Top Trumps - 1978 World Cup 17:13 - Feb 20 with 4254 viewsCliveWilsonSaid

Sitting in the pub and a couple of friends are playing Top Trumps 1978 World Cup cards.

Can anyone name the ex-QPR players who feature? I think there are 4 in total.

Edit - Another one just showed up! So at least 5.

Edit - There are at least 6. Arguably 8.

1. Don Masson
2. Ossie Ardiles
3. Stan Bowles
4. Gerry Francis
5. Joe Jordan
6. Bruce Rioch
7. Don Givens
8. Ray Wilkins

Yes! I didn't have Ossie so make that 6. They didn't necessarily play at the finals but feature in the card set.

Did they publish the set before England failed to qualify? 🤔

If you include ex-managers Bruce Rioch was in the Scotland squad. Not sure if he made the Top Trump pack. The other more obvious one is Sandro.

1978, What a world cup.

I Can't think of any QPR players outside of the oneS mentioned already but as an 11 year old, I Always, always remember those two wonderful Footballers from italy...

Romeo Bennetti , a player with the tackle of a Johnathon E rollerball glove uppercut and the éclat of Francis bacon propping up the bar at the The Colony Room Club. He had it all. He looked like he stepped straight out of a Mario Bava Film.

Roberto Bettega, in the same strata with emilio butragueño as the most complete Striker i have ever seen.... Man.. that beautiful Italian winning Goal v Argentina in the Junta Cauldren of their own backyard in Buenos Aires.

That one-two with Paulo Rossi.. Unforgettable. All with Cyborg Daniel Passarella and his nexus crew of head stompers tring to kick the living shit out of Bettega and Rossi. Football can be so fuking Beautiful sometimes.

Bettaga's diving header in Rome in the qualifier against England was pretty special; Benetti to Causio who backheels it back to Benetti who'd continued his run and then an inch perfect cross on Bettega's head.

No. Both remaining players (on my list) are proper greats for us.

Alas not. One didn't play for us until much later.

Brian McCarthy might be a good clue for the other.

Based on this logic I'll go for Don Givens.
