Still going strong at 35, 18 years after his debut for us. Just got his fourth goal of the season for Hornchurch in National League South.

I wish we had more ex-players we could look up at/to, rather than all these Balantas and Slades etc, who end up dropping so many rungs (if not actual ladders!) from where they were with us. How many players actually go onto better things after leaving us?

Poll: What d'ya expect from our last 3 holiday games (WBA(A), Norwich(H), Sheff W(H))?

In the last decade all of the following have played in the Premier League after leaving us:

- Charlie Austin
- Eberechi Eze
- Luke Freeman
- Joe Lumley
- Ryan Manning

Asmir Begovic and Alex Smithies were with Premier League clubs after us but didn't play in the PL.

And then there's Harvey Elliott and Raheem Sterling (bit more than a decade ago in Raheem's case) who were with us as youth players but got pinched before they could turn out for us.

Is that enough to be going on with!?

Alex McCarthy.

Alex McCarthy left us in 2015, so just over a decade ago:

That's my excuse and I'm sticking to it!

It is a good point though - they are hardly any ex QPR players doing well or holding down a decent career

Eze doing well. That’s about it

A few exes knocking around the same level (Manning, BOS, Dykes, Armstrong, Robinson, Lowe)

It’s a metric that needs work

You missed out Rob Dickie from that list at the same level.

And is captain at Bristol City who are consistently in the top ten.

Him and Dunne together were treated poorly by the fans back then and I could understand why he was keen to leave. But you could realistically look at the fact, they played together under Ainsworth.

In hindsight, it would have been better for us to keep him. He was aware he was leaving when he put in an absolutely immense display in a Burnley away win, who were in the top two, which was the difference between us being relegated or not.

At one stage with a couple of 25 yard hits to boot, we all thought he could be a premier league player. His lack of pace has probably been the reason why he never got that chance.

some of that has to do with the ages of players we've mostly picked up until the last few years

like Geoff Cameron was never going to go and do anything better at his age. unless a tilt for a republican senator's seat comes up in the future.

apart from the players already mentioned above...

the much maligned Jake Bidwell played over 200 championship games since he left us

our mini German contingent in Leistner and Polter are still plugging away in 2. Bundesliga

Pawel may be in the awful Polish league but he's playing for his country, and has a chance of reaching the WC. so good for him

going back a bit further Tjaron Chery made a good career for himself.

Bright played a lot in Turkey and is back here, must have hit his head and had someone tell him he was a wing back though.

lots of other players went and played lots in League 1, like Josh Scowen, which says to me we got probably even got the best out of them.

I forgot about Polter.

He didn't play in the PL but he has had Bundesliga spells with Union Berlin, Bochum, Schalke, and Darmstad.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/

He also had a season in the Eredivisie with Fortuna Sittard.

Not a bad career all-in-all.

You say I'm a 'blight', the next poster acknowledges (thank you) my fair point. Football boards, eh? You couldn't make it up!

Have you ever considered just shutting the f*ck up yourself if all of you want to do is spread bile? Take a look in the mirror, mate, if you short of NY resolutions.

We made him into the great player he has become. Perhaps....

We got Angelo Balanta from a local grass roots level. I think he has done alright for himself, making a career out of the game and continuing until his mid-thirties. This was no Prmier team prodigy who fell off a ladder. He was a local by who stepped up from the base of the footballing pyramid.
