| Three game week nonsense debunked for good 14:50 - Mar 17 with 5361 views | Myke | Hopefully having won game three (away from home with a one day less ‘turnaround than Leicester, who were at home twice) we can finally debunk the nonsense theory about being somehow disadvantaged more than any other Championship club. All the theories can be binned. Have Charlton more resources than we have? QPR 0 Middllesborough 4. Middlesbrough 0 Charlton 1. Not exactly a local derby for Charlton either. It is either (or both) self-prophesying psychological rubbish or a complete lack of effort by the players. So please no more defeatism simply because eleven fit young men have to run around a bit three times in eight days | | | | |

| Three game week nonsense debunked for good on 10:14 - Mar 18 by stowmarketrange | Unfortunately some teams have more 3 game weeks that involve 2 consecutive away games than others.Us and Bristol city have 6 such weeks this season whereas Watford and Leicester have only 3. Some teams have perfect 3 game weeks, like H,A and home again,or A,H and away for the last. Obviously a team in the midlands will cover less distance than a team like Southampton or Middlesbrough, but the tough 3 game weeks should be more evenly spread over the 24 teams than it currently is. I don’t think that there is a perfect answer though. |
Exactly! It should be more even than three versus six over one season. We certainly shouldn’t have this two seasons in a row because it makes a difference in points gained on average no matter which team it affects. Even if it’s just a matter of one or two points and maybe a couple of goals more that could be vital at the end of the season, not to mention the difference it makes in terms of momentum between drawing and winning.

| Three game week nonsense debunked for good on 09:45 - Mar 18 by francisbowles | Myke you haven't addressed the points I raised but I will attempt to address yours. Charlton on a decent run of form, last eight prior to Middlesbrough W3 D3 L2, go there after 72hours+ 'rest' and win. They then travel back to London, arriving probably around 3am. They may have a massage or ice bath before leaving for their homes, so probably around 5am before they get to bed. The rest of Thursday at home and then on Friday train and relatively short coach journey to Oxford on what is usually a very busy Friday afternoon. On the following day against a poor side they managed a draw. After narrow wins against Birmingham and Middlesbrough, to finish the week with a draw at Oxford, could be construed as a drop off in form. Middlesbrough's recent home form last four D3 (Oxford, Leicester and Bristol) L1 (Charlton). Btw looking at Charlton's last nine games, they haven't scored more than one goal in any of them. This would tend to suggest they are playing in a similar practical method, albeit relatively successfully, as we attempted with those dreary 0-0 draws that we were all so disappointed with. The last time they managed two was on the 31st January at Leicester who played for 75 mins with ten men. |
“After narrow wins against Birmingham (we lost) and Middlesbrough (we were thrashed) to finish a week with a draw at Oxford( we drew and it was considered a ‘valuable’ point) could be construed as a drop off in form” 7/9 including two away trips, can we please have that ‘drop off in form’ Like I said to Nix, FB, I don’t expect to win every game, but I am entitled to expect my team to compete. Too often they don’t and when possible they roll out the ‘3 games a week’ excuse. Talking about stats to back it up, I don’t have them in front of me, but Clive has written previously about how our 3 games a week return (in terms of points won) is one of, if not the worst, in the division. That comes from a defeatist mentality, and should not be encouraged from the top.

Yes I agree with that. However, for you and others to dismiss it as nonsense is absurd and expectations of our largely inexperienced squad, recently severely depleted, is far-fetched and idealistic. The problem is we haven't been good enough in our recruitment, partly for financial reasons, as well as our conditioning to improve those statics that you refer to Clive highlighting.

But we won pretty comfortably' Mart, I think you are overlooking the huge amount of luck and opposition mistakes that went our way on Saturday. The Leicester pundits were saying we were gifted all the goals. As Clive pointed out and I posted above, Varane's late error if punished could have seen a very nervy ending. |
Very likely . But it’s nothing to do with us being ‘tired’. It’s absolutely to do with us being shyte.

| Three game week nonsense debunked for good on 09:57 - Mar 18 by francisbowles | I have thought that as well but players have lives and families at home. What would they do with a day off in a remote hotel after the midweek match? They might get bored and cause issues. Then there is the huge increase in accomodation costs for the clubs. We also don't know the details of players contracts, which could possibly make this impossible. |
There are a lot of jobs that require spending 2-3 days away from home occasionally in a hotel and people with families do it all the time. I’m sure we could add it to contracts too, as is common in many normal employment contracts. We send international players away for international breaks every couple of months already. I agree you need to keep them busy and occupied but it can’t be that hard to find a place that has physio rooms and a training pitch plus gym. Ok, maybe 25 physio rooms minimum :-) Quinns used the varsity facilities - pitches, pool and gym in Guildford, which also has a hotel next door. The England ladies rugby team used to stay there - can’t believe it’s the only type of facility in the UK, even up north !!! As for costs - what’s it worth to get points on the road and less injuries compared to an occasional hotel bill ? I guess that’s a piece of analysis someone should be doing to see if it’s viable. Assuming 1 point = £name you can work it out pretty quickly and trying it out once or twice might be a good proof point. Beats an ice bath at 3am for me….. [Post edited 18 Mar 14:11]

I've thought of it and you have too, so I would imagine the club, and other clubs, have as well and there must be a reason, or reasons, why they won't or can't do it.

