How QPR are building for the future - Christian Nourry interview the CEO show on 09:19 - Jun 23 with 2701 viewsTK1

The thing to remember is that Nourry is an employee, not a shareholder. He has invested zero capital in the the club. He takes a wage.

He will have his own KPIs. And the board, who now have a fair amount of experience in dealing with football employees will have their own view on his successes/failings. He may not wish to put time frames on promotions or whatever...but the board will. The owner will.

I doubt very much they employed him to have him publicly say things like he's changed the expectation now to "16th to 20th being an underwhelming season": that was already the case. Warburton was dispensed with for hitting 13th, 9th, 11th after significant player investment. Last season saw significant player investment, with more holes needing to be filled this summer. We finished 15th. The board will expect 12th to 8th this season minimum.

Football is a horrible, backstabbing business and QPR is historically especially so: rival agents will be in the ear of the board about the CEO role all the time. People will be angling for it even when it's filled and the board will be only too aware that they chose Nourry directly over Steve Gallen, who has done so well in the same time period at Millwall.

I think this is a very big season for Nourry. I really want him to succeed because then we all succeed and have a lot of fun. But if he underperforms with the first team squad, head coach in 26/27, then this time next summer we will not be watching these grandstanding video interviews from him.

I also think it would be good for everyone, including CN, for the owner to address a full interview before the start of next season. Sometimes the dictator must also address his subjects. But maybe they are keeping that powder dry for stadium/ Project Big Ben biz...

I think people judging him by finishing league position alone is also not always the right barometer to measure him by.

If we had taken the last six games more seriously, instead of attempting to ease in injured players, giving younger players even more opportunities and testing fringe players in games that had no real long term meaning.

15th could have just as easily have been 9th.

Six games to go, we were safe and also had no realistic hope of the play offs either. We took our foot off the gas.Think people can focus too much on the league position with how the season panned out.

Totally agree with this- particularly as (unlike the Premier League) there is no financial award for each position which could make a difference to a club like us. IIRC it doesn't matter (financially) whether we finish 7th or 21st. I take the point about future player sales, but we can get too hung up on league position - context is everything.

League finishing position is absolutely the most important measure for judging QPR's first team by. We are about to start our 12th consecutive season in the Championship. If you can't judge a team by league table and revenue, what other measure can a Sporting CEO in year four of his role be judged by?

I only mentioned the league position as Nourry did, boasting he'd raised QPR's expectation of an underwhelming season being to finish 16th to 20th. That's not true. Warburton was dismissed in finishing 13th. Ferdinand left when the club imploded six months later.

And we took those last six games seriously. There's no way we were able to win those that we lost and make the ground up to 9th. We weren't good enough. (And if we didn't take them seriously, I want my money back)

I think you're significantly overestimating the acumen of our Board. I see them as Springfield to Nourry's Lyle Lanley.

Think you're right about the Lyle Lanley bit. But I also think that despite their many historic calamities you are underestimating the board, in particular Gnanalingam, for whom Nourry provides useful all-encompassing public cover currently. That can change. You don't invest £20 million a year without a bigger picture.

The Nourry obsession of some is really quite concerning.

I get he is self-promoting and pretty arrogant. But big picture, so what? He is young. You can spend your every waking hour being Hercule Poirot interrogating his CV if you want. It was clearly a risky appointment of someone extremely young, ambitious thruster who has no doubt added a lot of topspin to that cv to make it look less thin.

We can spend the entire next season going over all these same, tired points.

But why not just wait to see how the season transpires? The one that even his critics here acknowledge will be the one he is judged on?

For all Nourry's faults (which I have acknowledged), does anyone really want to go back to Lee Hoos as CEO (or someone like him). As another posted suggested, he just looked like some exhausted old guy who had run out of ideas and enthusiasm. Hoos didn't seem very personally ambitious: was that really a good thing? He was also pretty arrogant BTW. He spent big on old players and loans with a big "hit and hope" promotion push. But where was the legacy there? What were we building? Nourry might indeed fail, but the next guy will probably come in and try and build on the same strategy.

