I just feel with Stamenic playing deep and we are pressing high, spaces are found by opposition teams playing out from the back and yet us playing out from the back cannot find the gaps. We seem to get forward better later in the game but we ended up playing without firstly Burgess and then Lissah which caused an issue at the back
I can't see a plan for attacking in that I can't see how we are aiming to attack. Wingers drift in when play is on the opposite side of the field, cutting down our options to switch play. The centre of the attack gets crowded making both picking a pass and driving through difficult, Idah struggles to hold the ball and link up play, I'm sure Matos sees the problem and that's why we have three new players with attacking skills At the moment Tymon is our best bet when he drives down the wing to cross or cuts inside and makes a pass.
We just have to move the ball faster in every area of the pitch.

Lissah looks the business nice to see him stepping up into the midfield to close them down anticipating the opposition pass thus keeping us going forward, something Stamenic didn't do as he dropped deep all very familiar stuff to be honest they had some nice moves to get themselves up the park and put some dangerous crosses into our box which they or us couldn't connect with. We worked the ball up the park well only to come back again.Just looked lively but there was little drive through the middle, Fulton came on and Stamenic moved to the right where Just played instead of Franco and Stamenic seem to get into the game more ie in a position higher up the pitch when recieving the ball. Our goal came from a mistake and Opoku took advantage from a wide angle to catch the goal keeper out of his goal. Horrible tactics from the opposition. Inoussa came on and looked lively as he did when he first arrive but as then needs more game time. Walta came on for Widell and given the midfield was higher up the pitch he got into dangerous positions as we press forward and changed Burgess for Carter Heywood the opposition became intent on trying to get back in the game and they got clear as Lissah cramped up but Vigouroux did enough to retrieve the ball on the line. Lissah was immediately swapped for Parker, Opoku looks lively enough and was swapped for Ronald who did well enough Eom came on for Yeo who tried but needed game time out wide and Eom moved inside when Inoussa came on, Vipotnik has the last 10 mins for Idah. First half all very tidy except for those incisive counter attacks which weren't dealt with properly, we pressd hard but got opened up, not much penetration on our part often ending back with our keeper and , second half became niggly, the game opened up a little but it is about time we look forward as a first option, long balls employed that didn't get us the chances that we were looking for. Opoku and Just will need to adapt but looked lively Yeo was tidy but wanted to come inside from the left. I wouldn't want to get rid of any of the players who featured today.

That is as I saw it. The full back tucking into the middle seems strange to me, we saw it last year and it was exactly what England did against Argentina to their cost. We leave the wingers far too much space at times but it is not just the wingers, they worryingly opened us up in that first half with balls from out wide after playing through us, wide balls that went all the way across the box, if we keep letting teams unchallenged progress quickly up the field then better teams are going to and have punished us, once teams get pasted that initail press we were very open.
The new players looked lively but very similar to how we have seen of new signings for years start off, examples of that have been Benson, Laird, Widell, Inoussa and Ronald to name but a few. If you don't get thr ball forward quickly to players and have players who can then get forward in support of them they will be isolated. Inoussa caused their defence issues with his pace and the long ball got us up the park but he ended up isolated trying to take on too many players instead of holding the ball to enable the support eventually to arrive or switch the play quickly. We have good players but the lack of experience shows at times.
It will be very interesting to see who Matos will pick for Saturday's Cup game. I see no way that Lissah shouldn't start but the only way to accommodate him would be play 5 across the back and yet will that happen? You could say that Stamenic played as that fifth defenders on yesterday. Lissah stepping up to close the ball in the midfield was a pleasure to see it got us on the front foot we were able to get up field to where our forward midfielders were and not make them have to work so hard to track back to support a defence that drop off to keep possession of the ball. There did seem to be a number of times that a quick forward ball opened the opposition up but for me not enough of them, the backward pass, the safe option but that loses us position further up the pitch, we have seen our midfield tire in the past and get over run having to get forward to support the forward press then drop back to restart the possession process from defence it is energy sapping and at times impossible to keep up.
Lot to be said for keeping things tight but if you have better players than the opposition do you play in a way to force that better players advantage home?

Spot on. We really must buy a CDM of note or entrust it to Lissah who sounded like he had a very good game.
I've kinda resigned myself to the fact that he'll be starting as our DM. Just hope he can show more there this season than he did the last. Maybe having more movement ahead of him may draw out the quicker pass.

Stamenic looked surprised that when Fulton came on as Central midfielder that Matos asked him to play in Franco's position after taking Just off. Stamenic now playing a role further up the pitch looked comfortable in what he was being asked to do, the team shape looked better, Fulton getting those challenges in the middle quicker and keeping us on the front foot further up the pitch just as we saw Lissah do just before the switch of position for Stamenic Lissah was tighter to the intended opposition ball reciever get a foot in. We saw last season when Galbraith moved to fullback he kept the winger in sight and close at hand getting that early challenge in, think he did it in the midfield at time very similar to O'Brien. Fulton did it well when he came on and Stamenic looked more effective further forward. The swap of position for Stamenic didn't last long as more changes were made to give players time on the pitch Walta came on and looked good so while we looked better going forward we became a little more inexperienced at the back which is understandable with initially Carter Heywood replacing Burgess so we lost the height advantage then Ather Parker came on as we lost Lissah to cramp. Ronald, Eom and Inoussa all looked lively and Vip also came on get across the front defender at a corner to get a header in but off target. With all the new players and all the changes we played well at times, got opened up at times but on the whole remained in control of the game even with all the changes, would I have liked to see us tighten areas of play up or more forward passes into feet higher up the park yes but as an home introduction of a team with new players satisfied even if as Keith said the opposition weren't the best but they had a number of good players and were a very niggly team who took the dark arts to a level and it was nice to get the win even if it was a "friendly"
A final not so few words on getting a foot in, the team looks a lot better when they are tigher to their players not allowing the opposition time to turn on the ball but the better the opposition players the more chance of being outfoxed but as seen with England in that first half against Argentina crowding good players out and getting the ball forward quickly but as seen in the second half give space to players who can provide quality will be our downfall. Man City ethos has been about closing spaces down to get on top of teams, in the league Cup game against us they didn't initially do it well and we open them up they closed the game down while we dropped off to defend the game straight after the goal far too early. Would like to see us kill games off while we ensure our defence remain tight both with the help of a dynamic strong midfield.

Think Fulton did have his confidence dent being side lined after the play off final serving his ban then not being picked, his play there after became very reserved except for a few instances, we saw under Martin that he made a difference but we had lost Downes by then I think may be wrong memory play tricks .Under Matos he seens to have regained his zest for the game and playing on the front foot more. Stamenic I think will grow into the role with help maybe the Franco role may suit him and the team better.all about finding the right formation to suit the team and the situation especially with the number of substitutions available to be made.
