Is there really nothing you don't fulminate against? You make Lblock sound like Pollyanna on E. It's just a fun way of making a bit of cash when clubs have had their earnings decimated. If all of these were sold it would make a decent difference to our club at a time when we need all the income we can get. You don't have to do it and nor does anyone else.

I'm not fulminating - I'm grieving!

If it all just comes down to money in the end, I'd rather just bung my club twenty five quid as a donation if they're suffering any more than the rest of us are financially and occupationally right now, rather than contributing to the fake noise/fake fans/fake football 'new normal'.

Anyway, sorry for not lightening up enough!

At one in the same time I agree with you and see that Stainrod's Elbow is absolutely right. This is utterly bonkers and a pretty terrifying testimony to the times we live in. More importantly, Jean Baudrillard mentioned on LFW, a first in football fandom, surely?
The thing is though, Stainrod's, if you've been taking it all seriously up to now and haven't realised that football has long since been sliced up, packaged and turned into a plastic spectacle, and it's only cardboard cut outs of fans that's tipped you over the edge, then that in itself is a bit weird.

O football's long gone, Mr Kropotkin, I realised that years ago, don't worry about that - it's as much a matter of melancholy nostalgia now as any present pleasure for those of us who have been married to QPR as long as I have and don't just do and think as we're told. I really do pity those fans who think cutout versions of themselves are 'just a bit of fun' (as well as loathing that slippery sliver of me that could capitulate to the pressure just to laugh along). For me, I guess, it's just one of the straws breaking this camel's back.

The Guardian piece I recently posted about the 'new footballing normal' is hands down the best piece of journalism on the topic I've read - it really ought to be grist to Clive's mill (who has been eloquently 'fulminating' far more than me on the topic for months). Read it and feel very afraid! Just as our academic institutions are clearly using Covid to trial long-term online learning to 'dematerialise' HE, while Whitney Houston laser shows are now sold as the 'dead real' thing, I've no doubt that the current crisis will only further the interests of those who want to see football moved into a fully digitised, derealised, fan-purged 'global entertainment' (as inaugurated in the UK by Hillsborough + the Thatcher government, who quite possibly helped stage that tragedy with the help of the police for that very purpose).

The more they tell us we matter, the more you should suspect we don't - end of!

I agree with Stainrod, it's a poor reflection on the state of football that we even have to contemplate this, although I can see the appeal as a bit of a laugh (although I might actually cry if I saw cardboard cutout watching a game I couldn't)

As for the club actually making any money, you're having a laugh. A colour printout that size which then has to have someone draw round and is then cut out, weatherproofed (otherwise no point offering them back) and mounted on a seat all for £25 - I wouldn't be surprised if the club were making a loss on this, but let's suppose they make a £10 on each one and sell 5,000 that'll be £50K or I months salary for £12.5k player or 0.25% of the fee we got for Eze. Not going to go far in the world of football is it?

My dad has recently been diagnosed with something....well, very serious. He probably won't get to go back. So this is great, he'll love seeing a cut out of himself at the ground

Anything that brings in new revenue currently is a good idea

Prefer the cut outs to the 30 fans on zoom watching on a giant iPad (thinking Man City)

I’ll get some for my kids who will think it is a brilliant idea and it might encourage them to watch the stream which has gone from family viewing in the living room on the TV to me watching it alone on my phone.

Bit like myself, still bought my season ticket, but doubt I will ever be able to get back to Loftus Road.
So many memories from when I was a little boy going along with my Dad and Uncle, who have long passed away.
Been thinking of digging out pictures of them for a seat in the ground, sentimental but I'm getting into "what the hell" territory.

I'm feeling chastened myself. Football is sentimental, after all - it's pure emotion in the end. If my more embittered remarks about the Baudrillardian dematerialisation of football upset you in any way, please message me offline and I'd be glad to pay for your dad's cutout as a gesture of solidarity. He could be any one of us.

Naff doesn't even cover it...

I can't believe that there are actual adults out there who want to know there is a cardboard cutout of them in an empty football stadium which they may or may not see...

Seriously, get a life people or buy a prostitute.

Well firstly, they DO see it, it gets sent to you at the end of the season.

Secondly, is it any more 'naff' than buying ANY merchandise, screaming abuse at complete strangers, cheering on men earning more in a week than you do in a year and who wouldn't even look at you in the street?

Football, in fact all sport, doesn't make 'sense' its not supposed to.

I've sent in my 85 year old Mum, she's thrilled as she doesn't have the confidence to go in person , even if we were allowed to, what's the alternative you propose for her?

Afraid it's as real as it gets, and having Covid interfering in what time I do have left pisses me off no end.
