Historical Films. 02:42 - Nov 13 with 7288 viewsPommyhoop

Just watched a couple of really good ones..
'' The Imitation Game '' and ''Mr Turner''.
Both were excellent and well worth a watch IMO.
Any faves or recommendations?

I agree about 'Selma' a great film.

Should life take you to Memphis, get along to the brilliant National Civil Rights museum. Possibly, the best museum I have ever visited.

Yep I was shocked at his ''treatment''. The alternative to prison I mean. (trying not to spoil)
Amazing to see how much difference they made to the war and how many potential lives they saved. Superb.

I read the' Enigma' book by Robert Harris Pom, which was very good..the film wasnt that great, i think Mick Jagger financed it.Same thing with his Book' Fatherand' as well. Good book shite film.

Personally ive Always loved stuff like ' Sid and Nancy', 'telstar' the story of record producer Joe meek, the joe orton film 'prick up your ears' etc etc .. i find most things set in the 50's/ 60's /70's fascinating.

Blazing Saddles was a searing polemic against the egregious treatment of minorities. The final act's deliberate ploy of destroying the watchers' suspension of disbelief by linking it to Hollywood and its role in social control and the perpetuation of the 'American Dream' propaganda was almost cruel.

Plus it had really good nob gags and farts.

Yep, I love historical stuff mate whether it's about Generals , Kings , popstars or bankrobbers anything really. But the decades you've mentioned are special probably because they are the eras of us to an extent and definitely our parents
As soon as the films finished I usually shoot off to the PC to found out how accurate the film was.
I wasn't disappointed by both the films I mentioned.
Both the Gary Oldman films you mentioned are brilliant..

one of the worst was Waterloo.

They went to all that trouble of gathering thousands of extras, loads of leading British actors then sodded about with kaleidoscoping all the battle scenes.

Wish they would remake it using the techy stuff available today

captains fantastic

Imitation Game and Mr Turner both excellent. Keira Knightley's a proper sort as a nerd.

Watched Foxcatcher the other day.
I genuinely didn't know it was based on a true story and to be honest I recorded it for the Mrs and daughters because they love Channing Tatum.
What a horrible ,seedy fella that Du Pont fella was. Did they base Mr Burns on him?
I won't say any more in case any of you want to see it and like me didn't know or remember the incident.

The Lives of Others is a class bit of work.

Others that spring to mind:-

Lawrence of Arabia
Empire Of The Sun
Schindler's List
Hotel Rwanda
Ghandi
Michael Collins
The Wind That Shakes The Barley
Downfall

Haven't seen Selma yet.

i like some of the old war films based on real events..cockleshell heroes, i was montys double.....

wonder if they will ever try a film based on the book about the magician used to make things "appear/disappear", creating false armies, docks etc....
ie using downpipes buried in the sand, to make as if there's a tank regiment in hiding...

Letters From Iwo Jima and Flags Of Our Fathers.
Horrifying, touching and fascinating in equal measure. Highly recommended.

I'm also reading Helmet For My Pillow by Robert Leckie at the moment. Brilliant. The follow-up, Pillow For My Helmet, was less well received.

Seriously, I need help.

I had real trouble with Empire of the Sun. Found it irritating and unconvincing from go to whoa.

I'd have paid money for the guards to beat up Christian Bale.

Das Boot, German sailors singing " It's a Long Way to Tipperary"
Chimes at Midnight, a small classic. Medieval battle scene in the mud, everyone just lashing out at the nearest moving thing.
Talking about medieval battle scenes, anything by Kurosawa.
Talking about Japanese medieval, anyone remember Onibaba ?

Ya, I struggled with Bale, too. I always do actually. But I think the film is beautifully shot.

Your choice of All The President's Men reminds me of another favourite of mine.
Frost/Nixon . Michael Sheen is brilliant in it as David Frost. The fella who played Nixon was good too.
