New signing imminent 15:14 - Aug 3 with 11888 views1teeminants

Tonda Eckert says Southampton are moving closer to completing a new signing after making encouraging progress in the transfer market ahead of the new Championship season.

With Ross Stewart having departed, adding another striker remains one of the club's priorities. While Eckert did not reveal which position a potential new arrival would play in, he hinted that supporters may not have to wait much longer for an announcement.

Speaking during Southampton's training camp in Germany, Eckert explained that negotiations are progressing well but stressed that transfers are rarely completed quickly due to the number of parties involved.

He said the club has made positive progress and hopes a deal can be finalised and announced in the near future.

Discussing possible departures, Eckert acknowledged that interest from other clubs is to be expected after the team's performances last season. He believes that attracting attention is a sign the squad has performed well and is confident the club will make the right decisions over any transfer business.

The Saints head coach also expressed his trust in sporting director Johannes Spors and the board, saying he is confident they will assemble a strong squad capable of competing this season, even if some transfer decisions take longer than others.

Eckert admitted he would prefer the transfer window to close before the start of the campaign, as most managers would, but accepted that the current system means clubs often have to deal with uncertainty after the season has already begun.

Despite that, he feels Southampton are in a strong position thanks to the core of players already at the club, giving the team a solid foundation while any remaining additions or departures are resolved 🙌❤🤍❤🤍

I don’t think it will be this guy. He would cost over 20 million and I can’t see saints spending that amount even if we sell Shea Charles. Only big clubs like Bournemouth can spend money like that.

So, probably a Bournemouth cast-off on loan then?

This is the problem with incompetently letting Ross slip out of our hands. It would cost serious money to replace him with the same quality. Dragan originally said the only planned addition to the squad was "another 10" i.e. Dobbin.

But one possibility here is that we get good money for Shea Charles and use that to spend on another centre forward, while filling in the midfield spot with what we have, which might mean Bragg, Matsuki or maybe other youngsters playing where Charles would have done. Also, we may get lucky with offers for Ramsdale or a collection of the other misfits, so we might be able to find the money. Whether we're willing to spend it, or find the right person to spend it on might be be different questions.

What’s incompetent about letting a 30 year old injury prone striker go who showed no loyalty to a club that nursed him through 3 seasons
His record on average over his three seasons was 13 mainly sub appearances and three goals per season

It was incompetent not to sign him up for the 1 year extension when we had the chance. The fact we didn't sign means we either have to spend big money now, or play Ben Brereton Diaz as centre forward. Neither of those are good options.

There was no downside to signing him up. The very worst that could have happened would have been we ended up letting him go for free (to Swansea or whoever) instead of keeping him for another year. That would have cost us nothing.

So, signing would have given us a big benefit for no cost. That means it was pretty incompetent not to do it.

Spors gave a different version at the Fans Forum. He said that all the players were asked whether they could commit 100% to the club after spygate and Stewart couldn't. Spors stated he only wanted to keep players who were 100% on board.

He did say that but surely the key thing was that Swansea offered a contract for 3 years, whereas we only offered 1 year. Understandable as he was injured for most of his previous contract. But obviously he will opt for the 3 year deal.

cant blame him for taking a 3 year deal,if he had got another injury which in his case was very probable saints would have dropped him without a thought.

Spors was talking about having those conversations with players AFTER spygate. He's not telling the whole truth. We should have signed the extension with Ross in April at the latest. It was obvious by then that it was the right thing to do. He's one of the best in the Championship, we'd worked out how to keep him fit and obviously other clubs would want him if we didn't. It was a no brainer to extend his contract in April.

But Spors decided to play cute with the contract and not activate the extension. That showed that the club weren't 100% committed to Ross. If we'd been promoted, we'd probably have let him go. So when spygate happened and suddenly Spors needed Ross to sign, Ross understandably said well, if you're not 100% committed to me then I'm not 100% committed to you, I'll have a look at what else is on offer. Unsurprisingly he then took the offer of a 3 year deal when we'd only offer him 1 year.

So, saying Ross wasn't 100% committed is bollox really. If Spors had done the right thing and signed the extension in April, then none of this would have happened and Ross would be our 100% committed player today. He'd have been playing out the last year of his contract and determined to show the world that they should sign him as a free agent in summer 27.

Swansea offered him a 3 year contract and at 30 I don't blame him for signing it
Shame he's gone as when he's fit he's a very good striker in this league

Hope we don't try to be too clever by signing some nipper from a prem clubs academy, we really need someone who knows this league and has some experience

...one other thing on Ross... it's obvious that Ross didn't have an issue about spygate because he and Tonda were having friendly chats all through the summer. If he'd been angry about spygate and didn't want to 100% commit for that reason, then they wouldn't have been having friendly chats and Tonda wouldn't have told the press that he thought there was a good chance Ross would stay. Obviously Ross had an issue with the contract, or the lack of it, rather than with Tonda.

3 year contract compared to what we were offering him, what was it 1 or 2 years?
As I said, I don’t blame him, I’d have done the same thing myself in his position

I will be interested to see how he does there, if he can stay fit, and it’s a big if imo, he should do well. Will also be interesting to see how Swansea manage his minutes on the pitch and if he’s capable of playing 3 times a week

I can see your argument but I don't think we can go into this season with Stewart and Larin as our strike force for the entire season - we have to buy a decent 20 goal per season striker

CF is the only position where we struggle to have decent options.. The chances are Stewart would be highly likely to pick up a lengthy injury which leaves Larin who will be 32 half way through the season

Apart from that Stewart wanted a 2 year deal and wouldn't sign without one

All we had to do was activate the extension on his contract and he was our player this year if we wanted him. If we'd done it in April there'd have been no issue.

I get your point about him being injured. You think he was a high risk and he certainly has been. I don't think he's still such a risk because the signs were we'd learned how to manage him. His injuries were almost all hamstring injuries and that's just a question of how much work you make him do and how you manage the recovery. It's not like he kept having ligament issues. I think we'd learned the right formula (90 mins over 2 games a week). We'll never know for sure because what Swansea do will probably be different, but they clearly think it's a manageable issue.

My main concern now is how we replace him. I'm not sure Divin Mubama is the answer, but if we'd had Larin, Stewart and Mubama then I'd have been happy with that as our 3 options. We need something like that now, except with someone else instead of Stewart (who we'll now have to pay a transfer fee for!). It's certainly possible to have 3 centre forward options if we loan out or sell the likes of Diaz, Downs and Archer, which I still hope we do.

Mubama has scored two goals for City in pre season including one against Inter Milan . Hopefully He will be very keen to impress at Saints . He wasn’t great on loan at Stoke but hopefully Tonda can bring out the best in him.
