Couple of general observations from today 20:59 - Apr 15 with 8462 viewsVancouverHoop

Second half showed the return of Ilias Chair. Not only that but, I think provided he stays, he could – maybe should – be team captain next season. He now has enough experience at this level, and today showed real leadership. More importantly we simply have to get younger and faster. He's could be touchstone for that.

Which is the second point. Our subs today simply killed our momentum when they came on. They were just plain off the pace. Their experience was important, vital even, last season but now their time is clearly past. I realise contracts are an issue but that can't be helped. If this season has proved anything it's that they're an anchor on overall on team performance.

I was watching on television oz & directly the ball went for a corner I stated that Dunne could have got that. I don't think that it crossed his mind that it could be anything other than a corner.

Interesting to read about the runs Dykes was making. They didn't show up, but the Thomas runs definitely did. The space he was creating for others & dragging defenders to where they didn't want to go was a major contribution to our performance.

I do not really want to start another thread, but the big man/small man front line is something that we could work on for next season. As much as there is a want for Dykes to go, I think that unless he scores in the WC, if Scotland go there, he will be with us next season, and hopefully hungrier.

However, who is to be the small guy here. Thomas is putting himself in front of the coaches at present. This is his chance to shine and, if he can be given a run of a few games and not dropped every second game after yet another decent performance, perhaps he will shine. However, Kelman is now doing well at Gillingham in a big man/small man situation with the 30yo Vadaine Oliver and if Thomas does not get going, Charlie may just be that option.

I would definitely persevere with Thomas. There is potentially a very good player in there.

His positioning, anticipation and composure in the box is all not good enough yet. That is why he’s not scoring.

However, he’s technically very tidy, he makes very good runs, he has a bit of pace so can offer short or in behind, and he’s versatile in terms of where he can play.

Given he’s ours, he knows the club and his colleague, he’s not on a big salary, and another punt on a player in his position will cost us more than he does, I think we’d mad not to persevere.

With some confidence and a bit of luck, I don’t think it’s far fetched to say he could be a very good player at this level.

Likewise don't want to start another thread but it showed yesterday what 11 fit players can achieve, as we outplayed and outworked a team 3rd in the table despite being low on confidence.

I get say Gray will chip in with the odd goal but certainly in early part of the season was'nt fit enough and was being carried.

Amos carried a greater goal threat yesterday as is fit and can run the full 90, this was the big difference yesterday as we were playing with 11 and not 10 as we have been at times this season.

Yesterday showed we own 11 players under 27 who can maybe challenge for a top 6 finish next season, real progress, in Warbs we trust.

Just a quick word for Chair. He is a great little player with a fantastic engine and quick feet. I think some people on here under-estimate the knock-on effects that the AFCON tournament had on him. It takes time to get back up to playing 90 minutes of Championship football every three - four days and to instinctively knowing what to do on the ball. He has done really well.

Yeah, he's had a long season, involving injuries, covid, military coups, the weight of expectancy and a real kick in the teeth in terms of his treatment at afcon.
Love the bloke, and so happy to see him enjoy his football again. He's a delight to watch.

I think yesterday saw a return to old Warbs principles - younger players, with legs, in other words. Two young defenders, 5 midfielders all under 25, and a mid-20s striker. We looked a lot more mobile throughout the pitch.
Hope we see a very similar side on Monday and for once sports science goes out the window. They're young men, they can do it.

Bare bones.

Continuing with the George Thomas discussion it should also be noted that he can take a dead ball with great whip and accuracy. His body shape when taking corners is that of Ward-Prowse. And with his energy and pace as long as he can stay injury free I think we have a very decent player there that can rotate with Willock and Chair. He does have a very good football brain and I feel that once he gets his first goal then he will move onto another level.

Poll: Where will Clive put QPR in his new season preview

Genuinely pleased to read those positive views on Dykes and Thomas after my grumpy post!

He's a sign if the times. Not a natural goalscorer but does a lot of running. Ticking the all stats boxes but not scoring loads of goals.
Not trying to have a pop at him as he's been good and worked his socks off for the team but it's something I heard Jermain Defoe mention this morning on YT. Lots of young players trying to concentrate on assists rather than goals. Goes without saying but Defoe is baffled by his own observation.

Had a nice big slice of humble pie for breakfast this morning as i slagged off Dozzell in the match thread after a couple of sloppy passes. He really came into his own and produced a great no nonsense performance. One of his best for the club.

Me too. Unlike Dykes, he at least tries hard to improve. And he is ours.

Not sure if it was just me but It seemed Westwood wanted to punt the ball higher up the pitch rather then just passing to our full backs. We seemed to be playing higher up the pitch than previous games anyway.
The passing out from the back frustrates me as we just sit so deep. I get the philosophy that it means we retain the ball for longer but if we can't move the ball quickly (which we haven't in previous games) we just sit in our half inviting pressure.
We looked like we had more intention to move quicker up the pitch is my casual observation. A solid performance.

It was an encouraging performance. I thought the full backs. midfield and Thomas did well.

Less impressed by Dykes and Barbet.
Dykes may have been more mobile than it appeared to be on television (on tv he looked to be just standing there).
It was a poor own goal by Barbet.

Great to see some resilience, energy, pace and better passing. We were unlucky not to win.

It was like chalk and cheese from the majority of our previous 14 performances.

Warburton should stick with playing the younger players - it made a difference and the team looked to be playing for each other.

We certainly had more pace with the younger players. Something we really need to concentrate on next season in all positions. Pace is key in this division and we don't have that much of it.

Never knowingly right.

What we learned here is that Amos needs to start now, as he can get goals and for a team that struggles to get goals that's a massive need.

This makes the team selection interesting even taking into account current injuries and players loaned out. I suspect if we have no more injuries the team against Derby may be:

Westwood

Odubajo
Dunne
Barbet
McCallum

Field
Johansen
Chair
Amos

Gray
Dykes

Subs:
Mahoney
Sanderson
Dozzell
Ball
Adomah
Thomas
Austin

I suspect he will play Gray due to that goal against them and how they will be focused on him, which may release Dykes a lot more. And Amos will now start as he can score goals along with Chair. This brings the much-needed goals to our team. We shall need fast fullbacks as Derby have the same and Field to contain Lawerence.

Also, I am hoping the belief will be there now after Hudders, which is a game we gifted them and should have walked away with all 3 pts. If Willock had been fit and in place of Thomas (not that he played badly) we would have got them all for sure. But that's all fantasy anyway.

zzzzzzzzzz

Very true. Only problem is, I don't think he is very good. If we had (an interested) Gray on earlier, I think we could have won the game. This contradicts a post I put up earlier in the week, when I praised the value of a committed player over one who is better but lazier. I know nothing

I don't think that is fair at all. Considering the paucity of minutes he has had, he has been one of the few positives of the past two months
