Its interesting that Stoke seem to be front and centre as the object of our derision this season. They have an excellent manager at this level, which Clive would always (well usually ) say is worth x amount of points over the season. I think I'll wait until we finish significantly higher than them at the end of the season before taking any pot shots at them |  | | |

Oh goodness, not a dig at you at E17 and apologies if it came across like that. My observation was more general then that, that there seems to be several on here that are ridiculing Stoke for there past performances in the Championship when our own form has been just as ‘mediocre’ to put it mildly. I think as recently as last season they were one of the early pace -setters and we would have been happy to swap places with them. If they end another season in the lower half of the league and we are serious play-off contenders, THEN we can take the pee imo. | | | |

I like a bet, and Stoke have been a mild obsession of mine... it's not just that they are staggeringly average/below-average, it's that they have been consistently over-estimated... the spreadbet market for them over the last few years (you can sell at the lower number of points if you think they'll do worse, or buy at the higher price if you think they'll do better)...
18/19 – opening price 77-79, final total 55
19/20 – opening price 70-72, final total 56
20/21 – opening price 68.65-70.5, final total 60
21/22 – opening price 65.5.-67.5, final total 62
22/23 – opening price 65.5-67.5, final total 53
23/24 – opening price 64-66, final total 56
24/25 - opening price 65.5-67.5, final total 51
25/26 - opening price 57-59, final total 55
So you'd have made money going against them every season all the way back to 2018/19. This year again the opening price was 57-59.

There's a couple of really interesting bits in this...
- Stoke are telling their supporters that they're pushing into 'data led recruiting'
- Despite this, Stoke are making signings that are being touted around by agents and therefore half the Championship are interested in, whether they fit in their team or where their manager wants the team to go.
- Stoke continue to make poor, expensive signings.
Fact is, everybody's recruiting with data now. The data on all these sites, WyScout, FotMob whatever, it's there for everybody. Apart from Brighton and Brentford everyone is looking at the same numbers. There's a reason half the league had a sniff of that Galves lad who's ended up at West Brom. There's a reason the Twitter analytics account you follow, some of them really very good indeed, are able to produce these transfer documents every summer with 20 targets on them and lo and behold most of them get picked up by Championship clubs.
"Data led recruitment" being used by clubs as a PR line to make them sound better than they are. Like every pre-season is the "toughest I've ever experienced" every summer, at every club, every year. Like every new manager's first job is "to get them fitter" - cue comments about double training sessions. The raw data Brighton and Brentford use probably isn't all that different from what is available to everyone else.
It's the models they build to extract insights from the data that give them their edge.
That's why they hoover up maths and physics PhD's.
I still suspect Brighton are going a bit too far with their reliance on data. Things like cutting back on scouts because they have so much faith in their player profiling, or using body language to psychologically profile players is a bit dubious to my mind. But we will see how it goes for them.
