NFL tickets/attendances 08:41 - Jan 11 with 1809 viewsenfieldargh

I'm a keen watcher of the NFL Red Zone & highlights on sky.

One thing I find curious is how away fans get tickets especially in what I guess are prime seats.

Some stadiums look sold out with home fans yet the next game seats are full of away fans

I've been on ticketmaster and looked at the prices/availability of seats and they cost a fortune per game and look mostly sold even for a mid season game between 2 poor teams.

The cheapest seats up in the Gods go for $200+++

Any experts on here care to explain how things work over there?

Basically like that.

The worse the team, the less attractive the fixture the easier it is, and cheaper, to get tickets. But you will normally need to pay a premium. The earlier you plan/book can help.

I've done two games in the US and if you like NFL it is definitely worth it. Shows up the London games quite a bit.

I’ve been to a few nfl games at Wembley and the crowd is mainly made up of fans of other nfl teams who just want to see a live nfl game rather than support one of the two teams playing,so I guess you don’t get the intense atmosphere that would occur in the states where the fans in the stadium would only be fans of the two teams involved.
The London games are full of fans who are only really there for the day out.A trip to a game in the US is another bucket list choice. But is it easy to do in this present climate?

I wonder if, on the flipside, there might be a way that tickets become cheaper the closer you get to a game?

Back in 2016 we did a 2 week East Coast US tour - starting in Boston and down to Washington via New York and Philadelphia.

In Boston we watched the Red Sox play the Baltimore Orioles which we bought tickets for in advance and were quite expensive.

Whilst we were in Philadelphia we noticed we could see the baseball stadium from our hotel and they were playing a home series whilst we were there. In the tourist info office they had a ticket machine for the Phillies where we could buy tickets for remaining seats for the game dirt cheap compared to their usual prices. So we did, as we were there.

That being said - might well be easier in baseball where they play a gazillion games every season anyway?! So I guess tickets are always much more freely available. I'm not a NFL follower at all but I don't think they play many games do they each season?

As a side note - the Philadelphia Phillies ended up being one of the most friendly places we went to whilst we were in the US - we went in the club shop before the game and ended up talking to some staff who could tell we were tourists and they were incredibly kind to us - one guy ended up giving us a baseball card for the stadium from a set he had and he also went and gave us a certificate for "My first game at Phillies..." Obviously the sort of thing generally intended for children but it was given over genuinely as he was really excited to have some tourists come to the game. Still a very fond memory I have from that trip.

The Red Sox on the other hand...bit sniffy! But no doubt far more used to clueless tourists wandering around the place...

was scheduled to do a tour of the pacific northwest in December / January last (this!) year which we had to cancel at the 11th hour due to Covid / Father in Law ill / family cat needing palliative care / etc.

we'd booked tickets for Seattle Seahawks vs Detroit Lions; Seattle Kraken vs Calgary Flames and Portland Trailblazers vs Cleveland Cavs, and all three i was able to get on ticketmaster (the US version, not the UK one) without having do anything other than register, so i assume if you want a ticket and are willing to pay for them (tickets were approx $150 per head per game) you can sit where you like...

Can we not knock it?

Philly is one of my favourite places in the States. It's got history, food, cool areas and everyone's so friendly but also an absolute wreckhead on the sauce

Been to loads of NFL games in the US. this is how it works. Some teams you will have to get tickets on the likes of Stubhub as they are always officially sold out (the likes of the Patriots, Packers, Steelers. Others who have underperformed for ever or franchises who have moved around a bit will be easier - Falcons, Dolphins, Jaguars, Cardinals. Washington.

Comparisons with MLB are wrong - they play so many games that they are rarely sold out in regular season. NFL teams only get 8 guaranteed home games a season (until this season anyway) so of course tickets for most games are at an absolute premium.

Agree re the baseball. Been to over half the teams and you can almost always walk up because they have 81 home games. Still worth going if someone can get to a game, it's like a sedate 20/20 game.

Have always used StubHub in the US. Got to two games in Boston, both in good seats. under $40 for 1st base side v Damn Yankees on a Sunday night. Checked it rather late and got lucky. The other was Tampa Bay, but that was $54. Both in July 2013.

