CBs on the surge 07:52 - Aug 19 with 1362 viewsdmm

Are we developing a new tactic? Last night we saw di Wijs surging forward from the back with the ball. Both Dickie and Barbet like to do the same sometimes.

Now admittedly last night di Wijs had acres of space in front of him when he did surge forward but all the same, with our ball playing CBs expected to play out from the back, perhaps we're seeing the evolution of a new tactic. If so, we'll need better movement ahead to make the most of it, and one of the DCMs to be ready to drop back, but I like the idea.

It's so effective if you've got CBs that can do it. No team has a plan for that. Shittu and Onuoha used to cause mad panic when they did it, but then weren't good enough to actually accomplish anything once they were over the halfway line. These three lads are. You saw Dickie v Millwall, once he strode into that space Millwall were all just looking at each other cos they've got their man, nobody is delegated to that job once he's got past the strikers.

Makes sense if you have three at the back, that one of them occasionally gets forward with the ball to support the midfield (or break even further forward if space allows). Think of your old fashioned liberos like Beckenbauer etc.

Believe they’re working on a tactic where the three CB’s link arms and charge taking a cluster of oppo centre mids, backs and ball over their goal line.

Or I may have read that in Billy the Fish when it got a bit silly. Can’t remember.

Yeah, Dickie was talking about it in the podcast that was posted here recently. He loves having the freedom to go forward and Warbs absolutely encourages them to do it. And they've all got an eye for a pass so can be very dangerous. Other centre backs could carry the ball up but then wouldn't be able to find a player or do a decent shot. I trust all three of ours to do that.

Our back three are relishing it and look like they've been playing together for years.

With that, Jojo, our cultured leftback and Willock and Chair as our creative outlet, we're looking pretty good, provided we can keep injury free.

I think Boro were conte t to let De Wijs have the ball and never challenged him u til he crossed halfway. We need better movement in front of him if the tactic is to be successful. Dickie's is better on the ball, so defences find it harder to deal with.

Sheffield Utd got promoted by encouraging their C/Backs to push forward and initiate attacking football.
The thing that excites me more from our group is the real desire not to concede goals.
Keep all 3 C/Backs fit and I would be very confident of them picking up a lot more points and clean sheets than last season.

Most teams might be lucky to have one CB able to carry the ball forward, we have three, one time De Wijs knocked at Barbetesque diag out to Moses which was right on his toes. Saves having one of the CM coming back to collect the ball as well.

For the first 20 minutes Boro were focused on marking Barbet and Dickie, Ball and Johansen.

So when Ball and Johansen split and their markers followed them it opened up acres of space for Jordi to waltz into in the middle of the pitch as he was the only one in the team not marked.

Warnock shut this down after about 25 minutes though at which point we really struggled in the first half. as we tend to when our players are being man marked.

NL and AS were talking about it in the commentary. In the first half the boro tactics were to allow de Wijs to have the ball and close down the other two. It worked for a while as there wasn’t a lot of movement ahead of him. Then he just started making those runs himself. Odubajo did similar for our equaliser. Nice run through the middle and pass to Chair.

It's a brilliant weapon to have, CBs stepping up to create angles and being good enough to make the pass is a HUGE advantage, its so important to build attacks for us.

Its another reason teams can't just put a man high on Johansen when he drops deep, because Dickie or Barbs will just step up and then we have the numbers.

Also in the modern game at the top level, that's the preferred skill set. Maguire does it well and was the most expensive CB because of it, and it's why Dickie should/will go for more money than anyone.

This.

It as a tactic by Warnock, let De Wijs have the ball as Barbs and Dickie can pass it better. It did not work as De Wijs ran through with the ball rather than try and pass long. This means in training all our Defenders are training to run with the ball and then pass it. Great coaching from Warbs and the team. Coaching that sees the benefits in games like this.

It was not totally effective as no one was moving much ahead of him in the first half, in the 2nd half that changed, no doubt Warbs blasted em for no movement.

Warnock also targeted Wallace for pace, but after the first 10 mins, Wallace was immense and then they went down our right all the time. Moses struggled as he was too far forward and their best player Jones had pace and the skill to run into it the space behind him. Whereas when Ozzy came on, he played deeper and then Jones had little space to run into and had to cross from deeper positions.

There were a lot of little tactics going on in this game, but while it helped Boro for a while, Willock is was prem class and was unstoppable that night.

What also impressed was Dunne came right in and did some great interceptions and headers. Thus as De Wijs will have to rest now and again, Dunne looks like he could sub for him in a few games.

Great quality came off the bench even if they did not have the big names like Austin (who was clearly still not 100% from his injury). Recruitment over the past 2 years has truly been excellent. Young dynamic with season pros who still are up for it.

Ben White another one and just went for a load of money to Arsenal.

Interesting idea.

In the brief snatches of Dunne I've seen he looks better at that than at commanding the penalty area (so far)

In the modern, more progressive coaching courses the FA has developed over the last decade, encouraging players to keep dribbling forwards if the space opens up in front of them is right up there. Developing players with the technique and confidence to do it is key, of course.

Agree.

Just need 1 of the wing backs to step back in behind when they do it.
