The main problem for our defence is Vigs putting us under pressure,he gives players balls to players in Cu-de-sacs ,sometimes like yesterday the balls are too far in front or behind the player or with too much pace which is difficult to control and we lose possession
Stop the short slow goal kick crap that invites pressure all the time and go long and wide sometimes
Let the centre halves do the simple things and we look and play better

Vig’ s distribution is awful and he seems to find touch as easily as Phil Bennett
We have two full backs who allow players to stroll past them, both terrible defenders,neither tackles well and both shocking headers of a ball
Cabango did make a superb tackle yesterday though
Burgess is lacking balance evidenced by his spectacular own goal at the World Cup .
He might be a nice chap and a good pro but he’s simply been found wanting too often.
We bought in Welsh to surely improve our defence but it’s more than centre backs
We have loads of options in midfield and Opuku looks promising as does Just but there are some pretty handy attackers in this league .

Lissah played well yesterday as did Key when he came on.Welsh has a decent pedigree so I'd like to see him start at centre back. Was never a fan of the cabango Burgess partnership but obviously a very unfortunate way to break the pairing up.

Agree with this but I’d say it’s nit Vig’s fault because this is what they practice on the training ground. Why? I have no idea because as soon as we invite the press we are either caught out giving possession away or kicking long, giving possession away. It slows the whole game down.
By all means invite the press but as soon as they’ve committed to that get the ball to our flanks quicker. This is no f=different to last year which is disappointing.

Mark the widemen tighter so they can’t receive the ball in the first place and that cuts down on balls played into the box
When the ball is crossed into the box just clear it ,don’t try to get cute ,that goes for the keeper as well who could challenge for the ball in the air and punch ( he did a few times yesterday by the way)
Stop putting ourselves under pressure with slow pointless goal kick nonsense
Do the simple things at the back , there’s nothing wrong with putting your foot through the ball to clear the danger
Stop Vigaroux putting players under pressure with crap distribution
Get Stamenic playing further forward and moving the ball forward,not the slow sideways and back ambitionless rubbish

It was obvious for most of last season that defensively we were very poor. Real failing was that our two centre backs cannot play together. They both possess the same frailties, slow, prone to a major error at least once a game and poor with the ball at feet, neither will bring the ball out from the back which has been missing since Darling left. I had hope Matos would have done something about this during the transfer window, but it was looking like he was going to stick with the same pairing at least for the start of the season. Really horrible to see a player pick up a major injury on the eve of the season, but now this has happened, its forced Matos into making a change that has been long overdue. Secondly, both our full/wing backs are great going forward but both cannot defend at this level, so again one more for Matos to think about.
Finally, whilst I cover our weaknesses, am I the only one that cant fathom out, why we haven't prioritised bringing in an offensive midfielder, that has pace, power and a physical presence and is comfortable beating a man and carrying the ball at pace 30-40 yds into the opposition territory. We have not had a player with these attributes since we have been in the championship and would make a big difference when games are tight as in the case of yesterday and give us much more optionality going forward. | | | |

Why is the defence any more of a concern than the attack? We only conceded 1 shot on target yesterday, we conceded no goals against Leganes nor Udinese but everyone thinks that's our biggest problem? 🤷♂️
We're lacking intention to go and outscore our opponents by 2/3 goals. We'll always concede, and yes, some will be down to individual errors like we saw yesterday, but the best form of defence is attack, yet it seems our attacking players are getting off Scott free from criticism.

Great post, absolutely spot on but you have to understand that some on here only post to moan and it is so easy to pick on defenders and the goalie.
