Never want it to be too cosy, we’ve seen where that leads in the past.
Getting cross with the media for telling the truth is a deeply unwelcome trend among many of today’s leaders, and massively counterproductive

Really bizarre behaviour not to engage with someone who may be critical from time to time - it just looks weak. Nourry really doesn't help himself sometimes (and I'm saying that as someone who thinks he has done some good stuff, like addressing the goalkeeping situation which they cocked up last season).

Gab is great. It’s easy to criticise but he’s the most informed pundit out there on the EFL. He really seems to listen to his interviewees. And producing this level of content on every side is no mean feat. He might occasionally be a bit verbose, but I think he’s simply trying to be measured and rounded.

He did get that one right, and it was quite a call. But back in 2023 he was the only pundit not predicting us to go down. His reasoning was that Gareth Ainsworth had done a great job at Wycombe and was underrated. So he doesn't get them all right.

I was interested in Gab’s suggestion that our style of play under JS, involving more pressing etc could have been a contributory factor in our injury problems last season. I’ve wondered about this, too, and also whether JS’s failure to rotate Madsen and Birrell made them more vulnerable.
That doesn’t mean I have a particular problem with JS - it’s just that our injury issues shouldnt just be attributed to Ben Williams. When you add in a recruitment policy that seems to prepared to take risks on players with known injury histories, it seems to me this has been a collective failure rather than a singular one.

He’s on an adjacent path to what I have heard from someone who really should know.
Apparently Stephan’s pre-season training involves a ball very early on, unlike a lot of traditional head coaches (where it’s running, drills, and strength and conditioning stuff before you get a ball out). Apparently (I am not qualified to know if this is true or not) using a ball early if the players’ bodies aren’t ready and/or the fitness and conditioning team aren’t on the same page with the work they’re putting the players through, can result in more injuries. That is main reason given for last season’s injuries.
This pre-season, they’ve had a year to plan. This summer the players came back a week or more early (compared to last year), which I reckon was part of the efforts to correct what happened last year whilst also enabling Stephan to get the balls out when he wanted.
Now, I’m not sure that explains Poku tearing one hamstring twice and the other once, across the season. Or Madsen and Burrell getting injuries in early Jan. But that’s the thinking. It’s not Stephan’s playing style, it’s his pre-season training preferences, which took the club by surprise.
No excuses this year though. We’ve had a year to plan for pre-season, and the club have had a whole season to understand Stephan’s playing style too…
