Ok, i know it's my fault but really...

Already had 3 points and then in the space of 2 months picked 1 x 24mph in a 20 and 2 x 23mph. All on the same road, a main wide A road that was 40mph not so long ago. So about to lose my licene for 6 months.

Rang the police phone number as instructed, nice guy i spoke to said they literally can't cope with the volume of 12 pointers coming through since 20 mph became a mainstream thing.

Still at least the council can spend it on rainbow pedestrian crossing etc.

Grrrr.

In Ireland they have recently introduced 60KM zones for ‘country’ roads. But they haven’t put up 60KM signposts, that would be boring. Instead they have erected speed signs with FIVE diagonal black lines across it - I mean how could you not know it was a 60KM zone - clear as dishwater.

My house in Kerry is at the end of a quarter mile boreen. There’s a primary school at the bottom just before the main road. One year I went back and the council had installed a 30 km/h sign at the turning, and about 100m up from the school, a brand new 80 km/h sign. Try as hard as I can, I’ve never got above 27 km/h before the road runs out.

Speeding fines, points, potholes and pedestrian crossings have slowed me down too.
Funny thing is, since I’ve adapted my driving I don’t seem to take any longer getting places.

Related to this was shifting from moaning about traffic, to accepting that I am the traffic - that’s helped my mindset too.

Life’s hard enough without having roads boil my piss.

dont forget the bike lanes that are as wide as a car lane....

take king street/hammersmith for instance.
a bus broke down outside marks and spencer , if you dont know king street, its a one way street with two lanes, both same size one for cars one for bikes, with them poles dividing the two lanes.
ok the traffic had to be diverted down shepherds bush road and turn left at goldhawk road...
but the two buses and remaining cars still behind that broken down bus must have been a nightmare to get out.

It's a one-way street for cars, but it's a two-way cycle lane that needs adequate space for bikes going both ways.

I don't know what it's like in England, but in Ireland there's no speeding around schools because an Irish citizen who has children is required by law to double-park, roll down their windows and talk to their friends for half the morning.

This has successfully eliminated speeding.

Brian, Do they happen to drive Range Rover Vogue's and dress in their pyjamas and dressing gowns (Or a onesie)

Because if so they have emigrated to here too

Just a counter argument for 20 mph zones.

Compelling? From TFL? Don't make me laugh.

Present some independent, evidence-based research and I'll consider reading it. Anything peddled by Khan is rejected.

And whilst we're on the subject, let's also consider the environmental impact of making cars run so slow.

If you're unable to control the speed of your car to the extent that you would certainly fail a test, I can't really see why you would expect to be able to continue driving.

Have a day off, son. Driving at 23MPH is hardly being out of control.

Nothing is more corrosive of respect for the law than its selective application, particularly when it’s motivated by revenue collection and the convenience of enforcement. Turning the police into a profit centre is a disastrous strategy for maintaining authority, as is belittling your armed forces. Who else is going to sustain you, your enemies?

For a person on foot, the average risk of being killed if struck by a car is about 1 in 10 at 23 mph.

Travelling at 32mph and that rises to 1 in 4.

Reduced speed limits save lives.

Lower speed limits reduce damage to one's automobile when struck by a dawdling pedestrian.

The report collates collision data from STATS19 to examine the impact of the introduction of 20mph schemes on borough roads. STATS19 is the data collected by the police recording details of road collisions that have resulted in personal injury. Data is collected according to specifications set out by the Department for Transport.

Yep. Hard to get right.
Adding zorbing lanes could be fun.
Just bouncing ideas about. 👀

Can I ask was this in South West London?

My Dad got done on the A3 near the Robin Hood round about more or less doing the same he had to then go on the drivers awareness course to avoid the points.

But 24 in a 20 is such fine margins especially in my dads case at 4.30am

I'm saying this as a non driver, but there is also an argument about giving a certain amount of reasonable flexibility in the months immediately after these roads have been reduced to 20. e.g. 23 in a 20 mph zone - there's a line between public safety and affecting people's finances, livelihood etc.

No argument about the reasons for 20 mph, but like every policy it needs to be implemented in a sensible way.

Well quite - but the bottom line is it's more about generating revenue, road safety is largely secondary.

Fine revenue goes to central government (consolidated fund), not local councils directly. Indeed, councils are actually spending significant money implementing these schemes with no direct financial return - it costs them about £1,100 per kilometre to add signage, enforcement, etc.

If it were about revenue, they'd stick with 30mph limits and enforce those - much easier to catch people doing 40mph+ with bigger fines. The 20mph limits actually make enforcement harder (as the police told the OP) because the volume is overwhelming the system.

The public health evidence is genuinely driving this, even if the implementation feels heavy-handed.

It's always noisiest at the shallow end
