| A genre classic - Report on 12:03 - Apr 14 with 1891 views | BrianMcCarthy | Hard not to like Mbengue, of course, and it's a great debate. Can I also just add that in the last two seasons we have regularly played with centre-backs in both full-back positions in the same game as well as two very deep central midfielders. To my mind we don't own one full-back good enough for this division. | |

| A genre classic - Report on 11:19 - Apr 14 by Northernr | As said in the report, while Mbengue is getting a lot of the attention, and most people are happy with RND on the other side, our left back also has zero goals and zero assists this year. Even the often maligned Paal used to contribute sort of 2(4) figures to that each year. |
Both full back positions have been a problem position for years now. As has centre midfield. Needs resolving this summer if we want to progress.

Is it just me who thinks this, or has the art of central midfield play disappeared out of foootball generally? I can't think of anyone off the top of my head who "owns" the central area in the way that for example a Terry Venables or -going up a few levels -Pirlo used to do. Everyone just seems to be obsessed with getting it out to the wings as soon as possible for the wingers (all inverted, because of course) to shoot from the edge of the 18 yard box. Looks great when it comes off, but massively irritating when it often doesn't.

Middlesbrough's was the best I've seen at this level for ages when we played them, and they've basically lost every game since.

Yes they were. But then they lost Hayden Hackney and have 3 points from 5 games. That’s why I’m saying that we have done remarkably well without Madsen, Burrell and Chair. Teams can deal with injuries but not key ones like that. | | | | Login to get fewer ads

Ah didn't realise Hayden was Knackneyed. Explains a lot. Yes kudos to the manager for finding a way (and the players).

Personally I think he could be with a bit of support in front of him and in a generally good team. My question is: is RB more of a priority than other positions given our obvious financial constraints. We can’t keep bashing the club for spending too much and then say well we need top of the range players in five or six positions. So my view is we have to focus on the essential positions, which for me are GK, CM and LB. Our issue has been less about not scoring enough and more about letting too many in. GK has been a part of that. Injuries have also been part of it, having the occasional makeshift defender out of position. Also having to flog Madsen for so much of the season. He’s been fantastic but even the best players run out of steam. Having someone else who could carry the ball forward and ideally hold onto it would be amazing. RND has been a good choice for us at LB but if we have some spare cash we could probably get someone who could get some assists and chip in with the odd goal.

How do you sign a GK when Walsh and Cooper are both contracted and both have expectations to be number 1? Not a smart arse question - just don't understand what the work around is. The club have backed themselves in a corner.

Well you're losing Nardi's presumably first team keeper salary from the wage bill, and whatever we're paying Hamer. I could also see Cooper leaving, like you I'm not sure I see the point in keeping both around (particularly if you were to sign somebody else). It depends what our ambition is for next season. Being really blunt and harsh about it I just don't think any of our keepers are that good.
| A genre classic - Report on 16:27 - Apr 14 with 1398 views | Third_Division_South | Yep, definitely a goalkeeper and LB. I’m assuming Cook and Morrison will both be off but think we have enough to cover this. In an ideal world I’d like another Odubajo type who could cover both FBs sides. If Varane and Field go we will need a defensive midfielder. I’m also with most in here thinking we need a progressive box to box midfielder, I liked the look of Tottenhams Devine who played against us v Preston. With a few sales and high earners leaving most of this should be achievable. I’d like to think that if most on here can see our weaknesses the recruitment team should be on top of this. Surely? I agree with all that. I just don't see it being the club's 'game model' next season. Sometimes I wonder if we're hearing what they keep telling fans, or maybe I'm mishearing it. But binning your elected development keeper from the 1st team after 20-odd games just seems miles from what they tell us their goal is: to develop players. If they start saying the aim is to be top eight next season, well, then they have to do some surgery, starting with the keeper. Then LB, CM and a specialist RB to compete with Mbengue, perhaps improve him. | | | |

I don't disagree, like I say it depends what the aim is. When we talk about developing players, at what point do you decide a player isn't going to develop any more and just accept that's their level and replace them? I agree this summer is probably too soon to reach that conclusion with Cooper and Walsh, but it's not far off. You can't just keep shipping goals like we have with a sub standard goalkeeper while saying "well we're a development club".

Previous regime did textbook goalkeeping developing with Dieng and, despite his faults, Lumley, who has had a career at a good level thanks to QPR. Cooper's developing makes sense. Walsh's makes no sense. I predict they'll start with Walsh and then, events, dear boy, events. They can start with him as number one - agree they may sell Cooper - but if he's throwing them in and the crowd is on his back online and at matches, then they'll be replacing him in January. This feels likely to me. Hope he does well though.

Neil Warnock would've loved that - not! I'm sure he once said he didn't want any team of his to take 20 passes to get into the opposition's half. I'm with him.

Top tip - however bad it gets, never forget to pay your mercenaries. |
Interesting. While we're on this subject, I used to use a quote attributed to Hannibal as my motto at work, "I shall either find a way or make one". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ In case you're wondering, I've never owned any elephants, but if I had, I would've tried clothing them in blue and white hoops and taking them over the Chilterns to storm Luton. Or something. Damn, lost my pills again .
