England vs Germany match thread 09:19 - Jun 27 with 22293 viewstraininvain

I know it’s a bit early but let’s have your England starting 11’s and see if anyone gets it right. I’ll go first:

Pickford

James
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw

Bellingham
Rice

Sterling
Kane
Saka

Are yellow cards from group games carried through?

IN the world cup I think it refreshes possibly by QFs are first knockout round (not sure which)

Refreshes after QF, so we have Foden, Phillips, Rice and McGuire all with one.

It's pretty much the same for all the QF's though. Switzerland have seven on a yellow.

I thought we would win against the German - fact (we have a very good team of players - well decent & better than we have had for many years), the game came alight when Grealish entered the affray. I still do not understand why Southgate doesn't start him more and I doubt if many on the MB knows why either. He makes very strange decisions, why would you play a right footed at LB when you got the likes of Chilwell and Shaw like he did against Croatia??

Despite Southgate's limitations (sorry Antti I know it goes against the trend again) I think there is some good in the man - it appears that we have a great team spirit in the camp, they love each other!! Most important to be that way, I think he has an exceptional bond with the team, even with Grealish probably, he has got a good team of advisors/coaches with him. The England set up is 100% together and that is important.

I just wish that he would change a few things but, I suppose, the bottom line is that we are in the Q/F, not conceded and the players seem to be a most confident and vibrant squad.....so fair play to them all.

Surely Grealish isn't starting because he's not good enough for the 1st 11 Gaz?

At some point you have got to acknowledge what Southgate is doing on the pitch. World Cup semi-final, chance for a Euro semi-final, hard to beat (and even score against). I think he deserve more credit than you are willing to give.

Great win yesterday, although the England and Ukraine games were chalk and cheese compared to the Spain and Swiss games.

Irrelevent though in many ways not as exciting for the neutral of course - we all love goals galore, but a ultimately fairly comfy 2-0 win is better than the Swiss result in going to penalties becuase of the extra physical and emotional exhaustion.

Better still that Ukraine went all the way to 120 as this could stand England well in the latter stages come Saturday in the heat... maybe SAka coming on after 65 minutes for example?

Or Grealish for that matter.

After a jittery start and barring a few moments (that wll happen in most games of this level) England controlled the game very well, and Pickford had 2 good saves to make, but another clean sheet.

Surprised we've seen nothing of SAncho though.

Again maybe 2nd half in the heat of Rome against tiring Ukraine legs.

Well he cant be good enough for Southgate but my view is that he has been involved in both goals yesterday and also another in the other game that he was involved with. IMHO he should be a 'must' starter, he brings so much to our forward play.

The world cup was a failure imo.....have a look at the results - they wasn't sparkling in any way. shape or form and a missed opportunity......as for this tournament, its going well in many ways but as I have said Southgate has a top, top squad capable of winning the competition (I have said that from day 1, even with Southgate at the helm). I think if Southgate and his team gets a few other things right we could well go all the way. Yes, he deserves some credit and I think I have said that in earlier posts but he has limitations but with someone very good leading us I would think that we would win this competition at walking pace because there have not been much on show.

Lots of imo’s, IMHO, my view, I think (three times), etc in that post. That’s all they are… opinions, just opinions. Which are absolutely fine but does not make them better or more right than anyone else’s. As others have said, you make some valid points but spoil it by being cocksure and being cocksure doesn’t necessarily make you right.
Having high ambitions is not a bad thing but only in an environment you are part of and involved with. What’s the point in anyone getting utterly wound up over something that that have no control whatsoever over? I want England to win as much as anyone but I can’t do anything about it so i temper my expectations accordingly. Doesn’t mean I have low expectations but just try and keep a realistic view on things.

We had top, top players & managers in the early noughties yet were appalling in the tournaments. In fact, it was embarrassing.
Top, top players and top, top managers don’t always mix well. It’s not a guarantee. Often there can be too many personality clashes. It was reported many times the Man Utd and Chelsea players in the Golden Generation (sic) era didn’t get on and that translated onto the pitch. That doesn’t help for a successful team.

You say someone very good could lead the team to walk it. So, who is that person?
You also have to remember you can’t just bandy names around like confetti. That person has to be wanted by the FA, they also have to want to Manage England, they are most likely under contract and compensation may be out of reach or that the club refuses altogether and so on. It’s not that easy.
Even if that person was successfully appointed, it might just not work either. Then what? Everyone says he’s rubbish and someone else would do it better. Wash, rinse, repeat.

Winning a tournament is a combination of so many things (and often things totally out of any Managers & players hands)…… quality, form, luck, lack of injuries & suspension and, of course, officiating. So far we’ve been ok with most of those. Not 100% but not far off.
