Danny maddix....wow....carrying on from the others I've chosen, from my era as a Rangers fan, this guy always was a favourite. Quick, great leap(the ridiculous amount of headers he won), the smile on the face, the passion and commitment, the desire to defend. A class act for me, I remember him still being here in darker days, wearing that neon yellow away kit with black stripe, Ericsson sponsor dark days. And in those days still being totally up for it, looking head and shoulders above many on the pitch, especially his fellow defenders. Not to mention born on the 11th of October sharing my very own birthday(you know when you were a kid and you looked on the stickers or in the programme to see who in the squad was born on or at least near your birthday and hoped it wasn't someone Shiiite).
I remember just watching games of him winning so many headers,beating bigger men with more 'known' names.

Pains me to say it , given how long he played for us, but he was one of those players back in the heyday when he joined like, well, Devon White and Gary Chivers that if you saw their name on the team sheet you knew Paul Parker or Les or Macca were out and we were in trouble. Danny was a lovely chap I'm sure, and a talented player, particularly once we were relegated to his level, but he had a brain fade in him pretty much every game in the top flight. Osman Kakay is this generations Danny Maddix, able to play about 85% of this level.

Totally fair shout, I was just a young un when Danny was first 11 material, and from where we were then and what we had he looked good, always impressed, gave it all the heart and you know what, I like that, he cared, he left it out there.
Interesting point you make though,the transition from player to player, squad to squad, times to other times, different memories and impressions left to all of us individually. But that's what this is about....he was one of the good guys though..no doubt

You're seriously comparing Danny Maddix to Osman Kakay?
My mind is blown. Mind blown.
Can just imagine Kakay going to Leeds and marking one of the Premier League's most dangerous strikers completely out of the game. Oh yeah.

Maddix was an excellent defender, lightning quick with great anticipation and concentration, rarely fouled and was also good in the air.
He went straight into the first team as we were playing the sweeper system in 87-88. That man-marking role definitely suited his talents but he was also good in a flat back four.
Could also bang a goal, and some of his goals were damn fine.
Injuries hampered him from about 95(?) onwards, but prior to that he was really very good.

Danny's in my top 10 all time favourite players. An excellent defender, with great pace, strength and could pass a ball too. Went on to captain the club, and in some dark times was one of the few bright spots.
My two biggest memories of Danny are:
1. I think it was his first game back from that awful foot injury that almost ended his career. Great game v Sheff Wed that we won 3-2, with goals from Les, Trev and Gallen's first goal for the first team. But what gets forgotten is Danny coming on as a sub. Crowd were at fever pitch anyway as it was a tumultuous game, and he started a move at the School End, and then just hammered forward, arrowing down the middle of the pitch. A cross came in, I guess from Impey, and he met it, right in front of the Loft, willimg him to score and I think it hit the outside of the post, keeper beaten. I think there might have been a full scale pitch invasion if that went in.
2. Other end of the scale. Palace game, needing to win to stay up. Maddix was by a million miles player of the season that year, but he was nursing an injury. I got there really early as usual back then and watched him gingerly jogging round the pitch with the physio. He was the one player we needed for that game. Somehow, he played, was excellent as usual, and we won 6-0 in a game that definitely wasn't fixed.
Also, Dale Winton once told me he quite fancied Danny.
Fantastic defender.

Absolute Bollocks, in one of his first games he kept Ian Rush in his back pocket.

A fine defender for us, and one of the best man-to-man markers, although still irritates me when he let Collymore escape after having him in his pocket all game. I think the main problem wih Danny from what I remember is injuries, as others mentioned. I think that held him back and why the later, mid-90s version was not so well thought of - he was also playing in rubbish team back then. But at his peak, his speed and anticipation were up there with the best of them. His biggest weakness from memory was composure with the ball at his feet but back then not so much emphasis on playing out from the back.

My main memory of him was an early game against West Ham, I think he played in midfield that day and with the game drifting a bit he threw himself into 2 great tackles, won them both then poked ball through to Fereday who crossed for a great Mark Stein goal but those Maddix tackles always stood out for me. Not long after he scored the winner

100% agree with this. Danny was well known as a man to man marking specialist, and was very good at it. Quality player and great servant to the club.
