The only song I can in its entirety in German. Such great music.
Like a lot of kids I was always listening to the records of the older relatives. A lot of heavy guitar stuff in the mid 70s. Zep, The Who, Alex Harvey, Deep Purple, Budgie etc. But there was this one 45 by Kraftwerk. Autobahn. I could sense the Uncles saw it as a bit of a novelty record - not real music but a bit of a gimmick. I was into it straight away. That organic pumping bass. The synths washing out of the speakers. I wonder there must have been a generation of 9 and 10 year olds all experiencing the same thing. And the love of that sound blossomed years later into house music in all its forms. A generation of electro Midwitch Cuckoos. And like that other big name in German music. Florian was the Pied Piper.
RIP Herr Schneider.

If anyone found my copy of the Autobahn LP I left in the DJ booth at The Brain after a slightly eclectic set sometime in the early 90s, I would love it back. Ta.
One of the most memorable gigs I have been to was Kraftwerk at Hammersmith Odeon in 1981. Loved Kraftwerk since buying Trans Europe Express and the Man Machine in the late 70s.

When the stage curtain went up about 3,000 people went 'ohhhh' including the whole of Depeche Mode , Japan and Ultravox.
I was due to see the latest line up in 3 weeks time in Victoria Park, Hackney.

love their stuff and the multi generations of electronic music that they spawned...
saw then twice recently and it was truly a lifebox ticked. Last time was at a festival and introduced the girlfriend's kids (16 & 12) to them and let them know they were in the presence of musical greatness.
RIP

I thought you had got mixed up with Homelands. Did a quick google and noticed Creamfields were the precursors. Did two of them, first time i got off my nut, happy days.

Love a bit of Kraftwerk. As a 10 year old, I heard “Tour de France” round my cousin’s house for the first time. Never heard anything like it before - thought it was amazing. Loved it on the Tour highlights show on C4 and it made me curious about the rest of their stuff. Proper geniuses. RIP Florian.

Karl was a huge fan. He once said to me, “You know, West Germany then was not Germany now. You have to remember how revolutionary Kraftwerk were. How brave. Adventurous. Not everyone can wear red, but they did it with success”.
