here who openly wanted Brentford to win on Tuesday night, but the vast majority on here wanted you to lose because of the arrogance shown in the last couple of years. The pitch side announcer at your place is an absolute embarrassment by not even mentioning our clubs name. Add to that that they won’t spell our name on the front cover of your match day programme, and you wonder why your club is unpopular. If the boot was on the other foot, and QPR lost to Fulham in the play off final, and I went on a Brentford message board, I would expect quite a lot of vitriol. Believe me mate, you’ve got off lightly on here. Saying that, I like you as a poster, and I hope you keep posting on here. [Post edited 6 Aug 2020 13:20]
