Reading the saints web forum it seems quite a high percentage of Saints fans on their feel the punishment was deserved?
It seems like it’s what the cool kids think and shows how big they are about everything.
I’ve spoken to loads of fans of other clubs since we were thrown out and not one of them thinks the punishment was fair.

How many on here think the punishment was fair?

Personally I think the punishment was fooking ridiculous.

No it wasn’t fair, life isn’t fair, but you make the most of it and carry on being the best you can be.
It’s an old sailors superstition that it’s bad luck to spend time looking at the wake.

I don’t think the punishment was fair, but if you read the EFL statement they put out a week ago basically saying you can buy tickets and travel for Wembley but it could change , this for me was the 1st indication that they offered expulsion to the panel .

What didn’t help was the clubs attitude to it, it seemed they would just get a small fine and be done with it. Completely underestimated the whole thing.

For me I’m still angry that the club are now “ one of the clubs “ that broke the rules paid the price. This is my club, the one I’ve supported since 1978 .

The silence from the club is baffling to me, just 3 statements that were half arsed put together.

We should now be celebrating a return to the premier league instead we are going to play the likes of Wes Ham, Lincoln and Bolton in the 2nd division .

Poll: Should Tonda be sacked if he new we were spying .

I wouldn't say the punishment was ridiculous, I understand why it was given, but I think it was over the top. It was a really severe punishment and those should be reserved for really severe crimes, which I don't think this was.

OTOH I don't think we can really complain. It's likely that we did it in lots of games and we're not going to change it now, so I think it's best if we just face up to it and get on with things.

Honestly, the punishment was the most ridiculous thing to happen in football for many a year. Completely OTT - and you know what, part of the reason I like Eckert so much is his unquenchable desire to win.

He overstepped and made a mistake (but lets not kid ourselves that other teams don't do exactly the same thing) but the hysterical reaction (including from Adam bloody Blackmore and Alfie House) has been nothing short of comical. You'd have thought we had bribed referees and opposition and broken the legs of key opposition players.

In some respects I had mixed feelings about Saints going back to the Premier League. I really hate that League and the Chamiponship is far more fun.

Whether I think that after Saints bow to the ugly mob and force Eckert out and we end up with a no mark manager and spiral down again is a different matter!

No, it was over the top and disproportionate. Had we finished 10th, they probably would have given us a big fine and points deduction, that would have been that. But from their side of things, had they not thrown us out and we got promoted, we might have escaped any punishment, as points deductions and fines are difficult to be transferred over to the PL, so they probably feared we would get away with it without punishment.

Promotion to the PL would have sent the message that spying was well worth it, as we we would have got our reward. So i understand why they might have expelled us, otherwise promotion would have meant we got away with it, and other clubs would think "Well they still went up, and got their reward of 250 million, so.it's worth breaking the rules".

Plus, THB doing the binocular signs to Ayling on the pitch, our fans dressing up as hedges, they probabaly thought we were as arrogant as f@ck and wanted to punish us.

As you know I live in Denmark and I haven’t heard one ex pro saying it was fair.
It’s overkill big time but the result is what it is.
I like Tonda but I can’t see him being involved with English football again.
The best we could do is clean the slate and appoint a new manager, preferably Thomas Frank.

Disproportionate but we had it coming.

I think that kicking us out was within the spectrum of what might have been fair.

The problem was that we spied after the end of the normal season and before the play-offs started, so we were trying to get an illegal advantage in a comp that then included only 4 teams.

If they wanted to impose a 'sporting' penalty in relation to those same play-offs, then kicking us out was really the only option.

Of course, they could have taken the view that although we were tying to cheat, we didn't gain too much advantage from it and that kicking us out would therefore have far greater consequences than the actual harm done.

But Boro were all over it, and we didn't seem to fight very hard, and if you're involved in something dishonest, you run the risk of having the book thrown at you. Which is what happened.

Of course it wasn’t fair and the main reason for that was because of that utter sh1t pr1ck Gibson. In a straight litigation fight between the two the EFL have not got a pot to p1ss in compared to Gimpy Gibson. As a result the EFL were petrified of the consequences of doing anything other than caving in to Gibson’s very publicly made demands that also carried a not even veiled threat of very expensive legal action against the EFL if the Gimp didn’t get its own way.

I was watching the most recent episode of Sky’s Sunday Extra on YouTube and one of the three journalists said the EFL must be complemented on finding an INDEPENDENT Panel Member who had played for Middlesbrough! He said, just imagine the thousands of unbiased lawyers out there that the EFL had to sift through and reject before finding this guy, that’s some achievement. Didn’t catch his name but good on you whoever you are.

