err not many want to see him around Southampton let alone Middlesbrough. He has completely fooked it even if it's a crappy rule, you still don't do it and he knew what he was doing. Also, pressuring his team (some youngsters) into doing things he knew were illegal too.

Agreed.
I was on the defensive when this all erupted, but now I've seen all the truth exposed then I just cannot forgive Tonda or any of the others involved.
Tonda has gone from being this best thing that has happened in recent years to being the idiot that destroyed the credibility of our club.
It's likely that week suffer more financial loss & embarrassment very soon, when our Sponsors withdraw their sponsorship.
In hindsight we'd have been better off keeping Will Still despite us all disliking him we would not be in this mess.

Can't agree with your last sentence I'm afraid
If we'd have kept Will Still we'd have been relegated imo
I was at the Preston game, the last before he was sacked, and it was clear to me that the players had lost faith in his methods and weren't playing for him, we were abysmal

It appears we had/have a culture where the spying was allowed and possibly encouraged.I read on another forum that Saints don't have a compliance officer at the club, someone who's job is to make sure no rules are being broken. So there was no-one at the club who was prepared to stop what was going on or realise the trouble we could get in by persisting with the practice

Plenty on the Echo comments pages. Maybe they are all Christians because their capacity for forgiveness is beyond my comprehension.

Yes, well I will add my "Christian" vote to that, if he shows contrition and repentance then I would give this very young man - and lets not forget how young he is - a second chance.

He could be incredibly motivated to make amends. I doubt he will be given the chance though, as in these days of extreme reactions, the supercilious, holier than thou authorities, who we all know are the real cheats will want to scapegoat him and chuck him out with the rubbish to make an example of him.

We have all messed up at times San Marco - Let him who is without sin cast the first stone....

I wholly disapprove of what you say and will defend to the death your right to say it.

Better to be in Div 1 with our Credibility intact, than playing in Championship with absolutely no Credibility & being regarded as a bunch of cheaters.
We are an embarrassment & the most hated club in the UK.

Great sentiments Jelly but he’s not shown much contrition so far.

I think we should judge giving him a second chance based on what he says next.

As I said elsewhere, press conference and hair shirt would be needed first

And really if he was that contrite he would feel obliged to offer his own resignation

I want him to stay (but assume he’ll be banned by the FA anyway).
Reasons:
- He’s a good manager, proven winner, adaptable.
- We’re not in a position to attract anyone decent at the moment and we’ll be back to Sports Republic picks, could be another Jones, Still, Juric.
- He isn’t as likely to move as other clubs won’t want the bad publicity. Maybe he’ll be more loyal to us in the future if we stick with him now.
- The media and general public seem to have us as public enemy number one at the moment anyway, so we should embrace it and siege mentality time.
- I am fed up of being plucky losers, he wants to win.

Well said.

If Tonda manages to miraculously escape a ban and Dragan mulls it over, I think this is all down to the players then. Can the majority play under him after all this? Probably not and therefore it will be a new team regardless, so you are better off getting a new manager, there are others out there by the way not only Eckhart.

We know that. F*ck knows we've been through enough managers over the past few years.

This bloke is different. He's meticulous.. thorough... obsessed. He wants to know every tiny little detail about who he's playing next. Spying beforehand on the opposition and getting found out has exploded in his face & now he is paying the price.

BUT...I still want to see him here next season. I don't want us to become the next Stoke. I love his football. I love his in-game management. I love the fact he's a winner and in true German style, he is ruthless.

Sadly, I am 95% certain the FA will take the opposite view however & ban the fella for a year - if not eighteen months - and with it will go our best manager in recent years. I'd rather we paid a £1M fine and kept Eckert than banish him to the tainted football manager wilderness.

'Vorsprung Durch Technik' indeed.

From another forum:

"The players can't really be that angry with him in truth. Not if they engage their brains. Before he came in they were staring at relegation... So they can't really blame him for fluffing up a promotion chance they wouldn't have had without him 🤷 . In summary, they were shit without him, incredible with him, and then he shit the bed and we went full circle... They make a fitting group I'd say."

Haha has a point

We all know that Tonda is an oasis of natural talent and intellect in our managerial desert. The tragedy is that the exceptional talent and intellect he has, also lacked honour and integrity in equal measure - a battle that humans through history, especially Saints fans at the moment, struggle to resolve.

I was up for apologies, rehabilitation and get on and get us up next season, so keeping Tonda was a good idea, until I found out he'd bullied those young analysts into the spying. Ironic as we'd been promoting mental health week recently.

It turns out Tonda isn't a very nice bloke, but he is a damn good coach.

The trial by media means we are public enemy nO.1,2 and 3 at the moment though. The quickest way to restore our rep is to get rid of everyone who was involved inthe cheating. The FA might do some of the job for us. Watch this space.

Agree. Was shocked that he bullied interns. Ok to be ruthless- in fact it is a requirement to succeed as football manager. Not Ok to bully young folks.

All of football don't get found out, lie, then admit it later. We bent over to the EFL and they right royaly shafted us. Any operations that would have been happening at other clubs will just get more covert and more competant. Certainly won't involve kids using I phones in plain site 200 yards from the pitch.

YES- We should keep Tonda - if he wishes to stay. He is a great Manager. He made a really really stupid mistake. He is Young and Talented. He clearly should apologise and he has work to do to rebuild. He will also get a heavy sanction from the FA. Yet we should all all we can to help him through this. The owners made a good appointment. How many of us have screwed up. How many Managers have done things they regret.

For all the good Eckert has done for the club, his actions have more than undone that. I don’t think the decision will be in the club’s hands anyway, but given the rules he has broken, with what was always going to be massive consequences whether sporting or financial, gross misconduct would seem to be a formality, and the sooner the better to begin the process of replacing him. I am gutted that he has done this, as his managerial capabilities are exceptional.

Lets be blunt here, when we played Boro in both games we were content to sing Tonda Eckert's name and take the p*** out of Boro fans with binoculars.

If we had been simply fined and then played in the game tomorrow, everyone would be singing "Tonda Eckert he spy's where we wants"

Such is the fickleness of football supporters

I agree 100% with this but would only add that this a moment when the players should have their say. If they’re as angry with him as Scienza’s post suggests then it’s a non-starter. If, on the other hand, the core of the team want to ‘go again’ then he needs a big, very public written warning from the club about bullying junior staff then a statement from Dragan that we should get behind him. I suspect it’ll be academic though ‘cos of an FA ban. Has Danny Rohl fallen out with the Rangers board yet? 😏

I also agree, and it says a lot about the support this club has that so many turn on "one of their own" at the drop of a hat rather than concentrate on the ownership of Middlesbrough who outwitted the Southampton board and turned a molehill into a media mountain. As Pep Guardiola said (in defence of Eckert) on the continent all clubs do it, it's just accepted as inevitable and to be honest uncontrollable, and he went on to point out that very little is actually gained anyway. How many results ever been altered by spying on a training session compared to turning the head of a star player with an illegal approach from a rogue agent? He might also have pointed out that smart clubs here will still do it, but use third parties, drones or even bribes to get some tiny nugget of info. I agree that ultimately the players as well as the EFL will decide his fate, but the speed at which fans turned on him will make him glad to leave.
