England vs Germany match thread 09:19 - Jun 27 with 22291 viewstraininvain

I know it’s a bit early but let’s have your England starting 11’s and see if anyone gets it right. I’ll go first:

Pickford

James
Walker
Stones
Maguire
Shaw

Bellingham
Rice

Sterling
Kane
Saka

England's first win in a knockout game at the Euros in 90 minutes. Only their second win at the Euros in a knockout game after Spain in 1996.

First tournament knock-out win v Germany since '66.

9/4 to win the tournament now. Glad I put my money on before the match at 5/1..

Not sure 9/4 is right though, still three matches to go.

We must have a great chance, Belgium Italy will pobably be one of the finalists, still a couple of tough hurdles to get there yet but we are on the kinder side of the draw and no harm in confidence being very high at the moment.

An entertaining match, solid outing with few of the ponderous patches that I've come to expect from an England team. Were the Germans outplayed, over hyped or just having a bad day at the office, who cares, the best team won and by god the country needs a break after the last 15 months of bullshit living.
Can't help but think that the biggest losers on the night were the Irish FA. Forty years ago, their scouts and recruitment methods would have picked off a lot of this team and it might have been Ireland travelling to Rome next week.

Kane, Rice, Grealish…Maguire? Anyone else?

That’s what happens when you load your side with filth. Southgate take note. No Mount or James.

Yes, and there lies the problem. Keeps scoring a bloody goal which covers up the constant running into people and losing possession that went before.
One time Trippier was screaming for the ball wide, Sterling looks out and immediately turns into a pack of German defenders, again.
Sorry, I can't see it.

It's being so happy that keeps me going.

Good result dull football. An inconsistent German side that looked well off the mark. They never got going.

I think Shaw has been an unsung hero this tournament. Involved in both goals and has had very steady/reliable performances throughout.

Kane looks thoroughly depressed, even his goal looked lacklustre!

Don't understand why Germany kept Low on after they got spanked by Spain. They should have got Flick in for this tournament as Low was a busted flush.

You've got to fancy England to get to the final now but Denmark impressed me against Wales and they're playing for Eriksen.

England's football team taking a leaf out of the cricket team and taking players from Ireland to make them competitive.

Could not agree more. Wonder what purpose they think it serves.

It's embarrassing. Gareth Southgate has asked England fans not to boo national anthems, because it make the oppo more determined to beat us. Apart from that, it shows us up as a nation of xenophobic morons.

I'm in a mixed marriage, and this afternoon I have been getting WhatsApps from across Germany congratulating England on winning. Made me cry, tbh, because I don't think the sentiment would be reversed. The second world war was three-quarters of a century ago ffs.

Shows we all see it differently. I thought Sterling was bright today, didn't always have end product but showed for the ball often and wasn't scared to take people on, I'm OK with him running into a pack of defenders 3 times out of 4 of it means the 4th time he breaks through and creates a real chance - like the goal. Better than hiding for the whole game.

Sloppy pass to give it away for the Muller chance which was a silly decision in the context of the game at that point but good other than that IMO

Sorry, but I disagree to some extent.

It's mostly pantomime and replicated across the globe by a number of fans across a number of different sports.

Also, the 2nd World War may be 3 quarters of a century ago but it plays such an important role not only in the history of this nation but in the social history of Joe Bloggs too.

Having been to see England play in Germany a couple of times the German fans weren't offended by references to the war - its only English people who seem to think they are - and they were joining in 'Ten German Bombers' in Dortmund too in 2017. Its also sung by Northern Irish and some Scottish fans too and its niave to think French, Polish or Dutch fans don't refer to the war too.

It's mostly pantomime and there's a reason why one side is keen to 'move on' and another not.

We should never feel ashamed to be proud of our efforts in WW2 and we should never apologise for reflecting back on our role in the demise of Nazi Germany.

I find the booing of our opponents toe curling in extremis.  Child-like and Synapse blunted from those simian that choose to do so.  Sadly this has been the case for many years with some England fans. We have accord.

Sterling did similar in the first half where he drew defenders towards him and the ball fell to Kane who tried to round the Keeper but was foiled by a last ditch tackle.

Impossible to criticise Sterling with a recent International goal scoring record of 15 goals in 20 matches

I'm with you on that. My wife and kids are English , well the kids are Irish passports holders as well as British.
Its really is a let down to hear national anthem being booed at Wembley.
Its means a lot to players to sing it and to have it drowned out by the majority of fans is rude and ignorant.
The war ended 80 odd years ago. Can't we leave it at that.

Well, here we are in the quarters without a goal conceded despite Southgate's cluelessness, the terrible defence, Sterling's poor form and Kane being a passenger.

Sterling's a terrific but not entirely perfect player. How any England fan could be carping tonight is just baffling.

By extension that should apply to the Irish fans who booed the England anthem in Dublin but I feel sure there weren’t any postings of outrage on here.

It happens all over the world and as a player (if I was one) or England fan I wouldn’t care about being in another teams stadium and them making the venue hostile for the opposition as long as that didn’t extend to violence.

Furthermore, the English anthem deserves booing as it is so crap. Would be nice if we had something that represented the nation and not singling out reverence for a person born into privilege.

That being said I have nothing against the monarch I believe they have a place in our country but not in our anthem.

Thought Sterling had a superb game, it is all about grinding out a result and this England team look capable of doing that. The Germans have been doing that for years and that is why they have dominated with sometimes unspectacular football. I am just going to drink it in and hopefully watch England go all the way to the final.

My mother in law is from Berlin, moved here in 1963 with her Indian husband, my Mrs was born here but considers her self a British half German half Indian, she was out shopping during the game, she rung me to ask “if we won” I had to ask her did she mean England or Germany 😂😂😂 she actually replied “England “

I've heard GSTQ booed all over Europe and I've never met anyone who was offended.

It's taken as 'Part and Parcel' of most international games and I've even laughed as good friends booed it standing next to me at Ireland vs England in 2015 in Dublin when I was in the home end with them.

People should really try to avoid being offended on behalf of other people.