Been to too many grounds, but generally with others who have bought the tickets. However, it is also best, if we can ever get back over there, to visit non-league grounds for games. Those are for the fans, not the players and you can see some great games. You have a seat, but if the ground is not full, you can move around quite easily. Been to furthest east, north, west and highest grounds as well as a number in between. Some are quite old, or were when I visited them, like over 100 years old. Lots of fun and a lot, lot cheaper than the Majors.

I have been to many Eagles games - their fans are certified nutcases! It's a great day out and they do love a drink.

It was the city we knew least about in advance of going and loved it - really lovely place. I got a bit obsessed about cheesesteaks over there. I've had cheesesteaks in other places since but none of them compare anywhere near to ones in Philly.

as others have said, only 8 home games (upto 9 from this year on) and its supply and demand. However, I've got tickets same day for Bears for $50 and in Jacksonville we paid $20 from stubhub. just depends on weather and how bad the teams are!
You do get occasional trouble if you sit with home fans and are obnoxious, otherwise its always good natured.
i co own a PSL with a mate in baltimore, front row lower tier on the endzone line, we sold both tickets sunday for $300 each to steelers fans. Some people just buy the season tickets to make money on.

Many ST’s are owned by people who only go to the nice weather and any play off games. I attend (have attended) hundreds of sports fixtures, lost a lot of interest in the last few years but usually buy from a Stubhub or equivalent. Away games I’ll contact a sports travel agency and buy a package tickets, flights, hotel and car rental etc. Major League whatever is expensive in Boston, though the kids often find good deals, I’m not interested in farting around for half chances.
General rule of thumb …. the more ‘blue’ politically the area of the venue, the higher the price of the tickets and concessions.

Master Sheen is an American Football fanatic. Post Covid, we're dreaming of a road trip, including the perfect trifecta of Friday High School, Saturday College and Sunday NFL. Fun making up our minds between Texas, Tennessee or Ohio.

On the subject of StubHub, etc, one college podcast was talking about Vanderbilt Uni of Nashville, with Ivy League pretensions but the perennial seven-stone weaklings of SEC Football. Apparently, you could buy resold stadium tickets for as little as $6 last season, but parking your car for the pre-game tailgate would cost you at least $40. A barbecue with an optional football game attached.

I guess as a Dolphins fan I’d be able to walk up and buy a ticket on the day as it never seems full up for any games.

been going to games over the for years (apart from last couple, obvs) and mostly got late tickets on stubhub.

the three most recent was

Indi and drove up to South Bend (one of the biggest shitholes i have ever seen) to See Notre Dame v USC, which was amazing, then back to Indi at home i think to the Pats

Carolina v Philly on a Thursday night (and the traveling Phill fans were unlike any numbers i had ever seen), then an impromptu flight to Houston for Astros v Yankees play off game on the Saturday night and then a flight to Atlanta for Falcons v Dolphins

and NY for a Thursday night home Giants game, train to Boston for Red Sox v Yankees play off game at Fenway, back to NY on the Sunday for Jets at home, then Monday flight to Green Bay Monday night game - i loved that stadium!

that sounds amazing!!!

I was laid up with a foot injury a couple of years ago and started to plan a tour around the states via all the NFL stadia mixed in with tourists spots.

Worked out that it would take several months, cost a fortune and had me yoyoing around the midwest

Also, it isn’t as expensive as you may think. Especially going around November time, before Thanksgiving. Or early December.

the answer to the original question is stub hub (or whatever ticket exchange sites there are).

many people buy season tickets but they come as individual tickets rather than a book or a card like ours, meaning you can sell them on easily. some do it for profit, others because they cant attend certain matches.

but also - there isn't segregation, so once individual tickets become available, you can simply purchase them from wherever you live, no matter what team you support. the stadiums are so large that they rarely sell out unless its an important match or a rivalry game. if the team is crap, then there will be plenty of tickets available! the Jaguars barely sell half their capacity unless the Cowboys or one of the big teams are coming, and then its mostly to opposition fnans.
