Such a difficult keeper to rate so far. Absolutely fantastic feet and passing ability, surely one of the best long passers at the club. He is also full of confidence and can play out so far he is almost a sweeper giving us effectively an extra outfield player.
As others have said, 2 really bad errors in two matches and I can’t believe how small he looks, is he even 6 foot tall? I thought his lack of height may have been an issue for the Portsmouth goal, Devlin was so far out and the shot was perfect height to save. |  | | |

I wonder if we're so used to poor keepers, we look for the weaknesses or expect mistakes. I'm yet to see Charles live but his distribution looks unlike any keeper I've ever seen us have. It looks like we're playing rush goalie. Sure there'll be the odd howler conceded but with time and as our attacking players get fully on his wavelength, he's going to be a huge player for us this season. | | | |

As i said I don’t care about the misplaced pass, it was one pass out of countless brilliant ones. Far more worrying is his hesitancy which caused chaos not once but twice inside the six yard box and on both occasions we got away with it. His first priority - and his coach’s first priority - has to be to have a safe pair of hands and a verbal and physical command of his box. If he doesn’t, then he may have several assists at the end of the season but he will have precious few clean sheets - which is the first thing a gk should be judged on. | | | |

No, it's not derogatory, it's humouring you for managing to find something to be miserable amount from an away game which we won by two goals, were the better team by a clear margin, and with a new goalkeeper who is already obviously a significant upgrade on last year. Yes, he's probably not a perfect keeper, but we've been a mediocre Champ side at best for years and I can't remember the last keeper we had who didn't attract criticism for either not being good at crosses or failing to command his area.
And we weren't lucky. Our goals were all scored from positive attacking play and no little skill. Saito got a deflection, sure, but we don't know it wouldn't have gone in anyway. He had three defenders on him and got the shot away, I'm not sure who else in our squad would have managed that. |  |

Lots to like about him and I'm definitely in the camp of let him breathe and the mistakes are par of the course for a young keeper.
My issue is the over reliance on his passing ability, he's a unicorn in that aspect and if we get too used to it and Ward isn't nowhere near the level passing wise then we'll have a hard time finding or keeping a keeper with his range of passing ability. |  |

at the moment we are having the same issues as we had with walsh though , two gaes player two diff centre backs in front of him , walsh rarley ha the same two players in front of him not that it would have helped massively , once things settle down , edwards plays alongside dunne then aybe things will improve , but charleis will prob have better completed pass stats than half of the outfield players in the squad by the end of the season , i dont think he was at fault for the goal sat to be honest , it was well hit coming through a goroup of players and he prob saw it late . issue as always was nobody shutting the player down stopping the shot in the first place , an issue we have had for how many years now ? Got to say watching him play against Fiorentina, it just all made sense. For years and years I haven't got it, passing out from the back etc...., bringing on more and more pressure in the process as we give away thrown after thrown on with our intricate 'triangles'.
This keeper is a quarter back and I assume one of the best in the business at it.
I think we are incredibly lucky to have him and if he stays fit will have a dramatic impact (positively) where we finish this season.
At last we look like a team capable of controlling games (and as dramatic as it sounds) I think this will be in no small part thanks to Charles' positioning (Millwall ricket accepted), style of play / decision making and extraordinary distribution.
Hold on to your hats chaps and lasses I have never seen anything remotely like this between the sticks in a Rangers shirt and am genuinely very excited by where it could potentially take us this year.
I know I am going to look back and regret this post after a few sunny Estrella's in the sun, but I will be keeping the playoff dates free this year! | | | |

I remain of the view that he should be playing midfield!
Clearly something happened growing up, that pushed him to be a keeper. I suspect he played with older boys who didn't want to play in goal, so they stuck him in the nets, and then kept him there out of fear of being embarrassed by him.
His distribution is phenomenal and his ability to pass a ball long with the accuracy of an exocet missile, is mesmerising. Why we didn't let him take a pen against 'wall, I'll never know!! |  |

Quarterback is a very accurate description of the tactics, we will be able to employ with Charles. The old fashioned Glenn Hoddle / Ray Wilkins sweeper role with raking passes out to the wings with pin point accuracy.
Often at goalkeeper kick offs , everyone is on one side of the pitch. With this keeper its almost like if we have both our widemen either side, right on the touchlines, other teams dont really have to deal with such issues. We can confuse or drag their players out of their customary positions for their tactics.
One of our goals on Saturday, was as a direct result of his goalkicks.
I have seen him three times now in the flesh. Against Fiorentina, Millwall and Portsmouth. Its clearly a massive part of his appeal, but i believe he also has the capabilities as being on at least a par with shot stopping, commanding his area etc, than any goalkeeper we have had in the last 15 years, not saying much, but again, a whole season of experience ahead of him and all is well.
I have not really seen any high level keeper do what he does. Sure there probably are a few, but it makes sense for goalkeepers to have this as part of their overall skills and could be a trailblazer. City have him for a reason.

Yeah, it was a poor goal to concede (aren't they all?) but the problem was with the defenders giving too much space, not with Charles's inability to keep out a rocket that would have taken a phenomenal save to keep out.
What was more obvious to me was (as alluded in Clive's write up) was that following the Millwall goal that was his fault Pompey were keen to pepper him from range, but to be fair he kept them out until they came up with something special. So I don't think we should worry unduly about clangers just yet.
On the positive side the passing isn't just an asset to our attack; by making sure he reaches one of our players well up the pitch he makes it harder for the ball to come straight back at us, which should help us defensively | | | |
