I've been rather hypnotised by Julian Lage for many months now. He's a jazz guitarist who plays solo, in his own band and with other musicians. Saw him play with saxophonist Joe Lovano last year.
I love watching him play as well as listening to his stuff. He's not only a superb technician, but also plays with real feeling and often with humour which you can see in his facial expressions.
This example is a lovely lazy blues piece:
Who's yours?

Not a huge fan of Fleetwood Mac but Lynsdsey Buckingham deserves a mention. Never going back again from Rumours is a master class in acoustic guitar. Also Charlie Burchill of Simple Minds. His early work deserves a mention.
Have you ever tried to learn this song? Sounds simple, but it's actually impossible

I hadn't actually listened to that before - some lovely flourishes on acoustic.

Lyndsey is an absolute badass. This is the most unf*ckwittable thing played on an acoustic and his singing is superb too. That's just a talented motherf**ker. Arrogant as f**k, but it's earned.
Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. Stefan Moore, Stefan Moore running down the wing. He runs like a cheetah, his crosses couldn't be sweeter. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore. Stefan Moore.

My favourite guitarists were always Geordie Walker (Killing Joke) and Robert Smith (The Cure). I learned to play by listening to and learning from a lot of fast, shreddy metal players but when it comes to just getting feelings out of the guitar, Rob's the man.
His 'solo' on this is a perfect example. I'll take that over sweep-picking, tapping and Super Phyrgian scales all day. And he's out of tune during it. Just makes it work. F*cking superb.

Wow! Sounds like he's playing a piece for two guitars, but just him on one guitar. Amazing.
I find it difficult to look to look beyond Pixies when it comes to guitar. Neither of Joey Santiago or in particular Black Francis are technicians but I love what they do.
Mac DeMarco tends to only surround himself with incredible musicians. Most recently on guitar and various other instruments he’s had Pedro Martins in his line-up. Here is Pedro playing with Tylor The Creator.
