West Brom are not happy. According to the BBC -The Baggies had appealed against the charge in the belief it was accidental, stating the ball's deflection off the Norwich goalkeeper "materially affected the ball's trajectory and left him [Heggebo] with less than 0.1 of a second to react"
Lets say that is true - he could have simply told the ref rather than run away celebrating like he had scored a perfectly legal goal. |  |

I did my refereeing training in Scunny with Neale Barry (who thankfully didn't remember my dad telling him he'd "always been a cnt" while playing a Lincs Cup game at Appleby Frodingham) and Dave Babski who ran the line in the Premier League and internationally for many years.

Prompting much criticism of the official.

I'm not sure the average footballer overthinks things to that degree.
We're talking about Robbie Fowler, not the lovechild of Machiavelli and Sun Tzu.
Footballer sees gift horse.
Footballer (usually) grabs gift horse.
Footballer doesn't defer gratification in the hope of really stitching up referee in ten minutes time.
There are two reasons I can think of for that:
1. Any referee stitched up that completely by a player will never forget it or trust that player again. And the other referees will catch on pretty quickly.
2. The player might get some kudos for being honest but he knows his manager and teammates won't thank him for it, so isn't going to be that honest twice in one game - remember when Paolo Di Canio stopped play when the Everton keeper went down? His manager (Aitch Redknapp) was not pleased about it:
"My God, the day he [Di Canio] caught the ball at Everton with five minutes to go," he recalled. "We needed the points badly and instead of heading it in he catches the ball so Gerrard can get treatment!
I’ve come off at the end and I’m like ‘what’s he done?’, Stuart Pearce comes thundering into the dressing room and says ‘Don’t let me near him, I’ll kill him, I’ll kill him, I’m going to rip his head off!’"

You could say that Stoke had a perfectly good winning goal chalked off at our place a couple of seasons ago.Our old mate Gavin Ward was the ref I think,and he waited until their player had scored before he blew his whistle for our free kick.

Handball preventing a goal scoring opportunity used to be classed as serious foul play hence the straight red, so surely scoring a goal by foul means should be the same? |  |

Was it? A player has been banned retrospectively by a committee for preventing a goal by handball? I've never heard of it and I searched for an example and there isn't one as far as I can see.
I'm surprised people are for this but not VAR, which would have sorted it on the day.
As I say, I am all for banning players for serious foul play that wasn't caught on the day and banning them, but for handball? IMO no. | |
