Saints' historian, 'Fizhugh Fella', co-author of the best book on Saints history, just posted this on Saintsweb:
"Hopefully this is considered worthy of a new thread. With help from Keith Fray who has digitalised all Southampton's results since 1885 in preperation of the forthcoming Official History book, I have checked to see if Saints have ever overturned a three goal deficit to win a competitive football match. The answer is never have we managed it - either home or away.
We have come back from being 3-0 down at home to draw 3-3 a few times, eg Liverpool (Pahars), West Ham (Paine) and Forest in the Cup (1963) but never won a three goal comeback and certainly not away. What is it about our manager? Never before have we scored 5 goals away in a either half of a game and yet we did it at Charlton under his stewardship.

He (and his team) have totally transformed the club from a depressing mess into a cohesive 'all for one, one for all' mentality and they fight like hell for each other.
I think we have too much to do to get promoted this season (after the awful start under Still) but we can feel pride in our team again. It's a pity about our start becuase, as today showed, we could hold our own in the Prem now there is a sense of belief. | | | |

Quite. He keeps everyone on their toes, and keeps the oppo guessing. There's no comparison with Rusty who's only tactic was to keep the ball as long as possible in your own box and a couple of times in the game move it forward and try and score. OK we went on a long unbeaten run, but we would never have got into the playoffs unless Bazunu had got injured and we were forced to go long with Mccarthy.
Rusty was so predictable, Tonda sees every game differently, he's intelligent and decisive, and the players are responding to him, it's great to see. | |

He is the real deal The turning point of our season was the U21 game against Real Madrid. Tonda showed then he is ABLE. If you're good enough then you're old enough and he is still learning.
I have rarely, if ever, seen a manager with such a grasp on all aspects of his job and such desire to win. We used to speak of a magic black box. You will find it slightly to the right of Tonda's left lug'ole

Here is a man who at the tender age of 33 turned our dysfunctional basket case of shell shocked souless players who'd won 4 league games out of the previous 51 games into World Beaters winning 6 of his 1st 7 games in the blink of an eye. 💪
After a little blip after being confirmed as boss, he has taken us to an even higher level of expectation.
He is so totally focused on the job at hand, and is totally respected by the players and has made them fall back in love with playing football and winning games. Also reunited the fans and players again. But step out of line and he will turn you into ash with the death laser stare

He was still there at the 2014 World Cup.
In 2012, he was 19. Nineteen.
Unless he'd won a raffle or something, there must have been a reason back then that the German national team (a) took him on and (b) kept him on.