How QPR are building for the future - Christian Nourry interview the CEO show on 17:40 - Jun 22 by Hunterhoop

Just a few points for the record:

1) He had not been advising top European clubs and Investors for 5 years before he joined QPR. That is not true.

https://www.imperial.ac.uk/bus

As per this article, where he says it himself, he was at Imperial Uni (after finishing at Oxford) in 2019/2020 (so left in June 2020). That is 3.5 years from when he was appointed CEO at QPR, and 2.5 years from when began the one year audit of the club, we were told he carried out before being offered the CEO role.

Then factor in that he founded HB Media in April 2021 according to his own words here, and they filed accounts for the financial year ending April '22, it would seem that it was somewhere after this and before early 2023 that he joined Retexo. So, that would make it c. 1.5 years of experience at Retexo before he was made CEO of QPR, and c. 6 months before he actually started advising QPR.

I know everyone is getting bored of my pointing out this type of thing, but, please forgive me, I just think the truth matters, especially from leaders, and especially from leaders of my football club.

2) We did use Data prior to his arrival. To say we did not is simply untrue, again. I cannot believe Andy Belk is too enamoured with this narrative. He wasn't just a notepad and pen prior to Christian's arrival. Belk has been at the club since 2015 (i think) as Head of Data Analysis and Head of Recruitment (promoted into). We've been using data for over a decade. Now, it doesn't look like we were particularly successful with it, but we were using it. Indeed, the signings of Cherry, Ngbakoto, Polter, Wszolek, and others from that era were "data-led" signings from middling European clubs

3) The leadership style - all for healthy conflict and bringing issues to a head. To say that is "more European" is nonsense. It's not a geographical thing; it's standard leadership. BUT you have healthy conflict AFTER you have built trust. And you build trust through authenticity, humility, vulnerability, and transparency. Then, when you challenge and tackle the big issues, people tend to respond better and less defensively.

4) "The ultimate ambition is promotion to the Premier League", but we're a long way off. Why are we a long way off after investing what we have? In what areas? Hull were a lot further off 12 months ago? Millwall were further off 3 years ago. Sunderland certainly were further off 3 years ago. This is your 3rd full season since taking charge, and 4th since advising the club. Could we put a timeframe on the ambition? Or explain what we're doing to bridge the big gap in preparedness for it?

The whole thing feels like a puff piece for his own brand, than the club. It feels like the sort of thing someone would do who is trying to put himself in the shop window.

"I just think the truth matters, especially from leaders, and especially from leaders of my football club"

I can forgive mistakes, lies I cannot forgive.

Keep going Hunter.

I don't think anyone is giving Nourry's CV the Poirot treatment.

What grinds my gears is that his back story gets more elaborate with each new telling.

If he stopped pumping out embellished BS about his 'achievements' and got on with the job at hand I'm sure we would all be a lot happier.

He's not replaced Lee Hoos. Lee Hoos is still there, as Chairman and on the board - effectively Nourry's boss.

He's taken on elements of Hoos's role and all of Ferdinand's role. In terms of not "wanting to go back to Hoos" - agree. But did I prefer for all their faults the manner Ferdinand, Ramsey and Furlong went about representing QPR as opposed to Nourry and Ben Williams? I did.

We weren't talking about Nourry before this filmed interview with him this week appeared made up of some contradictions, half-truths and gaslighting. When he stops publicly lying, we can stop discussing the lies.

It's not a contradiction, though, to hope next season is really successful for him though, as I do hope that.

Have already acknowledged he comes across as arrogant, and this does him few favours. I was just trying (to balance the constant stream of vitriol about him on here) to put the counter view. You don't need to be Sigmund Freud to understand why he puffs himself up (ill-advised tho' it is). He knows he is very young, he knows he has a very thin CV, so he is insecure. He wasn't qualified for the job, but a couple of years in he probably now is (more or less). So lets just see how he gets on this season. Last season was a very near miss in terms of being able to show league progression. As Clive remarked, we would have to be exceptionally unlucky (or I would add, Ben Williams would need shooting) if we have a third season in a row devastated by injuries.

