There’s a story about one of the Saints ladies being diagnosed with autism.
I’m a big skeptical on these diagnosis . She said she felt differently to everyone else at school. Dosent everyone??? When I was at school there’s was one fat kid and one really naughty child in a class of 30. Now half of them are obese and can’t sit still , full to the brim on sugar . don't exercise and can’t socialize . It really isn’t rocket science .

I have a son and a daughter, both diagnosed with autism after pretty detailed assessments by the NHS.
I have been diagnosed with autism by my wife......
Therefore feel in the unusual place of knowing a bit about a non-football subject on here.
It's a very difficult area, with a huge variety in symptoms.
I don't personally see how it can be bollocks when there is no cure.
The likes of the mad journalist Peter Hichens talk utter bollocks on this subject, and should be ignored at all costs. |  |

Autism absolutely exists. Someone in the family is autistic, and he most definitely is. He can't help it. But there is definitely an increasing number of "healthy" people who can't wait to be labelled with something, as they can't accept that being anxious and having difficulties is just "normal life". My wife works in education and so many parents can't wait to find a label for their badly parented, naughty child, but that doesn't mean that there arn't some genuine cases with special needs, because there are. It's the fakers vs the genuine, making it a minefield for the decision makers. |  |

Watching the video of the saints girl just made me think she is identifying with normal life but that isn’t special enough. Everyone thinks at that age they don’t fit in and you have ups and downs . People do like a label - by the sounds of it though you don’t like being labeled 😀 | |

There is a point though, that never before has there been so many people with this, that and the other. My wife says that there are classes in lots of schools with 80 per cent of the class with special needs. So are we saying that the vast majority of us in the UK are autistic, AdHD, can't concentrate, can't behave and most of us have conditions? Yes, some of us do but surely not nearly all of us. Having anxiety, being miserable sometimes, being restless is totally normal. [Post edited 2 Apr 20:56]

The issue I have with people in their 40’s getting a diagnosis is that it becomes a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy.
They get an ADHD diagnosis, they say “this explains why I have been like this for so long”, and then they behave in a more eccentric way than before, as if to justify the diagnosis. [Post edited 2 Apr 21:51]

I'll always remember my cousin's wedding (well the month and year they got married - August 1976) as it was the day of the Community Shield so I couldn't go! Kept getting bo11ockings for gouing out to the car (it had to be dad's car - he had a radio in it that worked) to check the score
But back to the OP, as others have said, it seems everyone wants a label or look for some way to claim compensation/benefits nowadays which unfortunately paints everyone (inc genuine cases as Pat obviously has) with the same brush |  |

She has a degree in Maths, a successful job and a circle of friends that today probably do not know about her condition. Many of these people get by in life, by what they call 'Masking'. They behave and respond how people think they should behave emotionally.
In my daughters case, she is very structured and likes routine. Breaking a routine, can be stressful.
e.g. simple things like changing date/time to visit her.
Physical contact is also challenging. e.g. if friends or family just want to hug her.
Even after many years we are still learning how to manage the relationship with our daughter.

Can relate to a lot of this.
Our 17 year-old daughter masked it a lot more than our son, to such an extent that I have been able to take her to Saints and England games, which has been really wonderful for me. | |

The words "Autistic" and Autism" are empty and have no meaning in isolation.
They have been hijacked by Z-listers, chancers and people who use them as minor pejorative insults in pubs,
What exists is an Autistic Spectrum Disorder. This, as the name suggests ,covers the huge range from Aspergers ( often called savants) all the way to those who are non-verbal, violent drugged to the eyeballs with anti-psychotic medication who have no life and no hope.
In between you find the kids who are endlessly stressed. have no interpersonal skills, no self worth and live with constant potential for self harm ...or worse !!.
I have a Granddaughter on the spectrum...I won't say where she lies on it.
Let's say one man's constant sadness is another man's boll ics.

The good thing is, there is a lot of help and advice out there now. Where as years ago, there was very little. Our problem was we didn't know enough about Autism, and just thought we had a shy girl at school, as did all her teachers.
Most people who see and interact with our daughter, wouldn't know. They become very adapt way masking. I saw the video of the Saints woman player and I could relate to everything she said. She definitely was not attention seeking and I thought she was very brave to tell her story.
We still have a loving daughter (now an adult), they just show affection and appreciation in different ways. Even Christmas is different now. we don't do presents for each other, as this just stressed her out, but we do 'secret Santa', which was good fun and light hearted. We just embrace the situation now and hopefully a few us have helped some sceptics.

A sensitive and thoughtful post.
My Granddaughter will be here tomorrow for Easter lunch.
She will sit at the end of the table with her hoodie up, wearing noise cancelling headphones the whole day.
We'll tease her gently about the Easter bunny and she will say something like "chocolate is toxic to rabbits"
