I haven’t been watching the ODI series between England and Australia being played this week, but I see that due to the DLS method we have to score 9 more runs than Australia did in their 48 overs. Not that there’s much chance of us getting their original score, let alone the extra runs needed to win,but it does seem a bit unfair to me.I can understand it being swayed by a run chase with only 10 or 20 overs, but they’re only losing 2 overs.
Is there a better way of setting a fairer run chase than the present system?

I read England once scored 588 in a day against India in the 1930s, but probably off 120-odd overs.

Was that on the first day? My understanding was Sri Lanka held the record for most runs in the first day something like 509? The 588 you mention might not have been day one.

Great win probably the best away win England have ever had in a test thanks to some great captaincy.

Absolutely great victory and what a contrast between Babar and Kohli. Babar has always been a true competitor and gentleman as well as a fantastic cricketer.

Extraordinary. What a team and attitude England have now. Ashes Summer is going to be box office.

Jonny Bairstow will be back as well.

Wow, fantastic result. I had huge misgivings that England's very positive, not reckless, approach to batting would succeed against New Zealand and then India in our summer, let alone in Pakistan. Big raps to Rob Key and Brendon McCullum, but most of all to Ben Stokes for implementing the plans alongside his brave decision-making on the field of play.

Australia will approach the Ashes in a similar vein to England, it will make for compelling viewing.

Indeed. And hopefully Joffra.

Thought yesterday that the declaration was far too generous on such a flat track but what do I know. Anderson and Robinson were superhuman in their efforts during the day. Fantastically bold captaincy to the last ball. And it was also so good to see the Pakistani supporters turn out in vast numbers throughout the test, which you can only say about English supporters nowadays. This new brand of test cricket that England have adopted will certainly come unstuck at times but I’d rather see then win boldly and lose badly rather than the timid stuff we’ve seen in recent years whereby we more often than not meekly surrendered.

That was a stunning test, great performances and great captaincy from Stokes, but have to give kudos to the Pakistan team as well, that was a really tough win and their first innings in other circumstances would have been match winning or at least made the draw.

Never knowingly understood

Just read this article on the BBC website from the TMS stats man Andy Zaltzman.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/cr

Two stats stand out more than anything for me that despite England winning they lost a wicket every 8 overs compared to Pakistans 12.2 overs and that England’s two innings combined equalled just 54% of the combined overs of the a Pakistani innings. Incredible.

I think at the moment, there is no room for him (Archer)

His county teammate will keep him out

On the subject of the test itself, listening to some of the Kent diehard members who are saying that the brand of cricket in Pakistan is killing the red ball game - Absolutely ludicrous, as in my mind it will draw even more crowds

how can a 5 day test with 1800 runs, 37 wickets, and a result with minutes to go not be good for the red ball game? .. complete nonsense.

Those diehards, would see the game die.

So true.

The crowds have apparently been brilliant, which is probably partly down to it being so long since England have toured, but IMO the east thing about that match wasn't just that England won, or even that it was such fun, but that they might just be saving Test cricket.

Really came here to ask how it was possible for me not to know that Banger Trescothick is the batting coach.

Explains a lot and a great move by whoever it was to get him in. Can't have been easy to persuade him and delighted to see that he has overcome his demons enough to be able to tour.

The barmy army posted several clips during the game and you could see how good the spirit was between them and the home supporters.

If anyone sent seen it yet watch Anderson’s ball that did for Rizwan this morning. I don’t think any batsman past or present could have played it.

That was a nervy session of test cricket. It all turned on a slightly dodgy umpire decision.

Was very close call. Think that Stokes needs to temper the use of the spinners a bit. For all their effort Leach, Root and Jacks aren’t in the same bracket as the Pakistani spinners. McCullum and Stokes need to have a good chat with Mooen and Rashid before the ashes series. Seems criminal that we don’t make the use out of those two as we should have done over the years, especially Rashid.

I thought the one that Robinson got Babar with was pretty exceptional. Like an 80+ mph off-break starting two foot outside off and coming back to hit off and middle.
Test poised on a knife edge at lunch though-64 to win with three wickets left.

And somehow need to fit Bairstow back in for New Zealand! Could they bring him back as a WK?
