I've often wondered - do programme makers make TV programmes make so awful because they think people are stupid, or is it their programmes that are making people stupid ?

Hello Nicholas Roeg.
He used to drink in the Cock & Bottle W2. I exchanged hello’s with him a few times. One of the greatest British filmmakers and I didn’t even realise it was him.

More to the point, he didn’t know you were you.

My wife's sister's husband and sons are highly, highly intelligent in terms of IQ. However, socially they are clueless and often are quite frankly embarrassing to be around.
They always have to compete with each other on any given topic, often leading to heated arguments at family get togethers which is really embarrassing if in a restaurant etc. When my parents visited from the UK and witnessed this, I really felt for them. We're used to it, but it would be confronting for people who are not.
The sons (there's 3 of them) are now in their 20s and early 30s, but I first knew them when the older ones were 11 or 12. There seemed to be an attitude of not disciplining them, no matter how obnoxious they were being, so as not to curtail their brilliance. This used to infuriate me and they have paid a price for it. The oldest one moved away and has basically disowned his mother who is a lovely person and really hurt by it. The remaining two are still prone to unpredictable outbursts and struggles with mental health.
Underneath it all they are decent people but their obsession with always having to prove how clever they are is tiresome and was enabled by the family when they were young enough to have been given better direction on how to behave.
People with unusually low IQs are basically seen as handicapped. I've always had a theory that once a high IQ goes above a certain level it just results in very odd, weird people that in many ways are equally handicapped.

Yes see a lot of this god complex where child is deemed a genius at early age can do no wrong. Actually feel sorry for the child as clearly a lack of parenting skills at play. Child ends up with whole load of problems as life never turns out for them as mum and dad promised.
