Dembele has had a free ride this season 18:18 - Apr 4 with 6624 viewsnumptydumpty

Seems to be one that has escaped criticism this season.

Has practically been injured all season and when he has been on the pitch, there has been practically nothing happening.

Appreciate he was in a ridiculous position last time out but he has been a big disappointment for me.

I was extremely hopeful for the guy on the first few games. Was thinking how we have we managed to pull this one off. Couldn't believe we had signed such a player with such potential.

For me he is giving off Chris Willock vibes.

I want him to do well but fear he wont and will be another that is hardly ever available.

From what I have seen of both Yang and Saito, I think my focus for overseas would be in the Asian countries where work ethics is so much more of a thing. Is a massive generalisation, do appreciate that but I guess go to what works and maybe avoid small European leagues for now !!!

But yes Dembele needs to show something before the season is out for me.

He got a permanent contract and then got permanently injured and he has returned permanently out of form

Appreciate Madsen has not done well but he is one up on Dembele. He has been always available. Strange that by way of comparison, Dembele has not been criticised much at all by this forum. Maybe because fans think he could be good eventually. It's not been evident at all so far.

Not sure I completely agree.

Most players need a fair amount of minutes to get back in a rhythm after a long injury absence and it was a long absence .
Judging him mostly on 45 mins where we played like he was ‘Frey size’ against a huge Stoke team seems a tad harsh .

Having said that his form did drop off alarmingly before his injury (maybe he was carrying it for a while ) so he does need to improve . We need him.
But I’d say we won’t see the very best of Dembele until August unfortunately.

Wasn't judging him at all on last time out as said in the post.

But he has not done anything on his return but looks disinterested so far for me

I feel Smyth, Saito, Chair and Yang are all ahead of him and for several games Morgan also.played in a role Dembele could be doing and did better than Dembele has all season. Think he will be injured a lot also.

Love to be wrong. It's just a hunch but based on fitting that type of players mindset that we have seen in many from our past.

I don't agree. For a start, he's only played in 18 games and was out injured for half the season. He came back when the whole team were on the slide. He's been good and not so good, and plenty have commented on his not so good performances.

He was brilliant quite a bit before he got injured. He's only just returning from injury and not had much of a go and certainly not in his natural position. Tomorrow I'd be starting him in the 10, Yang on the left and Smyth on the right.

Not sure where the work rate stuff comes from, doesn't put in less of a shift than Paul Smyth for instance. But puts in better numbers!

Sorry missed that .

But you do say “better than Dembele has all season”.
He hasn’t played for most of it.
That’s very harsh .

He needs to improve that’s for sure .

Totally disagree.

Do we need to keep finding new players to slag off?

Dembele looked sharp and promising when he first played but has been injured for ages.
Ridiculous to judge him on the last match when played out of position.

I’m glad he’s back in the squad and think he will develop into a good player for us.

I think he’s only scored 1 goal this season. I can’t think of any games where he’s assisted any goals or produced a MOTM performance. I would add Smyth to this list as well. I think he has only scored 1 goal this season as well. Maybe 2. All these players in attacking areas who are not doing enough.

2 assists in his first 2 games, 3rd in his 5th game. Got a few of Clive's MOTM's around that time I think too. Was brilliant at the start and will be again

Yes provided he doesn't get injured again

I think he will end up being on the injured list a lot. Can't know that as said just an idea.

And he was great for first couple of games and then medicore for several games before he got injured nearly for the rest of the season

He has been a poor signing so far as only done well in a couple of games. The fact he has been injured is part of that.

I wouldn't have him here next season myself. But he has had an extension so with us he is. Currently convenient he got injured game after signed a permanent contract.

Hope he proves me wrong.

Willock vibes without the Willock period of decent stuff so far. Willock was "injured" a lot too for prolonged periods.

Let's give him both barrels.

More hard working east Asians and fewer lazy n words. That's the ticket.

Watch this space i say

I said he has been a bad signing so.far as had only two decent games and injured a lot. I didn't say I was right it's just an idea that for me could easily be a reality. It is a football forum for fans. It's just my opinion. I will still support the guy and hope he achieves.

If he proves me wrong and remains injury free and performs like a king no one would be more delighted than me.

Have we got a list of who’s next up on the block so we can prepare our attack on him?
6

I’m not sure it’s him.

We have a habit of buying players and having no idea where to play them.

Chair has been here since time began but is anyone at the club genuinely 100% where to play him.

Excuse me drawing from the old gits football handbook but I give you..
Parkes.
Clement McLintock Webb Gillard.
Francis Masson Leach.
Thomas Bowles Givens.

Did anyone have any doubts of who played where and why from day one? Leach maybe but we had Busby Beck Delve and numerous others and you knew exactly where they fitted in.

4-2-3-1 is designed to pull the wool over the eyes of the paying spectator.

Wasn't against him at all.just said he has unfortunately been a bad signing so far....

Want him to succeed of course...

It's more a question of recruiting too many injury prone players...

He’s had one bad injury. He isn’t injury prone. He played almost 50 games last season. Players do unfortunately get injured. He was good before the injury, struggled in a struggling side, got hurt and has come back and failed to find form in a struggling side.

Very good bit on the Patreon about players coming back into a poor side and failing to light it up. Maybe worth a listen.

As Clive has frequently pointed out, we are in the footballing equivalent of LIDL's out of date cast-offs when it comes to what our budget within the dreaded Profit and Sustainability Rules will allow us to get.

We only get players of Dembele's undoubted quality if something's not quite right, and we rely heavily on top-notch coaching and physical support to bring them up to the level they need to be.

Rather than shoot your bullets at the poor player himself, why don't you aim them at our esteemed head of Performance? (Assuming those bullets can fly across several continents and time zones, of course..)

Now I'm the first to admit that on reflection, some of my threads to some posts on here have been ill-considered and crass to the extreme. This post is right up there with those.

The lad has only started 11 league games and 5 sub appearances. In that small amount of time he has as many goals as Smyth and one fewer assist. Same number of assists as Saito, two fewer goals.

if he's viewed as a disappointment then the same has to be said of the other two. Who in spite of running around a lot, appear to not have the required consistency, in terms of end product, better decision-making, showing for the ball a lot more like Chair and being physically stronger. All traits that are needed in this division for players that play in that position. Unfair comparison(s), but Gnoto and Dolan are of the same/similar height and possess the above traits.

Can Dembele cut it at this level? I have my doubts, but those reservations apply equally to Saito and Smyth who have both flattered to deceive in my view.

For reference, hamstrung Willock had four goals and four assists last season after having played the same number of games as Smyth and Saito, in far fewer minutes, as his game time during GA's reign were limited.

He looked brilliant when he first joined, got badly injured and is working his way back to fitness playing minutes here and there in a series of random positions in a team badly out of form.

Give the kid a break for fks sake

Just turned 22, his first season in the Championship, coming off a near season ending injury that required surgery, back into a team that is massively flailing and missing key support, attack and leadership where he's being asked to play a number of different positions to cover others.
