True but I’d rather be trying to bring in young talent, however flawed because we can’t afford perfect young players, and giving it a go than trying to succeed with only gnarly old pros that still don’t get us up and leave no legacy. Of course there has to be a balance and you need some experience, but I think we’re trying to build, whether you are in the hate Nourry category, a fan of his or like me sitting on the fence.
Part of that is accepting that they won’t all work out or they might take time to develop into effective players. Like I keep saying Iroegbunan and Jack Clarke were nothing special for us but they developed over time. There are people on here who are writing off Kone and Burrell after one competitive match when they each got the first ten goal haul we’d had in the club for years last seaosn and we were playing one of the best defences in the league. Plus Burrell in particular started slowly last season.
Of course Nourry may not be the right DOF. But I still think whoever is our DOF it’s not something that succeeds overnight and we need to be patient as well as critical when required. |  | | |

I agree also, but I also think there’s has been such a dearth of proper number 9s for many years now, that when one comes along who has a lot of the raw components of the traditional number 9 people get excited and perhaps are willing to see a lot more of the positives rather than negatives in his game and just enjoy it, it’s almost a throwback. |  | | |

Nobody has said any of what you wrote, you have inferred that, and made a big leap. And it’s not accurate to write “we all agreed”.
There are a few including myself who have questioned how good Kone actually is for some time. Nothing is knee jerk.
Are they a strong point? Yes.
But the striker topic is getting more nuanced and scrutinized because of Stephan’s change of formation. Ie should Burrell be force-fit out wide? (No), and is Kone better than Burrell as a single 9? (No). Both in my opinion.
This specific topic and these questions weren’t relevant last season, as both were getting picked up front. Hence why it is now being opened up for debate, as it’s all change. | | | |

I was thinking that it could be largely down to the higher spend but having looked through their major sales.
Hayden Hackney - Youth product - Sold for £16m
Finn Azaz - £2.5m, sold 18 months later for £12m
Emmanuel Lath - £6m, sold 18 months later for £18m
Morgan Rogers - £1m, sold 6 months later for £8m (and now just received £20m sell on from Chelsea)
Djed Spence - free, taken from Fulham youth, sold for £13m.
So it's only really Lath where they spent the money to get a return. I think it is beneficial that Middlesbrough are often near the top half of the league which helps with sell value compared to QPR.
I'm not sure I buy the better use of parachute payments, they were relegated in 2017, they were still recently taking very average QPR players like Grant Hall, Joe Lumley and Seny Dieng between the relegation and selling players for big money. |
Note the “hold” time on some of those big transfers out. Not long. Good season, sell. |  | | |

Have a look at the Millwall reaction thread where someone mentions on the last page not thinking he’s going to make our first eleven this season. I’m certainly not saying it’s a universal view of the players but just that there has been some overly harsh comments in my view so early in the season especially as I say given that they scored more goals each than we have had from strikers in a number of seasons despite it being their first season in the Championship.
As for his back to goal game it’s certainly hit and miss but I still think he can develop it. I also thought he was a bit hard done by when trying several times to set various players up for a shot just outside the penalty area and they either didn’t react fast enough or miscontrolled the ball. Of course sometimes you can judge a player very early on but personally I think neither of them have reached their ceiling yet. [Post edited 12 Aug 22:54]

That’s your opinion. I think that’s harsh to call after one match this season. Personally I think you start assessing individuals and the team in general after ten games at least. We haven’t even had one Championship match.
The comment was made in the context of his overall game not being good enough to make the team in this formation. I think some of our matches last season he was carrying the team in some ways with his work off the ball, in defence and creating chances for other players. There’s a difference in tone between ‘this player is working best in this formation ‘ and ‘that player isn’t good enough’. He seems to me someone who is really keen on working on his game, so hopefully he’ll continue to improve over time. | | | |