I think that's fair enough.

But a smarter man than Nourry would know that it's a mistake to keep drawing attention to what is indeed a very thin CV.

Far better to concentrate on delivering some tangible success here. Then no one would care what his CV looked like.

This is why he worries me, Kensal.

Bad enough that I don't trust what he says, but I don't trust his judgement either.

I'm amazed that the owners are tolerating it, and that they deem the club safe in his hands.

I met Tony Bloom a few weeks ago, when I told him our CEO was 28 years old his first reaction was "I think that's a bit young to be in that role".

Let's see how we go this season, I'm interested to see how long Hoos and Ruben give him; but then I don't think they can face the process of hiring a new CEO.

The only positive for me is that we still have Stephan in situ and I'm hoping he can build on last season's finish (depending of course on what squad he has available to him come 1st September).

Stainrod, if someone is willing to lie so blatantly about stuff that can be shown to be untrue, what else will they will be willing to lie about? How do you trust them and their intentions when they tell you something?? Do you not have that concern?

As others have said, if he was to tell the truth, own up to his fortune, and tell us about all the things he is trying to improve at the club (not what a great job he’s done to date), and what the vision and objectives are, what the key milestones are on that journey, I wouldn’t care so much about his background, because he’d be demonstrating good leadership skills.

This is the season to judge him on his output, on his results, I agree. But a leader should be judged on the “how”, their behaviours, on an ongoing basis. And the “how” should matter at a club like QPR. And it matters to me. We are not Chelsea. I will continue to judge him on the “how”. There is nothing stopping him taking feedback on board and adapting his approach. Again, if he’s unwilling to take on board feedback and adapt, it doesn’t indicate much maturity or leadership skills, which in turn should be concerning, no?

I want the club to succeed. The quickest and easiest way for that is for him to succeed, so I want that too. I really do. But if he does or says things that make me believe he could be harm the club or hindering its chances of success, I’m going to raise it, because I care. To intimate there should be an amnesty on criticism is silly. Stop lying and people won’t call it out. Pretty simple.

So, we don't bother with the cups, and we're not bothered about the league position?

Are we in the right business, here? Shut the club down and turn Loftus Road into a soft play.

the last interview by hoos basically said the coming season isnt going to be based purely on results but performances , so we get tanked 5-0 but its ok as clark salter had a decent game before he went off injured after 25 mins .

we would have to dig down for a soft play area , keep up clive

Are Nourry or Hoos our only options?

Why is using a forum about a football club to discuss its performance and its leadership an obsession? Especially when one of the leaders participated in an interview that is about QPR and put on the web?

Fernandes, the mob before him, Paladini all featured on message boards. All prompted a range of views.

The arrangements at QPR are unusual. Nothing wrong with that, it could be a stroke of genius but it will obviously attract comment. The fact that the narrative is not yet matching the experience inevitably leads to debate.

Without rehearsing some of the many pertinent points already made, the club has not helped its cause. So it is hardly a surprise if some fans are in need of seeing some tangible evidence of improvement in performance.

If next season, we have first team performance that is consistently better that what has gone before, maybe a cup run as well? Then I am sure that plaudits will rain down on the leadership. In the meantime there will be questions, there will be some anxiety about the direction of travel.

It is not unreasonable for those who have an emotional investment in QPR to be very interested in what the leaders say and what they do. It may be an obsession, but not in the pejorative sense as suggested.

left field idea , we could employ say an agency wtih huge experience of looking for those very sort of people , when they fail we could ask the bloke who was tasked with looking for those very people to take the job ,

call me mental but it could work .

Well I have already acknowledged that IF this season doesn’t show progression we will need to find an answer to that question.

But given budgets I suspect our choices are between someone on the way up and someone on the way down - not someone who is already there
