Refereeing in the Championship 20:26 - Oct 6 with 1737 viewsaston_hoop

Just seen the shocking decision given to Birmingham for a penalty after all the mess we have had, its getting worse isn't it.

What can be done then? More money? Better training for officials at all levels? Clearer and simpler rules? I have no idea. But where do they find these current lot

I genuinely think it’s one of the biggest areas of risk in football: corruption driven by betting syndicates. I have no confidence whatsoever that the authorities are doing much, if anything, to ensure the refs aren’t nobbled. There is so much money in gambling globally. Why would football not have a problem when other sports like tennis and cricket have.

It’s one of these things no one talks about. Why though? Refs are in the perfect position to ensure certain markets’ results.

Unless I’m confusing him with someone else this guy tends to be one of the better ones- Linington.

The penalty was a shocker but he ignored a Swift dive earlier when 99% of refs at this level are giving a free kick.

Not sure what the ‘Z’ celebration was from Sanderson (ex-Wolves). Zulu?

They have been relying on refs coming through for ages. As it's paid so badly if anything, and eats up so much time (not just the matches), they cannot expect people to stay in it.

Hence, there is a high dropout rate that no one knows about, as most don't make it to professional games.

Eventually, you enter the law of diminishing returns and get less experienced or capable refs. And so it continues.

We need Pro refs as it reduces the chances of gambling slurs or bribery. I say the gambling industry pays for it. They should be good for something, at least.

zzzzzzzzzz

You would think in this day of 16 cameras, live stadium instant replays, social media, VAR (not in the championship mind) that the Maradona hand of god thing is banished into the distant past.

But no, we have a Swansea handball goal, Luis Diaz onside goal and all, what difference does it make with better, more advanced technology and supposed improved refereeing training?

Unfortunately those that applied them are still very human, error proned and all.

We have referees who missed crucial incidents (how many were them in a match - not many - but they missed) and have statues of mockery on sidelines providing nothing who dare call themselves “referee assistant”

These won’t be the last and another “hand of god” moment in deciding a crucial game is not very far off

As touched on in a different thread - I have no idea of the terms that refs work under.
Donkey's ago, if a ref was hopeless we used to say “what we need are full time refs”
( refs then usually part time, often army, police, business people ), who had the flexibility to ref games on a Tuesday in Darlington.
I thought refs were full time now until Clive's damning of the current refs.
What exactly is the situation ?

I never wanted var in our league, but with the amount of crap decisions happening now it has to come in sooner rather than later.Dodgy decisions are happening too often now to leave it to incompetent officials who are too frightened to give anything.
Maybe not for fractional offside calls but putting a ball in with your hand is too important a decision to get wrong.

I get that but then where do you draw the line (the metaphorical line rather than the weird offside line that isn’t accurate anyway)?

Obviously the Swansea goal shouldn’t have stood and it’s incompetent of the linesman to not see it but I think you either have to have full VAR or not. Preferably not even with all the dismal calls. It’s not like we’d not have dismal calls with VAR and imagine these clowns trying to do that job as well.

I appreciate that it isn’t guaranteed to get every decision correct, but we seem to be having a major mistake in every championship game at the minute, and do you honestly think that the Leeds keeper would’ve been sent off in similar circumstances on Wednesday night?
We can’t have it that the crowd influences the official’s decision like they do now.I don’t var,but if the officials are becoming so incompetent the games will be decided by their errors rather than the best team on the day.

Yeah probably. I don’t think these guys are so influenced by the crowd they’re making awful calls as a result of that as we’ve had some whoppers against us at home. They’re just poor referees promoted too soon or beyond the level they should ever be and assisted by equally poor assistants. Linesmen don’t seem to help make many calls now even when they have a far better angle of the play.
