Exactly what I said. Went to the wetherspoons in Tottenham Court Rd, only to discover they don't start serving until midday. Took the short walk to Leicester Square, to discover the spoons there also didn't serve alcohol until midday, yet the all bar one was happy to serve us pints at £8.30 a pop. Now we knew it would probably be a ballache getting in, so we left with plenty of time to spare. Got to Stratford at around 1.45/1.50, and started the long walk across some barren wasteland. By the time we'd got through border force and up the stairs, it was about 10 minutes to ko. By the time we'd got through another border force security check, tickets/turnstiles not working, and pure volume of people, I didn't get to my seat till about 2.45. Walked through my front door about 10pm cold and hungry, vowing never to return to that hell hole of a ground. Proud of the team, but a bit gutted at what could have been had we had our first choice 11 out there

They are stuffing the ground with tourists, kids-for-a-quid (yesterday) and giving out free tickets to schools and any other incentive they can think of just so they can spin it that the ground is always full, therefore justifying it. If they do get relegated, we'll see the real level of support and if leaving Upton Part was wise after all. Three stands were already fairly new-ish and only the old 'chicken run' side not development due to issues with houses on that side. All I can say is thank god the Olympics weren't in west London as that could easily have been us.

Yeah I couldn’t believe we were checked and body scanned three times, even had to take my hat off every time. Wtf did they fear we were all bringing in?? And getting out of there afterwards was laughable. Or to be more exact, lamentable. Why close off certain routes through Westfield while leaving others open? Fans are still going through there either bloody way. In order to let the crowds dissipate we can went for a couple of pints in one of the restaurants, stringing them along that we were gonna buy food. Actually ended up getting some nibbles anyway though

You should’ve gone to the Holborn spoons as they were serving well before 11.I reckon they started about 10am.

| West hams ground.... on 13:36 - Jan 12 with 982 views | MrSheen | I hardly ever drink before games these days and I’m always looking for a chance to get some steps in. Rather than take a walk through a shopping centre, I’d rather a stroll through some Victorian streets and an industrial backwater. We got off the District Line at Bow Road and set off northeast. There were so few people around that I was worried it would end in a closed bridge or cut de sac but we got over the motorway and the water and found a gate that would let us in about half an hour just before 2. Just as well as we were in our seats with 5 minutes to spare. I didn’t feel cold in the ground as I was dressed for a walk. I liked the rail seating, which I’d never had a chance to use before, well seated to leaning forward bellowing support all afternoon. It was more straightforward on the way back as we had more people to follow. We were at the motorway in 10 minutes and on Bow Road in 25. Along the way we passed a gated housing estate called Bow Quarter, which looked like the asylum Renfield was detained in Dracula, but actually used to be the Bryant & May match factory of Phossy-Jaw fame. There’s not much life on Bow Road, and we were surprised we were able to walk straight up to the bar an order at the first pub we came to, the Bow Bells, officially a home-only pub, it looked like we were the first there from the ground. It filled up more in the next 15 minutes, but there still seemed to be more people camped out watching the game on TV than had been at the stadium, and it was pretty quiet when we left after an hour. The natives weren’t particularly friendly, but they weren’t hostile either. I’d go back that way next season. | | | |

Does anyone know how many were watching us in our one season there? I believe the track was longer than a modern 400m track so the views must have been more distant than yesterday’s.

| West hams ground.... on 11:31 - Jan 12 by Juzzie | Did a quick google and; "The refit of the London Olympic Stadium (now London Stadium) cost around £323 million, adding to the original build, with the total project exceeding £700 million". For that kind of money I wonder if it would almost have been better to have demolished the Olympic stadium completely in the first place and start again. They have the site & footprint so maybe that would be better than the awful refit. Still would have the same issues getting to & from the ground but I think if the stadium was built properly with good catering etc, that would be acceptable. Let's face it, most grounds in London (apart from the lovely LR of course) have limited Underground links and are always a 'mare. Cannot think of any that match ours. There's probably no scope now for that if they go down but even if they stay up they have been perennial strugglers for a while now it's probably not worth the risk unless they can get back to a mid/upper mid stable footing. West Ham contributed a mahoosive £15m (half what hey just paid for Taty, inc add-ons) and have a 99 year lease on a £4m annual rent which doesn't cover the costs so the taxpayer picks up the rest, again, so even if there is any consideration to do it, the costs have to be 100% with West Ham, the tax payers have funded enough already. So that's not going to happen considering the owners are tighter than a ducks arris so they, the fans and the tax payer are stuck with this monstrosity. [Post edited 12 Jan 12:15]

If I recall correctly, a condition of accepting our 2012 bid, was the stadium had to retain the ability to host athletic events. However, aside of Olympics and maybe world championships in big cities, stadiums rarely, if ever, fill out to olympic games capacities anywhere in the world for athletics events. City/Manchester Council's bid for the 2002 Empire Games made conversion to a football stadium an element. The running track was moved to an adjacent site, with a reduced stadium capacity. Not sure, but I don't think it sells out, andthey 'dug down' and repurposed it into a football ground and have a far better stadium than Wham!, who are now stuck with a bowl in a non-descript luna setting...boo-hoo!

We actually tried it twice, in the 30s and 60s, but crowds fluctuated wildly without ever settling high enough to justify the cost. Good job the directors at the time kept hold of Loftus Rd. On the outside of the pitch was an athletics track, greyhound track and a concrete cycling track - and at one end there was also a swimming pool - before you got to the stands. Would have needed binoculars. [Post edited 12 Jan 14:25]

I can imagine teams now adding a synchronised swimming routine to their goal celebrations. The fourth official has indicated a minimum of seventeen minutes additional time.

We drank at St Pancras and did the high speed out there, which worked really well I was quite pleased with myself for coming up with that. Train only takes 6 minutes and because we walked through the west ham security and walked around it sounds like we missed a lot of the OTT security measures nearer the away end coming from Stratford. Afterwards... complete fcking pain in the ars. Walked out of the ground at 17.10. Train at 17.49. Oh, we'll easily make that says I. No chance. Missed it by a street. Every fcking bridge, every fcking walkway, another barrier, another steward, another funnel, another crush, another queue. It took us an hour to go from the away end to getting onto a train. I would genuinely stop going if QPR played at a place like that. Echo the thoughts from above, treasure what we have. Walk out the Crown at 14.40, into my seat in time for the teams coming out 15 mins later.

Thankfully we weren't lumbered with it and LR being turned into flats/houses. Luckily we had the option to go back. But yes, not acquiring the site in the 80's was a big faux pas but that's a whole other story! However, forward wind just over 100 years and if the 2012 Olympics were held in west London (say, the Old Oak common trading area) and it was the same stadium architecture/construction and as we were (just about) a PL team then, we could have been lumbered with it in the same way and absolutely no chance to leave. Phew.

"....but actually used to be the Bryant & May match factory" - me and the missus have friends that live there. Fkin awful. As well as being a gated place (which is probably not a bad thing as the only safe way in or out is to drive, no way would I want to walk there or back out again. My missus did it once from Bow Road tube and vowed never to do that again, only go by car) the flats are awful. Go through their 4th floor front door and they have a small bedroom to the left, bathroom to the right and straight ahead for the kitchen/sitting room (I hate that layout, such a cop out by developers and I don't care if it's trendy, it's a con). Then there are steps up to a mezzanine over the sitting room area which is basically the 2nd bedroom but it's not really a bedroom, it's just a big bunk-bed area. They have two kids under 10 years old and I think I would go stir crazy living there with my missus and two kids. Oh... and they have the audacity to be marketed as luxury flats. PMSL!!