Anyone else on that 'luxury' Kingham coach when it was pulled over on the motorway because someone had complained the naughty films being played were putting off other drivers? Might have been Man Utd away we heading for.

A lot of whinging about QPR getting a bum deal on these three game weeks and other clubs less so. If we on the wrong end of them, next time we complain before they officially released. As said its clubs such as Plymouth and Sunderland that get the bum deals every year by ways of mileage. etc. By comparison to a lot of teams, we have a lot of games around us in London and the south east that are short journeys etc. It is on occasions rough for the committed fan, i agree, but the fact teams go to Europe and still perform etc, and yep they not in the back of a Morris Minor on heat. If a lot of our fans complain about this being "so unfair", Kevin and Perry style and we would have done so so much better, if these had been avoided. Over time, its the same for everyone. Not having it at all, that these players cant cope physically with these schedules. They are elite sportsmen, with all the nutrition, muscle and stamina training to cope with such things and they are all at a stage of life, where the body can easily cope with the odd stress and strain. The three game weeks are not fair on fans - YES But if we are making this as an excuse why we not getting six points and over, each three game week, due to this, its not because of travel, its because we are SHYTE !!!@@@@ Jeez...... No one is saying it's just the travel, but, why do you think the richer clubs fly to long distant away games and rotate their large expensive squads?

Yes I largely agree Numpty . I can understand the frustration from fans for sure . It doesn’t seem fair that we do 6, 3 game weeks with 2 away games in them and others do nothing like it. As I’ve said before , I was told by a very good source that the football league template the fixtures . Now I don’t know if that for the last 2 seasons, 3 seasons or more , or it’s complete nonsense. But the similarities between our fixtures in the last 2 seasons and certain dates is eye catching to say the least . First game , last game , last game before Christmas , Boxing Day, New Year’s Day , Valentine’s Day, bonfire night all identical ( as in home or away not opponent ). The long jaunts for 2 seasons running for example between Hull and Plymouth in 72 hours ….TWICE. So I understand it. But that’s for us on here and moreso the travelling fans to complain about . We shouldn’t be hearing the head coach mention it in every interview. There was an interview after the game at Middlesbrough away where Madsen directly mentioned it . Dear me, when was that game , October/ November? 3 game weeks shouldn’t be an issue at that stage of the season . The old adage in football and I heard it a lot when I was playing 35 years ago was “don’t give players an excuse “. And as I said previously in this thread , instead of instilling a winning mentality inside the club , for too long we too often look for excuses . If you tell a player that they must be tired . They will feel tired. I bet Coventry or Millwall don’t feel tired right now and they aren’t exactly the rich clubs flying all over the place . No, because they are conditioned and fit for a 46 game season. Maybe we should try that first ? [Post edited 18 Mar 17:40]

My 2 pence worth is that not only does this schedule affect the Championship but English football in general. If we take what is thought the pinnacle of football trophies, the Champions League, since it's inception in 1995 English teams have only won it 7 times, while the Barcelona, Real Madrids etc have literally dominated it. For me I believe unfortunately the Premier league teams, even with their riches, are handicapped in being in such a competitive league, and demanding schedule The Real Madrids etc are in a league where there are basically many more "easier" games, since 1995 apart from the big 2, there has been just 5 other different teams won it Laliga play the same as the premier, 38 games, but I would say that apart from 10 games in a season, the 28 others are, well not easy, but certain less intense It would seem that the English teams suffer more. Of course it can be said that the La Liga attracts better players, especially Latin,/South American players with the language, but I feel also our leagues are suffering due to their schedules and Competitiveness We are poor in these 3 game weeks, no doubt, but I can't personally write of that the schedule is skewed against us. We don't have a big squad, we have injuries and a youngish team, and these factors must come into play As Clive says, look at the table now, the richer, deeper squads, Ipswich and Southampton have moved into the play offs, and yes there will be teams that buck the trend, Millwall.... I can't see the premier or the EFL changing the schedule, where we play non stop from August to May, where in deep winter we play the majority of our games, when the cold weather contributes to muscle injuries and fatigue... I would love next year to have like some other teams 2 home games in a 3 GW, majority of the time, and see if we fare better Yes I agree when you keep telling people one thing, eventually they will adopt that attitude, and we need to stop this. But it must be difficult to change when you see that in 7 3GW since November we have been away for 2 of them 5 times

Interesting point about the Spanish leagues in Europe. Good summary. I agree it would be interesting to see what would happen if we had fewer of those two away match three game weeks. Or even an away at say Millwall as one of the three rather than Hull and Southampton in the same week. Or away-home-away rather than away-away home or home-away-away. Given our smaller squad we are already disproportionately disadvantaged compared to the bigger clubs.
