Sorry Clive for starting another 20 page thread, but what a load of old bollox.Where will it all end?

Well what would help is a TV show not sensationalising (and at the same time in effect trivialising) one small part of what is actually a very well researched and thought-provoking article. I don't for a second believe whatever show it was has a hidden agenda....more that most media platforms these days survive / thrive on stirring like this under the guise of 'stimulating debate' - something the article attempted to do before it was hijacked.

It's the (predictable) howls of protest against it in the media that seem a bit over the top to me. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Goes to show nothing about me, or indeed about anyone being needlessly dismissive, just proves that people like different sorts of comedy. My half brother is a fairly famous comedian - different surname in case anyone knows mine - and I don't find him funny at all. Annoying, smart-arsery isn't my thing.

The Guardian, I feel obliged to tell you, isn't left wing. There's a lot of things I know very little about, but this I know about. The people telling you that The Guardian is left wing are lying to you. Now as to the reasons why we are encouraged to regard this paper as left wing, there by hangs an interesting tale. It is a rag.... left wing? Nope.

only in the sense all papers are rags and all journos are hacks. The investigative journalism done by that paper is often excellent - and should be recognised as such. Opinion pieces... some good, some bad, some horrible, like everywhere.

The investigative journalism done by the Guardian used to be excellent, Antii. The last time that happened (IMO) was the massive can of worms that Ed Snowden opened on the illegal activities of US Homeland security and their ilk, which included downloading pretty much everyones' emails and listening to and recording millions of peoples' phone conversations, including prominent European politicians. MI5 were extremely displeased that the then editor, Alan Rusbridger, had the temerity to run this massive expose against their... errrm... wishes. Ever since then, and especially under the stewardship of Catherine Viner, the Guardian has been co-opted as a propaganda purveyor for various state interests, when it suits them. In fact I'd go so far as to say the Guardian is now effectively more of a suppressor/denier of revelations about the shenanigans of state/govt. agencies than a revealer of their nefarious actions. Media Lens did an amazing piece of investigative journalism on this themselves, which if I can find, I will link to, because it's pretty mindblowing vis the relationship of the so-called free press and state agencies.

Sorry, but as a former employee and still a contributor to the Guardian, that's rubbish. There have been tons of big investigations since Snowden — the Windrush story, the Panama Papers, the big number into US killings by police. If you really think the Guardian has been co-opted by state power, you're not looking at the paper. But you know, you read something in Medialens, the home of the cranks, so I'm sure you're right.

Changing the subject slightly. I finished 'Denim and Leather' the other week and loved it. I laughed out loud many times and the Venom in America stories actually made me cry laughing as I was picturing the chaos. I couldn't find the thread for it I hope it was your one!

It's rubbish, is it? I'd say as a former employee and current contributor perhaps you're unlikely to hold an unbiased, objective view. Your immediate dismissal of Media Lens as 'the home of cranks' is telling in itself. However, I have unearthed the article I was referring to. It's not actually from Media Lens (I misremembered that). It's written by investigative journalists Matt Kennard and Mark Curtis. Before you dismiss it out of hand, in the same way you've dismissed Media Lens, I invite you to read the article - without prejudice - and refute it. You may even find it edifying. https://www.dailymaverick.co.z

There are lots of facts in that piece, and then a whole load of supposition to thread them together. A lot of mistaking correlation for causation. And there are strange and stupid errors, too — the kind so basic that if you are making them, it calls into question a lot of the rest of the reporting: "In the period since Snowden, The Guardian has lost many of its top investigative reporters who had covered national security issues, notably Shiv Malik, Nick Davies, David Leigh, Richard Norton-Taylor, Ewen MacAskill and Ian Cobain." Yes, Shiv Malik left. Nick Davies was Rusbridger's best mate. No one was surprised when he stopped writing for the Guardian — aged 64 (he's now 70). David Leigh retired in 2013, when Rusbridger was still editor. RNT is now 78 — he's retired. Ewen retired in 2018, aged 67. Ian has presumably gone to work for Middle East Eye because it reflects his politics. This isn't Kath Viner deliberately destroying things. The whole thing about Kath not being involved in the Snowden story. Well, no, because as the piece even notes — she was the editor of the Australian edition, and that was a US-UK co-production. Of course she had nothing to do with it. I am sure the Guardian took less risks after Snowden. Having your laptops destroyed under MI5 supervision because you've broken the law to print a story tends to leave an institutional mark. That does not make your assertion it is a tool of power any less ridiculous. I gave you other big investigations that had been done since the time you said the paper stopped doing investigations: you just ignore that.
