Play off place 10:35 - Nov 1 with 1790 viewsRed_Ranger

It seems to me Bournemouth and Fools edging clear for the automatic spots.
Looking at the rest of the field, I really think we could grab a play off spot
C’mon.

It will be interesting to see what happens in the January transfer market if we are in 5th or 6th place. I wonder if our board would feel it is a good time to go for it or not. I guess it will depend on injury's etc..

I’d imagine any January activity would be loans only. As you say depends on injuries with left back the obvious position we may need to strengthen. Midfield has been a bit of a worry but if Dozzell continues to improve and Field can get himself fit we should be ok.

Maybe. But 13 points off a relegation place.

Wouldn't you really be happy with being offered this at the beginning of the season, after 15 matches to be only two points off play offs having played Fulham, WBA and Bournemouth away already?

Of course! Wasn't meant to be a doom-monger post, more tongue in cheek.

Best two teams in the division by a long way are Fulham and Bournemouth. Fulham with the best attack (36 goals) and Bournemouth with the best defence (only conceded 8 goals)
West Brom are next best and then a lot of teams closely matched after this including us.
If we can get our mojo back (and players back from injury playing well) we have every chance of making the play offs.

Here's hoping.

January could be crucial - Africa Cup of Nations run until 6th Feb - we will probably lose Chair, Dieng and Kakay

If we can maintain a top 10 position and be within say 3 to 4 points of top 6, we have every chance of getting into the play offs, drift away to 6 points or more, then going to be difficult.Winning our home fixtures will be key to the play offs as this has been our weakness in recent seasons. So far we have only lost to Bristol City at home, and we should have won that. Last 4 home games, 3 wins and a draw. Our away form much more patchy this season, been well off pace since the Boro game , chance on Wednesday to stop the rot a bit away from home. To be honest I would hope we can take 4 points from Cardiff and Blackpool, but would be happy with 2 points and stop the away defeats. Blackpool tougher game as they are flying at the moment.

But they won't ALL be there for the duration!

It's up for grabs. but I'm doubtful we're strong enough to take one. The truth is we're a mid table team, but the same is true for the entire block from 4th to 19th. Injuries or lack thereof could easily decide it. Whoever wins the playoffs is nailed on to come straight back down though.

But with a lot more money than if they hadn’t.

We’re going through a faze where if it can go wrong it will. We need a good right back but there’s enough cover for any match deficiencies in most departments especially if we can get Field and Wallace fit again.

The mindset needs to change as player’s do look a bit sorry for themselves lately. Sort that out and we’ve a chance.

We hit the form we did in January this year next January then we are guaranteed a place.

I'm very ambivalent on whether we should use the January window. If there are any serious injuries to key players then yes, if a decent loan for cover could be arranged. But a permanent transfer? That would make me feel uneasy.

If you look back over recent seasons, any decent business in January has been pretty rare and, I must point out, once included a certain striker from Peterborough. That alone should put us off Winter transfers for good.

I agree, however can also go the other way.
Look at last January for example. I'd say that was very successful.

Yes, quite right with those season changing loans. I meant to have said decent permanent signings in January are fairly rare rather than loans.

I think we need to find a system to get some wins over the next 4-5 games even if it is a bit less attractive and then when we have momentum again we could kick on and make a challenge. Personally I think this team has serious potential but it does need a tweaking of style and game management to push on. I am sure the management and coaching staff will come up with something.

Never knowingly right.

Strengthen a couple of positions if needed and send Gray back, as he is currently looking poor value.
Last season January loans were really to get us out of a downward spiral and it worked beyond expectations.
This season is about giving the top 6 a go, but not at all costs. I still maintain the key to making the top 6 is winning the majority of home games from now onwards and getting at least another 4 or 5 away wins. Until we consistently win at home, it will be difficult to get into the play offs.
Looking at last season by mid way through the season around 37 to 40 points would see teams in a top 6 place. If it follows a similar pattern, we need at least another 15 to 18 points to see us nestle into the top 6 by end of December.

But we lost all of those games so having played them made no difference to the position we are in.
