Afternoon All
I wondered if anyone has any tips for visiting Cork? What to visit, places to stay, etc?
All a bit last minute as we usually go much further south to visit friends who basically take us everywhere and do all the thinking for us, but one of them has recently become unwell needs to rest, so having already paid for the flights, we thought we would see what Cork has to offer.
All suggestions and ideas will be very much appreciated đ

I once went to the oval for a few creamy beanies, and commented on how they were playing Holy F**k, one of my all time favourites live bands. The barman kinda no sold me, but when I looked at my receipt it had a discount on it listed as "Good Taste".

Actually I was staying in West Cork on the way to Kerry last weekend. Kinsale wasnât as nice as I remembered and Skibbereen wasnât up to much but Schull and the country beyond was lovely and the Beara peninsula spectacular. Apparently itâs been lashing down all year and Iâve never seen the place so emerald. |  | | |

I was blown away by the mountains and coastline around Glengarriff in the west when I visited in December 2024. |

I stayed two nights at the Premier Inn. It's on the river and easy walking distance of pubs and restaurants. It's modern, clean and has a bar. | | | |

We were in Cork last year. Stayed at the River Lee. Great breakfast. Full of Americans. Loved the pubs. Did a side trip to Kinsale. The weather was great, so we enjoyed the Costa del Cork!! | | | |

Just back, so a couple of bits n bobs to consider for anyone else planning a trip.
We stayed at The Hotel Isaac on MacCurtain St. Lovely, boutique style hotel, nice rooms, excellent breakfast (resist the Full Irish though, as it wasnt as massive as you might think and the other options are nicer) and just a 5 min walk from the 225/6 bus stop for the airport. Itâs has a very popular bar and restaurant there but the noise isnât too bad at all.
We barely left that area in the evenings, truth be told. First night was the Cin E, where they had a trad band first, then a fantastic country/blues trio, but we preferred the place next door, The Corner House, where we went the next night. Two of the three musicians from the night before played, but a completely different set - seems there is Blues collective in Cork that calls itself the Lee Delta Blues - I mean, how cool is that?
We liked The Shelbourne pub too, fantastic atmosphere there on Friday night.
Food, we ate at Thomsonâs one night and Gallagherâs the other - both were pretty good and around Euro 23-25 for a main course. Great Beamish & Beef pie in the latter. Book in advance, though!
Did stuff already mentioned above during the day - Blarney was lovely. The queue for the actual stone was massive so we didnât bother but as we wandered round then the story of it was shown by the lake, so that was good enough for us.

I was just out walking the dog and I thought to myself, sht, itâs East, isnât it. Although to be fair, I think I had my Ipad upside down at the time. Regardless, Iâm someone who always walks in the wrong direction when I come out of a shop. |

Places to stay:
As ever in Ireland, cheap digs will be a problem.
The River Lee Hotel on Western Road is a very good hotel - well-run, good food, very central to the town centre and to UCC and Fitzgerald Park (both nice for walks).
The Imperial is THE old-school classy hotel in the centre - a bit middle-class posh and a bit up itself but it is still a fine place to crash.
The Metropole is on MacCurtain Street, so very central. Has a good name, but I don't know anyone who's stayed there lately. Worth checking out, though.
Food:
The café upstairs in The English Market is always good, and has a nice buzz about it.
The Glass Curtain on MacCurtain Street is excellent.
Goldies is a modern fish place, Michelin but cheap enough.
Paradiso is a damn good veggie restaurant.
Miyazaki is a Japanese place for food on the go - only a few seats.
Mayne's is an old chemist on Pembroke Street that does great tapas and wine (check out upstairs as well), go out the back door and you're into Crane lane which is a collection of bars in an old cinema - soul bar, live bar, outdoor bar, all aimed at the 30's upwards. This is the late spot in town for anyone over 25, open until 2am, but good craic at any time of day or night.
Pubs:
MacCurtain Street area (this the now the busiest street in town, and worth a night):
Sin Ă© - trad and fine pints.
The Corner House - just next door, also trad and pints.
Lowery's - old school pints, well-run.
Cask - gin and wine.
MacCurtain Wine Cellar - ahm, wine. Nice bites too.
Patrick St area:
The Mutton Lane Inn - ancient pub, dark and musty, great, no tv, great background tunes.
The Oval - more of the same.
Callanan's - best pint of Murphy's in town, no tv.
The Hi-B - a belter of a pub. Great pint, no tv, and no phones allowed!
Tom Barry's - a small stroll (near Miyazaki) but worth it for an afternoon pint (inside or outside).
The Hayfield Manor - bit posh, but has a nice garden for sipping away if the weather's fine.
Things to do:
Blarney Castle is a bus ride, but worth it.
The Crawford Gallery can be good, depending on what's on show.
I've never been in Cork Public Museum, but might be worth a sconce, it's in the lovely Fitzgerald Park and there's a nice café as well.
Never been in Cork City Gaol either, sorry.
The English Market is damn nice, to be fair (and the Mutton Lane Inn is just off it).
Day trips - Cobh (train), Kinsale (bus), Spike Island are all very popular for different reasons, depending on your taste. Worth reading up on them.
