I liked the dozens of stewards forming a barrier around the pitch in the lead up to full-time. When you get a high intensity, high stakes game like that, played out in a febrile atmosphere, a pitch invasion is always on the cards.

Of the diving - Scott Twine loves a dive almost as much as he loves a moan, and his attempt to roll all the way across the pitch after a 'clash' was embarrassing for everyone. Knight, on the other hand, generally just gets up and gets on with things, so I'd be surprised/disappointed if he was play-acting, when he was down (maybe I'm naive).

There was a passage of play between I want to say minute 40 and 43 where Bristol went full Simpsons Soccer, and I don't think a player from either team moved more than 1m

I've rarely seen a spell where BOTH teams were playing for the half-time whistle.

The 12.30 KO (thanks Sky) meant we couldn't make it, so got home to catch some of it on the telly, seemed fairly obvious it was destined for 0-0.

Instead we headed round the corner later for Barnet v Barrow which finished 3-2 to the Bees and was far more entertaining!

You'd like to think our remaining four games have more riding on them (well except Swansea), and hopefully will be better quality as a result...

I don't believe fans would have preferred a 0-1 defeat or even a 1-2 just to be "entertained". I just don't. It's not a West End show. And if that's what your Saturday afternoon requires, I'm told Hamilton is enjoyable.

Losing 1-2 to a 97th minute winner by Bristol City in 2021 was not more enjoyable. It really wasn't!

Many football matches are boring. Always have been. Always will be. Want guaranteed thrills and spills, lots of goals? Try ice hockey.

No one is saying that. If you think they are you’ve misunderstood.

At that precise point of nothingness, City actually attempting to score and doing so would have turned it back into a football game that I (and every other Rangers fan) would have wanted us to win.

I came to watch a football match I wanted QPR to win, not 22 blokes going through the motions to pass the time, stop a game, and then amble off into their weekend after a 0-0. You get 0-0s, of course. But usually one or both teams want to win and show some intent. It was just bizarre on Sat.

That 2-1 loss at home under Warburton several years back was excruciatingly frustrating, because we absolutely battered them. But it was a very exciting Championship game of football, with intensity and quality. We played so well that day. Battered them. It was annoying as hell, but it’s a great example of why we watch, follow and care about football and our team.

Saturday was not.

I'm all for a bot of a shithousery and dark arts - anything to avoid the Disney FC debacle. But, yeah what's the point when it's a dead rubber. Blame it on Roy's mantra of getting his team's organised and hoping any attacking play happens by magic

Sometimes you lose a game you dominate, sometimes you fluke a win, sometimes it's a barnstormer, sometimes it's a tense, exciting draw, often it's a drab stalemate. So be it!

I enjoy 0-0s and clean sheets however they come, be they away at Sheffield United or at home to Bristol City more than conceding and losing.

But maybe what you describe would have tipped me over the edge as I missed this pre-HT sequence of play cos I was downstairs attempting to buy four pints and drink them with my crew before the start of the second half. A near impossible task, even when getting to the bar bang on opening at 35 minutes into the game.

This for me is a far bigger ballache and never-ending scandal at Loftus Road than anything on the pitch. We must each fight our personal demons.

Like most games in this country at the moment, dull as dishwater.

Obviously levels above in terms of quality, but you watch the best European teams and they’re not spending 90 seconds setting up corners or taking throw in. Just play.

English football obsession with fine margins, high XG chances, and the rest needs putting in the bin. I blame Brentford for getting all data about it in the first place.

Not harsh at all. He’s a good defender, and has been a good signing, but is a weak link on the ball and going forward. It’s there for all to see and has been clear all season.

Any club wishing to progress into the top 6, and wishing to retain possession better, which is us on both counts as I understand it, needs to be looking at more quality at right back. Mbengue would then fight it out, as opposed to being auto first choice.

He’s a championship defender. What you expecting? Roberto Carlos? We need our defenders to defend first, pace is great second. He does at least get up and down the pitch. I do not think it takes too much to ask for us to coach him to cross better. I’d say he’s pretty vital to us defensively.

Yeh that was the one, minutes 40-44. Put together about 30 passes, spent four minutes doing it, progressed the ball about three feet. Mind blowing.

Well Kone and Kolli dropped ridiculously deep for no apparent reason in that time, and we just let Bristol have the ball as if to say "find a way through". Which funnily enough wasn't too difficult for them and Walsh had to make two smart saves.