No, it definitely wasn’t fair and ultimately it is a combination of factors that have led to us being where we are now
1 - The EFL rule introduced after Leeds 2019 lacking substance and clear direction in terms of set sanction for any future infringements, or even any clear guidance.
2 - The sh1t pr1ck Gibson having the previous form and the money to scare the cr@p out of the EFL who were running scared from Day 1
3 - The Boro connections inside the EFL
4 - The very publicly made demands and threats from Gibson that in tandem with a savvy Boro media team allowed them to completely control the narrative surrounding the whole saga. This included multiple changes to the base story an unacceptable breach of GDPR (Google it if you don’t know what it is). Basically the intern made a purchase using his own debit card at the (Gibson owned) facility attached to the golf course, the facility then committed a serious breach of the data protection act not only illegally obtaining the intern’s personal details from the transaction history but making those details very public. Serious breach? Up to a £1m fine, why is this not being pursued?
5 - The Southampton response, at the hearing; it looks like we turned up to a bush fire with a watering can. Only if the EFL had been equally or more scared of our perceived legal threat compared to Boro’s would we have stood any chance of a fair hearing, even then, with Boro’s influence inside the EFL it might well have still been an unfair outcome.

Am I in denial? NO
We cheated, I accept that.
We got caught.
We should be punished.
I take issue with the KO competition bit because it was to resolve a League issue, namely promotion, it was not the League Cup or FA Cup where you have nowhere else to go. I know you might think that’s stretching it a bit but they are not the same thing.
But this is unfair as it impacts so many people not at fault.

what should have happened is we should have been given a points deduction this season thus promoting Wrexham to the play offs, the borough home and away shouldnt have happened if the EFL were intent of giving us a heavy punishment,a far cleaner way to have dealt with it but this is the retards at the EFL were talking about

That, my friend, is as good a summary as we will get.

I would just add one thing...Gibbo played on the fact that the EFL was scared shitless the game could be postponed...therefore the whole thing descended into a binary decision...in? or out?.... no surprise what they chose.

I bet Gibbon regrets it now though. He could have kept quiet (hoping to win the semi) and 'discovered' the spying around now. An extortionate lawsuit with every chance of success would have followed. Instead in orchestrating the 'expulsion' and 're-instatement' narrative he put all his eggs in the one basket of winning at Wembley - Olly Mcburnie sat on that basket and the eggs are not even good for an omelette now. Tough luck Stevie boy!!!!

It's good to see that the issues around the make up of the disciplinary panel are now getting a public airing.

What I really want to know it whether any panel members declared an interest. Did David Winnie reveal that he had played for Boro and did Saints' lawyers let it slide?

And, seriously, wtf was Sports Resolutions doing appointing him and wtf was he doing accepting the gig.

I read something about them only having to declare things within the last three years. Plenty of former Saints players out there that haven't had much to do with the Club in the last three years but which Boro would have played merry hell about if appointed to the tribunal !!

I don't think a high percentage of Saints fans think it was fair. I've seen very few specifically saying that expulsion was a fair result. I think the divide is between those still fighting a doomed battle against the unfairness and those who are saying that it's over and we have to move on.

Yes we were shafted and we've got Gibbon , Sky, EFL etc to shout at. If we do have anger to spare it should probably be directed at those in the club responsible for our strategy once the news broke on that Thursday. Gibbon had a strategy and it worked (until about 5.30pm on Saturday anyway) while we were like rabbits in the headlights. The main reason that some of our fans ended up thinking we got what we deserved is because for days on end that was the only narrative in town. We weren't even told just how guilty we were until the day of the appeal so no wonder we were floundering. Many had convinced themselves that Salt was filming seagulls half a mile away from the training, while others hoped for the lone wolf idea. Reading that Tonda was guilty as charged on appeal day was tough to take. The club had no good reason to keep that quiet - our mindset now if we'd known the exact truth from the start would be different.

We have lots to be angry about but the only anger with any productive point now needs to be directed towards the guilty people at our club. Gibbon and his Sky and EFL pals can go to hell.

Can't find any timelines for the FA inquiry but the players are due to meet with the club on Wednesday. There is talk that they have consulted the PFA for advice as regards pay, bonuses, etc etc. I would imagine the owner himself will attend.

A meeting for the fly on the wall to spy on.!!

I wonder if the FA gig calls witnesses to appear in person or merely works off the existing paper trail.

Middlesbrough played in a final and made money out of that.
Middlesbrough debacle has put us back years.
I watched the playoff final and I was in no doubt we would have beaten either of them.
We would have kept that team together and with some quality players bought would have done well in the Premiership.
Middlesbrough would have struggled and so will Hull.
The fans and players have paid a very high price for someone wondering around watching other teams training, was it really on a phone?
