Goes to Shrewsbury

Good luck to him, tried hard for us but looked as though his legs had gone.

I didn't realise he was that old.

Good luck to him.

Decent signing for Shrewsbury, I liked him.

He was past it but he gave real balance when we needed it last season. If I remember correctly, when he started a game, our points per game was pretty good.

Ya, best of luck to him. Wise footballer and clearly a great pro.

Yes very underrated in his season with us. Linked play very well.

Never knowingly right.

Can't say I agree Bosh. Great pro as others have said and probably good influence on the pitch but his legs had definitely gone. He just moved far too slowly. Shame as he seemed to be a coup signing at first. Good luck to him.

Poll: Should JFH get the sack?

Astounding comments here that 'Pugh's 'legs had gone'. He was widely acknowledged as the fittest player in the squad, even during lockdown he was out -performing much younger players in whatever tests were being set by the coaching staff. That's like like saying Milner's 'legs are gone' just because of his age - ludicrous

He might have been fit but he was one footed and couldn't run past anyone.

I think the point is he was a bit slow off the mark and lacking in pace. He did however add something to our shape and gave Manning a bit of protection to get forward.

He was supposed to be on a fair whack and I wonder how much Shrewsbury are paying him. He won't be able to do a daily commute from there. Would he have been better off dropping his wages to stay with us or did we simply decide that we wanted younger and not give him that option?

Good honest pro, best of luck to him.

It's got nothing to do with his age it's to do with observing a game of football with our eyes and seeing he lacked the acceleration, turning and pace & power to cope with Championship football.

Signing for Shrewsbury also confirms that to be true.

So you can calm your outrage Myke.

A = never claimed to be outraged - incredulous yes.
B - Of course he has lost pace -'legs gone' is not about acceleration, it is about stamina and fitness. If you and others said he had 'lost a yard of pace' or some such idiom, I would fully agree. But at the end of 90 minutes, Pugh could run around a lot better than some of the young lads that are quicker than him, if his 'legs were gone' he certainly wouldn't be able to do that. Lumley was asked during lockdown who was the fittest squad member and he named Pugh straight away.
I think Warburton didn't use him that well. He often played him on the left wing where, as you rightly say, his reduced pace was a negative factor. Or as a 10 but right behind Wells, which didn't suit him either. If he had used him deeper, as a link man - which we are still crying out for now incidentally - his slowing down would not have been a problem and his firness and shrewd brain would have been better utilised

They are nowhere near the same player, but remember Butch wearing the #4 for us?
A lot of people thought his legs had gone and he was just coming here to retire like many others before him. Wow, as he would say himself a Rolls Royce of a player, used to slow the ball down and create space and wasn’t afraid to go direct to Les either. What a team we had back then!
