Some are against Varane for me he is very up and down but on his best days he is excellent. i think thats the frustration with him. If we get decent money for him, which is possible, i think we could all be happy with and move on.
Myself though however, my main reservations the most currently are with Mbengue.
Yes his pace is incredible and sometimes he makes incredible defence saving tackles. However, his rash moments, diving in dangerously, crossing which can be absolutely woeful and very often he sells himself way too early and is easily passed and beaten by opposition wide men.
Yes he is a complete character, sometimes he can be way out of position too, leaving us wide open at the back and yes, great as a rabble rouser after a decent win, but beyond being very erratic and a walking yellow card is he actually any good ?? If he is still with us next season i would hope its just as a squad member. Certainly wouldn't wish him as number one right back.
For me, we need to be looking at a first choice specialist right back and also not keep playing centre backs in this position always. Yes we also need more cover at left full back but personally i would myself much rather have RND in the squad than Mbengue.
Appreciate with some, he is a fans favourite, as much to do with his character, but is he actually any good and is he likely to improve.

Totally disagree with this.
You think we need to sign TWO right backs? How about we continue to coach and improve the young players we already have instead of just buy loads more? |
This is the thing isn't it, we can't be a development club if you just give up on people like this after a season.
He's got things in his favour - age, pace, athleticism, physicality, attitude, dressing room presence.
He's got a lot of problems - brain, violence, final ball, decision making, discipline.
We're not in a position really where we can buy somebody like that for £350k, give him nine months, and bomb him out. You've got to work on reducing the second list and building the first one. Isn't that what this litany of staff are here to do? Isn't that literally Kevin Betsy's job description, for instance? |  | | |

I did say this fella would cost us dear this season and sadly that proved the case v Wrexham (as well as numerous other times).

Possibly, but the fact that Stephan played Ronnie there when he had a choice makes its own statement.
FWIW whilst JCS is actually fit, him and Ronnie at CB with Jimmy at RB would be my choice although a new RB would not go amiss... |
I’m afraid Clarke-Salter is now 3rd choice when fit. Dunne is undroppable, Edwards brings the class that JCS used to have the monopoly on. Mbengue brings the pace and aggression on the right.
Great to see Clarke Salter back and hope his hamstring stays fit for more than a dozen dead rubber games so he can fight for his place back. [Post edited 21 Apr 6:50]

Spot on Norf........we miss him when he doesnt play although I thought he was poor on Saturday and could be benched tonight.
As far as replacing him......a lot of others, a lot of other positions need to be replaced/filled before RB. We have a youngster as backup, apparently!!!!
Full backs are very important positions these days and the way the game is played & whilst Mbengue has limitations he will be OK for now. |  | | |

So, this season, at right back, we have had
Jimmy Dunne
Amadou Mbengue
Kealey Adamson
Kieran Morgan
Daniel Bennie
Ronnie Edwards
So thats six players, not sure if any others played there, but weirdly only one (Adamson) has right back down as his specialist position.
I believe Adamson is 23 now, so not exactly young anymore, in terms of a professional footballer, so cant see why we keep him on our books going forwards, given that he has had a handful of games at the professional level, and 23 is not an age when you continue as a very infrequent squad member.
But what is this strangeness with using all and sundry to cover right full back.
I do hope somehow, we can spend a few pennies on a decent first choice right back. In hindsight, we should have splurged the Saito money on this, and i have got a feeling we have a deal in place for Saito to move back to the far east and feel we could recoup, a lot of the money we spent.
I agree with developing Mbengue, but do sincerely hope we have one player in our squad whose actual position is as a right back specialist.
Am happy too, we keep Mbengue and if he improves also, all well and good.
Not sure what this clubs aversion to actually signing bog standard everyday dependable fullbacks that do what it says on the tin.....
