…Wow, they don't mess around do they ! Bourdeaux town hall ablaze in protests over raising the pension age.
They'll have to get Patron Maigret on the case if he's finished his Calvados.

When you've created cheddar, why would you bother continuing to experiment?

I’ll leave the thread with this…

10% of the world’s GDP is kept offshore hoarded in tax havens.

Doing nothing.

We can absolutely afford pensions at 60 if we wanted to change things.

Absolutely. Apple alone have $115bn squirrelled away in tax havens but hey, that’s fine, they have a cool brand

I never have bought and never will buy an Apple product for that reason.

When I went to see Epica in Paris in '09/10 (forget) it coincided with one of those giant Union marches it was bloody Impressive.
I found a metal bar by accident that did 'Grand Biere' Leffe and sat there for a few hors enjoying it.

Finding Elysee Monmartre was fun after using my Drunken French, everyone was lovely 'cos I was speaking French but my accent was so bad one couple didn't know I was English and asked me if I spoke it. (apparently sober speaking French I sound like a Belgian walloon)

King’s visit cancelled . Probably a good idea considering France’s mixture of baying mobs and monarchs.

People have worked really hard to steal that money, why should they have to give it up?

Poll: QPR to finish 7th or Brentford to drop out of the top 6?

Paddyhoops and DistortR make very valid points, why are those who work in private industry subsidising the pensions of those who work in public services? It’s simply unfair.

Except that:
- Many companies, like my last one, set up shell companies through which to funnel their revenues, thereby avoiding paying their fair share of tax, to the detriment of our public services
- Public sector pensions are just one part of the remuneration package. A lot of public sector workers are on very low wages.

And no, I’m not a public sector worker…

Agree with the French, standing up for themselves.

I think it's modern day dictatorship we're all living through both here and abroad.

I do agree on all of that but two wrongs don’t make a right as they say.

Clamp down on shell companies and tax havens by all means, but it doesn’t alter the fact that the person at the tills in supermarkets, the fellas moving goods in white vans, all are subsidising public sector pensions whilst invariably earning considerably less than their public sector counterparts.

This century, average public sector pay has been consistently above private sector pay even before pensions. It’s just about catching up now but however you look at it, there is simply no justifiable reason for this pension anomaly.

Sorry but that is literally untrue. As an example, health care assistants get paid less than people at the bottom of the ladder in Aldi. That is the truth of the matter.

You might be surprised to hear even junior doctors’ starting salaries are almost exactly the same as someone working in Pret. Just think of the years of study and huge student debt a junior doctor will have racked up by the time they start working.

That's one thing I do actually admire the French for. They absolutely don't take any crap when they think their government is shitting on them from a great height. The British are too bloody accepting and apathetic for their own good.

Do you, actually, want that sort of stuff going on over here??

Not as familiar with UK remuneration as I'd like to be to comment on this but...in Massachusetts, public sector workers were rather poorly compensated for their work but rewarded with a small pension upon retirement. This has changed. Nowadays, the public sector are (on average), paid better than their contemporaries in the 'dreaded' private sector and receive pensions which raise ones eyebrows. This is not going to change as the ponzi scheme of government has a vested interest, and even though most union pension funds are underfunded, the private sector is continually being 'robbed' by local and federal government to supplement them.