Weirdly, we had quite an enjoyable time at the game on Saturday. Obviously, what was served up on the pitch was dire, but me and my youngest had quite a laugh just laughing at how shite it was. Maybe it's the carefree nature of being safe from relegation.

Anyway, great report - loved the intro; very creative and very funny

Agreed mate. A bit worrying that Mbengues crossing is becoming laughable and comedic now among myself and my neighbours. It was funny at the start but he’s done that joke far too often now.

Nobody said they were expecting Roberto Carlos, least of all me. So no need to reframe it to suit your own point because the original point I made still stands.

I repeat - if the club have ambitions of top 6, then a full back who is comfortable on the ball, and good going forward is a real requirement not a nice to have.

Technical ability is the hardest to coach, you typically either have it or you don’t. It’s why our DCMs (Field, Hayden, Varane) can’t play back to goal, and receive the ball in tight spaces, spin, and play forward. Despite being in the game years and training every day. Great defensively, but technically they are all weak, and it holds us back as a team.

Sinclair Armstrong is another case in point. Most said he could develop technically, but reality is he can not. Not to the level needed anyway. You might be able to go from a 3-4 out of 10 technically to a 5-6. But it isn’t enough as the bar is so low to begin with.

As for Mbengue, he undoubtedly has good characteristics, and has been a good signing - no debate there. But we will highly likely need a lot more from the full back position if we are to progress. Same goes for LB. Need more quality on both sides.

To be fair to City, a couple of their 60-pass marathons ended with a player getting the ball completely alone in our area. Fortunately they were as surprised by it as anyone.

To be fair to Mbengue, from my seat in the SBS, he did seem genuinely hurt by an elbow to the eye, he was blinking and rubbing it for most of the rest of the game and he was clearly incensed. Though Edwards had a very good game, he stepped away from the situation and left it to Morgan to try talking Mbengue out of a red card, which isn’t what Jimmy would have done.

I thought that too from thee Paddocks. He was furious not only from inaction from the officials but the other player trying to yank him up when he was genuinely hurt. Insult to injury that he actually got booked as well.

My point albeit exaggerated was that Mbengue is a good defender, great engine and great pace. If you want to replace him with a better full back, you will expect to have a worse defender, less pace I assume? Or are you saying we want one who has all those attributes? I think that is unrealistic for us.

We did not need to have full backs with great technical ability to get promoted under Warnock and I don’t think we need them now. We have 3 key areas to address this summer, and I think most on here and at games are in agreement what they are. To start looking at replacing a decent right back seems a bit mad to me. I want my defenders to be good defenders first. Mbengue’s pace gets us out of a lot of issues defensively. Mbengue has also marked out 2 of the best wingers in this league. He wasn’t that bad against Summerville. If we try to get a full back who is better going forward, I think we will lose the defensive solidity that Mbengue brings. Maybe you can’t teach “technical” ability but you can definitely get him to cross better.

Well yes if you want full backs who can defend with pace and also cross accurately, then they're going to cost you a lot of money.

I think Mbengue has had a solid first season and as mentioned his crossing can be worked on - at least I'm led to believe that's the purpose of training and coaching?

Oh and just to add isn't Mbengue really a CB by trade? So if he's been played out of position all season, then he has put in a decent shift.

"We did not need to have full backs with great technical ability to get promoted under Warnock"

We had Kyle Walker on loan for 20 games, one of the best full backs I've ever seen for us even in that short spell.

Full backs are so important. We can aspire to have better than every season playing converted CBs at RB. Watch how it will improve our right-sided attacker too.

Fans of Carthaginian violence will love Flaubert’s novel Salammbô, described by Amazon as an “epic story of lust, cruelty and sensuality” set in the aftermath of Carthage’s defeat in the First Punic War. Top tip - however bad it gets, never forget to pay your mercenaries.

Quite, full backs are so important.

And they are especially important to the stated club game model and the “technical qualities” that Nourry regularly alludes to.

A game model that we have largely been unable to execute in fact (we haven’t won a game with more possession for an eternity). Because key enablers to that model are centre mids and full backs who are technically sound and comfortable on the ball. Those 4 positions - both CMs and both full backs - are absolutely key.

So even if JamesB1979 doesn’t think this is a necessity to the stated club model, I would wager the club most certainly do, and will likely keep iterating and shaping the squad accordingly to keep moving forward and strengthening.

As said in the report, while Mbengue is getting a lot of the attention, and most people are happy with RND on the other side, our left back also has zero goals and zero assists this year. Even the often maligned Paal used to contribute sort of 2(4) figures to that each year.
