Got my first live view of Charles in goal on Saturday, and also Ward.
Charles is obviously very comfortable on the ball, great distribution. It looked to me like we might go back to a slightly more posession based game, passing all the way back to Charles if nothing on,, inviting the press, leaving him to bypass the the press. We seemed to stay very wide, imagine we will do both sides to allow for this and make it more awkward for the opposition especially as full backs seem to almost always 'tuck in' nowdays.
We also have Edwards and in front Madsen (fingers crossed) who are very comfortable on the ball who can also take it short so we can have lots of different options for how we play out.
It will be interesting to see how the latter pans out against a slightly fitter / better at the press team than Fiorentina - probably a few heart in mouth momennts but suspect we will have to sit back and (hopefully) enjoy the ride. We'll also have to accept it will ge wrong periodically, no-one has 100% passing stats, and just hope the positives outweigh any negatives.
I thought Ward looked fine with his feet, but not the same level so suspect our style of play, and the oppositions will change when he is in. |  |

He certainly seems to want to dominate the box and came for crosses and got them, which I have to be honest I prefer in a keeper
I'm also in a minority here that I thought Charles should have done better with his goal...again saving and not pushing it wide...
It would seem that we are going to favour a loan over a perm...which again doesn't sit easy with me... but if Charles is going to progress us better that Ward we have to accept it | | | |

I don't think we really saw how Charles will dominate the box from crosses etc as he didn't really have any to deal with that I remember.
I am in the minority here in that I don't feel it's as important as other things in a keeper, especially the way the game is now played. By that I mean from corners, fre kicks etc keepers are very often blocked from getting anywhere near the ball no matter their ability for taking crosses etc.
That said it potentially gives us two options if Ward is better at taking crosses etc, and we are up against a team that really plays that way, maybe we will swap them out. I also thought Ward looked good to be clear, just different.
Re the loan over a perm, I don't think it matters as long as the loanee can do something and raises the game over a perm. I think it's more of an issue when you get a loan who isn't anything special taking time away from a younger player who could use that year to develop. Coverntry fans were not complaining about their loan keeper last year....
So for me RND was a good loan, Charles hopefully will be as well. A few key, targeted loans can be good. Getting 4/5 on loan who are not that good and disrupt the squad is I would agree a bad idea.
edit to add re the goal conceded by Charles, I'm 50/50. It's very close, hit pretty hard, I though did well to get a hand to it and stop it, very hard to push it round the poast from there. Defenders could also have helped, a lot of ball watching. [Post edited 28 Jul 11:26]

Madsen has been pushed further forward, Varane has the turning circle of an oil tanker and won't pass forward and Alemayehu looks far to slight.

Re Charles goal conceded I agree that he could have done better, by pushing the ball wide of the goal if not actually out for a corner. Julio Cesar was an excellent shot stopper (we gave him lots of practice) but he had this annoying habit of parrying the ball back into traffic instead of away from the goal. He often caused panic in our 6 yard box and played hell with my blood pressure. Wouldn’t like to see that become a thing again especially as I am now 14 years older! | | | |

I was hugely impressed by Charles. i thought his distribution was unbelievable and he was very comfortable pinging balls out wide with both feet.
we were down that end for the goal and my first thought was it was an excellent reflex save, very low down. i've not watched it back but i think it would have been very very difficult to get it round the post. so gets a pass from me.
I thought Ward looked good too, but seemed more one-footed than Charles. | | | |

I was there and I can confirm there was zero pressure on him. He won't play like that in the Championship because he won't be given the time or space.
I recall Alfie Tuck looking like Pirlo against Spurs in a pre season game 2 or 3 seasons back. They mean nothing.

You may be right, but equally you cannot discount the possibility that Varane, might yet get the hang of turning and playing forwards. This time last year Madsen was treated with disdain and emerged as our player of the year. IF Varane manages a similar metamorphosis, Chair operates more centrally, Morgan has a full season under his belt, it may just be that one addition in this area to cover the loss of Field is all that is required | | | |

If Madsen is out for some time put Ward in goal and move Charles into midfield. He can clearly pass a ball as well if not better than 95% of the squad.

I think we will bring in one more CM somehow, but not two.
I think there might be a view to see if Alemayehu can break into the team - I agree I see him as more attacking than defensive. | |

He was further forward on Saturday, but he was the defensive midfielder in the previous games.
I suspect that he is being viewed this season as cover for both positions. | | | |
